' IMPROVEMENT IN ROAD-SCRAPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,842, dated June 1, 1875; application filed January 15,1875.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMMETT A. BEACH, of Battle Oreek,,in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented an Improved Road-Scraper, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to provide a road-scraper by which a larger amount of earth may be handled, and with less labor than those heretofore used.
The invention consists in the peculiar shaped scraper having a platform for the driver to stand upon, projecting to the rear, with a caster-wheel under it to support it. A wheel is pivoted on each end of the scraper, near the front lower corner, in such a manner as to prevent the scraper from digging too deep in scraping, and when dumping to support the edge of the scraping-face about three inches above the surface of the dump, and thus spread the earth on it to that depth.
Figure l is a perspective view of the scraper as it appears when scraping. Fig. 2 is a partial side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the scraper turned up to dump. Fig. 4 is a partial side elevation of the same.
In the drawing, A represents the body of the scraper, made of heavy sheet metal, its cross-section being a sector of a spiral convolution with plate-iron heads or ends riveted in each end by overlapping bevel-flanges a, and riveting through the laps. The lower edge of the scraper is faced with a steel cutting-edge,
A. The bale B is pivoted in the ends of the scraper above its axis. From the rear side of the scraper two bars, 0 G, riveted thereto, project horizontally back, and support a platform, D, for the driver to stand upon. Under this platform there is a caster-wheel, E, which supports it. F F are two wheels, one of which is journaled on a stud projecting from the ends of the scraper near the lower front corner thereof at such a position that when the scraper is down to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 they will gage the depth of cut taken by the scraper, which, when filled, will slide over the ground until the dump is reached, when the driver steps 01f, and catching the ends of the bars 0, he throws them up to dump the scraper, which is pulled over by the bale until the flanges a a strike it. The scraper is now supported by the Wheels F about three inches above ground, over which the load is distributed to a uniform depth. The scraper is left in this position while being drawn back to the grading-place.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The scraper A, of the form shown, provided with the bale B, bars 0 G, platform D, casterwheel E, and wheels F F, substantially as described.
