This invention relates to an improvement in Wheels and particularly to an improvement in Wheels of the disk type.
One object of this invention is to provide a disk Wheel having` a single convex concave tapered disk.
Another object is to provide clutch acting driving means which also support the disk at the hub and relieve the assembling pins from all driving strain.
A. further objectof the invention is to pro vide in a disk Wheel a rim of varying thick ness, the flange portions being the thickest and the base the thinnest.
Another object of the invention is to provide a disk Wheel with a rim having an annular groove against which a portion of the Wheel disk is positioned.
Other objects Will appear from a consideration of the specification and of the drawings which form a part thereof .and in which l Figure 1 is a section taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2 disclosing one embodiment of this invention;

Referring to the drawings and particularly to the embodiment shown inFigs. 1 and 2, the reference numeral 10 designates the hub member which is mounted on an axle 11. On the hub member is provided an annular flange 12 having an annular shoulder 13 and a conical face 111-. i The flange 12 also has a series of `pockets 15 thru the bottom of which are provided openings 16. vIn 5" each of the openings 16 is mounted a bolt 1 7 having a shoulder 18 intermediate its length. The bolt is held in place on the flange by a nut 19 which firmly clamps the flange against the shoulder. i
The Wheel disk 2O has a central opening 21 of a diameter greater than that 0f the annular shoulder 13. Around the opening 21 are provided apertures 22 thru which the bolts 17 extend when the disk and hub are assembled. The apertures 22 at the face of the disks are recessed as at 23 for a purpose to be described below.
Bigidly secured to the back of the disk 2O a ring` 2-1.the inner face 25 of which is conical so that when the disk and hub are assembled the face 25 will bear against the face 111 of the flange. It will thus be noted that the full Weight of the Wheel is carried thru these cooperating faces Which form clutch surfaces locking the disk in place on the hub and in addition to carrying the Weight act to transmit the power between the disk and the hub. At the same timeV all driving and shearing strain on the bolts 17 is eliminated together with the vertical `and side stresses.
The hub portion of the disk lies in a plane 2G infront of and parallel to the center longitudinal plane 27 of the Wheel. At an equal distance behind the plane 27 is a plane 28 which is parallel to the plane 26. These tivo planes 2G and 28, between Which the disk is located, thus limit its contour. The portion 29 of the disk Which bears against the flange 12 is thickest and, as pointed out above, lies in the plane 26. The disk is curved convexly from the plane 26 to the center plane 27, and then concavely touchingl the plane 28 at its deepest point 30 and returning to the center plane 27 again. The disk is noiv curved convexly touching the plano 2G at 31 and iinally terminates in a tl formed by a peripheral fiange 32 concentric with the axis of the Wheel and extending to the plane 28. That portion of the disk which acts as a felly and to which the rim is secured provides an annular pocket 3B at the back of the disk.
It Will be noted that the disk crosses the center plane 27 of the Wheel three times, i. e., at 34, 35 and 36, thus giving resiliency and strength to the light disk. By reason of lthis construction the disks acts to absorb Wheel shocks and crystallization of the metal is prevented. Also as shown particularly in Fig. l the disk tapers 'from the hub portion 29 to the peripheral flange 32 Where it engages the riin. The rim 37, as shown in F l, has an annularl groove 38 against Which the juncture of the disk and flange bears in order to properly position the disk with rela-tion to the rini. lhis rim is preterably are-welded to the flange but any suitable iastening` means may he employed. Seated in the gi-ocre 38 is the rim ring 39.
The disk .2O clamped onto the flange l2 and the shoulders itl by caps` et() threaded onto the bolts 17. llhe inner ends ot these caps hear against 'the recess 23 around the apertures andnot against the tace oil the disk. Hence when the cap is tightened there is nodanger of cracking the enamel on the tace* of the disk. lilasteneiil. inside the cap et() by a rivet el or suitable means, is a loc( -`-asher 42; its shown in 7 this Washer is slotted to provide spring' tongues @t3 which are normally' heut out oit' lthe plane of the Washer, so that when the cap is tightened these tongues will bear against the end of the bolt 17 and prevent loosening` ot the cap.
The embodiment shown in Fig. 3 and Fin'. it discloses a. Wheel similar in many respects to 'the embodiment shown in Figs. and f3 and in so tar as it is similar the saine reference characters have been used.` la

At the outer edge of the adapter is provided a conical seat 59 which is engaged by the ring` of the disk to support the disk out of contact With the shoulder 58 and transmit the driving forces.
The rim 60 is tapered transversely, the tia-nues 6l being thicker than the base (32. By reducing the thickness ot the base the weight ot the riin is cut down and inasmuch as the lange 32 ot the disk is firmly secured to that portion oit the rim the strength ot the Wheel is not sacrili'c d by reducing the thickness of the base 62. In the rim (50 is provided an annular groove G3 against which the point of juncture of the disk andthe flange bears.

7. In a disk Wheel, a hub, an adapter carried by and rigidly secured to said hub, said adapter having an annular shouldei' and a conical face, a disk having a central opening of a diameter larger than that of 'the shoulder and a ring on said disk having a conical inner face engaging the face of said adapter when the Wheel is assembled.
8. In a disk Wheel, a hub7 an adapter carried by and rigidly secured to said hub, said adapter having an annular shoulder and. a conicalface, a disk having a central opening of a diameter larger than that of the shoulder, a ring on said disk having a conical inner face, engaging the face of said adapter When the Wheel is assembled, and means for securing said adapter to said hub and said disk to said adapter.
9. In a disk Wheel, a hub, an adapter carried by and rigidly secured to said hub, said adapter having an annular shoulder and a conical face, a disk having a central opening of a diameter larger than that of the shoulder, a ring on said disk having a conical inner face engaging.;` the face of said adapter when the Wheel is assembled, means for securing said adapter to said hub, and means independent of said adapter securing means for securing said disk to said adapter.
