-Theprcsent inventionyrelates to improvements in apparatusv or` ,devices forrmaking compact-s, particularly face vpowder com l., u f n pacte as they are used inladies vanitycases or the like. .and it 1s the Lprmcipalobgectof my invention to'providesuch an'apparatus allowing theready exchange of the dies used for vthe compression of vthe powderin order to make compactsof round, half-moon or any other desired configuration.
Another object of 'the inventionis the pro- Y l vision of apparatusy for making compacts of simple and therefor yinexpensiveconstruction, yet durable. and eflicient in operation, and one which can be operated by persons not speciallylslilled in, this art.
A further object of they invention is the "ff'f provision ofan apparatusy of this type including a die carryi'nghandle and suitable guides for the i same.v
-ir--stillfurther -objec't'ofj-my invention is theprov1s1on of a? novel methodor process for making compa-'cts with my yimproved 4aPIiHatus.1
These and other :objects vand advantages ofmy invention will become more full apparent as the description thereof proceeds,
' and will then be specifically defined inl the appended claims. Y
In the accompanvmg` drawingaforming al material part of this disclosurez' Fig. 1 isa side elevation of a compact press constructed according to myinvention, in sectionon line 1-1 of Figure 2.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof seenf in the direction of arrows 2-2 of Figure 1.

Fig. 4 is a section on line f1-Of Figure 2.
F ig. 5 1s an elevation of one form of comvpact made with my apparatus and accordmeans of the plunger operating.' lever system 14 by means of the operating lever or handle 15 in the usual well known manner.V
A. bar or rod 16 is pivotally secured at one end, as at 17, between the upper forked ends of a peg 18turnably set withv its lower endv iutoa. plate ion table having two longiiiv.

The outer end of bar is formed l convenient handle 27, while-arguide 28 vhas a recess 29 formed in theupper edge of its' 'y f rear end'for the reception of -bar lduringthe pressing operatiomyand a footl 30fset in thetable, At its front end the guide `E28-'isi The compacts are formedgon2 ametalzbase 'slant-ingetowards thetable, -a's indicatedy :at Y

The compact can have eitherfthe form illustrated in Figure 5'at 34, or that shown in Figure Gat 35, andthe die26is `selected to suit the particular form and is then carried down against anvil i 36 and pressed down to compress the compactpow-fVV Y der to a solid cake.
It will be clear that the disclosure A:ill'ustratesas an example thepreferred form" of f i myapparatus only, and that suchl changes as come within the .scope` of the appended-4 claims may be made in the construction ofy the minor details thereof and in their combination withoutl departure from the spirit i of my invention.
According to my novel'methodofmakingij i compacta the plate or base 32 is coated with mucilage or theflike adhesive substance Iand I' the powder isr picked'up from 'a supply in` the exact nant-ity lneeded by avspecial' tool made for t ispurpose, whereupon the compact and powder are brought under the action of the die which presses the compact in the form desired with the powderforming a whole with the Vbase in a perfect]j compact and solid form. Having thus described I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
my invention,' what the compact to'be pressed', andfthefdielhav y is under a die for '1 1.7PowderV compact press comprising a bar, a seat formed with said bar for seating a compact-'to bepressed, means tor carrying *the compactonsaid seat undera diepress,
means for allowing a manipulation of Vsaid' meansV for adjustably securing said bar.
v2. Powder compact press comprisingV a rod, a circular member formed with said rod intermediatethe ends thereof, a seat vformedl with said member` for a compact, a means foriturnably and adjustablyV mount- Y ing. one end of said rod, a guide havingy a recess near the rear end thereof and a fronty f adapted to be guided under the die and held in place thereunder, and an anvil to provide tus adapted to receive and-@hold exchange-k therequired resistance during the Vpressing operation.
'4; The
combination oi a Vpresser appara- Y 'ablef compact dies,'with `atable7'an'anvil on Y said table Vunder and in line with the presser dieyaV movable support for thev compact to be pressed, Van anvil on said table for preparing the compact, and a means for adjust- Y ing the movable supportjfor the compact.
'having the' form of the compact desired with 5. The combination of a vpresser appara-.r` Y
tus adapted tov receive and hold exchangeably compact dies, with a table, a plate on said ltable havingparallel longitudinalslots, r
pins on said table traveling in said slots, a turnable foot having a forked upper end mountedon said plate', a. rod movably held between'the lforks of said turnable ii'oot for swinging motion, a'circularmen'iber on'said rod adapted to be swung wit-h the compact thereon underneath the die, and a means for guiding the said member under the dies and hold iti-n position thereunder. 6. A method ot making compacts or" face. powderr consisting in coating a basewith an adhesive,y placing aquant-i'tyV of` powder' or aV predetermined measure on said adhesive to adhere as a solid cake to said base'.
- 7 A method of making face powdercompacts consisting in coating a..meta1 -rbase mucilage7 placing a predetermined quantity ofpowder taken from arsupply by a special A' tool upon the coat on said base,V carrying said baseL and powder under a die,V holding.v said vbase and powder underneath ther 'sameY and pressing said powder ontol said baseto forml with the same a solid cake.
