1.638398 1927' T. F. COONEY FRUIT CURING DEVICE Filed April .16. 19326 INVENTOR. f Jim Jnmy 'IATTORNEK Patented Aug. 9, 1927.
UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TEQMAB 1'. COONEY OF NEW HAVEN; CONNECTICUT.
Faun-coarse nnvroii Application filed April 16, 1928. Serial 1T0. 108,428.
wherein the same numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views-- Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the device- I Figure 2 is a elevation looking in the direction of arrow a, Figure 1- Figure3 is a sectional view of the tubular cutter showing the normal position of the combined core extractor and core compressor,
also broken view of one of the arms of the handle Figure 4 is a similar view of the tubular cutter and handle showing the extractor forced against the opposite inner wall of the tubular cutter- Figure 5 is'an end view of the device looking in the direction of arrow 1;, Figure 1 Figure 6 is a detail view of the extractor and its supporting rod, and
Figure 7 is a detail view of the core extractor and core compressor.
The tubular cutter 1 has its lower end beveled to form the cutting edge 2. The handle is formed of a single piece of metal compris ing the head portion 3 and the spaced sides or arms 4, 5, embracing the cutter and are secured thereto by the rod 6 passing through the cutter 1. therethrough similar to the slot 7 in the arm 4, Figures 2, 3, and 4:, for the free admission of the rod 8 on which are mounted the outer finger supports 9.' The scoop shaped core extractor and compressor 10 has the bottom 11 and housing 12 by means of which it is ,journaled on the rod 6. The extractor actuating lever 13 is pivotally supported-to the rod R of the-handle and the pin 14 of the stzuulard 15 of the extractor.
Each arm has an elongated slot I In operating the device, the lever 13 is first actuated by forcing the finger supports 9 downward to carry the extractor 10 over against the inner wall of the tubular cutter as shown in Figure 3. The cutter 1 is then forced down into the center of a halved fruit to envelop and enclose the core, when an upward pull against the finger supports 9 will carry the extractor over from its normal position, Figure-3, to the opposite inner wall of the cutter, carrying the core with it.
During the withdrawal of the cutter 1 from the fruit, the upward pull on the knobs 9.will continue to be exerted and thus thoroughly squeeze the core and discharge the juice therefrom back into the fruit. The
pressure on the supports 9 is'then reversed to carry the extractor to its normal position when the exhausted core will readily fall out of the tubular cutter.
Various minor changes in the general construction of the combined core extractor and core compressor could be effected without interfering with its main'and principal function of detaching and compressing the core. If desired, the perforations 16, Figure 7, could be formed in the side of the extractor, and also in bottom 11 as well to facilitate the dischar e of the juice. could also be made 'in the mechanism for Liinor changes Figure 4, detaching and actuating the extractor without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. A coring device of the character described, comprising a tubular cutter, a handle connected therewith, and a combined core.
extractor and core compressor within the tubular cutter and operatively connected with the handle. i
2. A coring device of the character described, comprising a tubular cutter', -a handle.
connected therewith, a combined core extractor and core compressor pivotally supported within the tubular cutter, means operatively' connected with the extractor for oscillating the extractor within the tubular cutter.
3. A coring device of the character described, comprising a tubular cutter, a handle bined core extractor and core compressorpivotally supported within the tubular cutter, and. movable finger supports operatively 10 connected W1th the extractor to actuate said extractor to sever and compress a fruit core.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
THOMAS F. GOONEY.
