MEANS on SECURING CASES 'i o CARRYINQIBOARDS.
application fiied'aanuar 4, 1921'. Serial 1%.158935.
This invention relates to securing devices and more particularly to a device {for securinga caseQ's-uch as a trunk, suit case, or the like on a carrying board, as the running board of an automobile. 5
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple, compact, light neat appearing,' and inexpensive securing device of the character stated. i I j Another object is to provide device for securing a case, such as atrunk, suit case, or the like on a carrying board, which device may be mounted within the case and secured thereto as a part thereof.
Another object is to provide a device of the above character that may be compactly and neatly folded up within the case when 1 not in use so as to be out of sight.
A further object is to provide a device of the character stated by means of which a trunk, suitcase or the like may besecured on'a carrying, board so as not to project be yond the outer edge of said board.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detail description and the appended claims.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the invention in a form we at present deem preferable. 1
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a case equipped with our securing device showing the case secured by said device on the running board of an automobile, the rear "portion'of which is illustrated by dot and dash' line's. Fig. 2 is a. fragmentary vertical section of the lower portion of the casetaken on a plane indicated by line 22, Fig. ,1. i
' Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view'of a case;
equipped with our securing device 'with'the device folded up in bottom compartment of the case and the cover in placeto c'on-' ceal the securing device. I
' Fig. i is a view analogous to Fig. 3 except that" the cover is'removedto illustrate the securing device which is shown folded up" in the bottom compartment of-the case} v Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the-bottom of the case shown in Fig. 2 taken on a plane indicated by line 5-5 Figure 2, but show- 7 ing our securing device folded up within the lower compartment of the trunk. Portions are broken away to contract the Vl6W.'
- movement by the corner members a.
Fig. 6 is .a fragmental vertical section taken on line 66, Fi 2 showingthe means for securing one end ofthe cover board in place.- i i In the drawing l'designates a case or the like such as a trunk constructed with a de tachable bottom orv cover plate 2 and a false bot-tom 3 spaced above 'saiddetachable bottom and forming a compartment-4 therebetween and along onegside of said caseflA lid 5 of any suitable design provides means of access to'the insideof the case. The detachable bottom .2 rests. against the lower edges 6 ofthe' front and rear Walls of thecase with-one end edge 7 of said bottom.
" resting against the inner edge 8 of a trans-v of the case, and with theother outer beveled end edge 10: of said bottom restingunder the undercut beveled inner edge 11 of' a transverse bottom strip 12 at theothenside of the. case and beingsecured against lateral The detachable bottom 2 isheld in closed POSl': tion by any'suitable latch means 1-3, which shown comprises a spring latch14 mount:
ed on the inside of said bottomand an aper-.. tured angle member 15 secured to the lower sidefof the false bottom 3 and engaged by saidlatch there being ahandle. 16 on the.
rear end of said latch extending downward, 1y into an opening 17 insaid bottom in such position that. one may operate the handle" through said opening to disengage the latch from said ang eme'mb r. Y v Metal plates 18 are secured to the inside; of the front and rear walls of the-trunk and two plates secured to the, front wall" and two.
secured to :the rear wall near the side-walls of the trunk. A pair of rods19 are secured.
at their ends to plate's18, each rod being secured at one end to one ofthe plates on the front wall and at its other end to acompanion plate on the rea'r'wall .ofithe trunk A pair of clamps 20 are respectively pivotally and slidably mounted by hinges 21 on the rods 19 each of which clampscomprise; a U-shapeol member 22 and a clamp screw 23, the hinges 21' of each clampbeing secured to one of the armsofthe members 22 and the clamp screws 23 being screw seated inthe. other arms of said clamp members. The hinges 21 are formed with cam surfaces extend. into the compartment 4,.there being 2a which bind against the false bottom 3 when the clamps 20 are folded and hold the clamps outwardly at an angle as shown in dotted lines in Fi 5, so that when the detachable bottom or cover plate 2 is placed in position it will press theclamps inwardly with the cam surfaces 24 binding against the false bottom 3 and urging the clamps outwardly against said bottom, whereby the clamps are held folded securely in-the compartment against rattling, as shown in full lines in Fig. 5.
To secure a case by means of our securing device on the running board of an automobile, the latch 14 is first disengaged from the apertured angle member 15 and the bottom 2 removed; the clamps are then moved-out of the compartment to the position shown in Fig. 2 and are drawn forwardly through notches in the lower edge of the front wall of the case, the hinges 21 sliding and swingingon the rods 19 (see Fig. 2-) the bottom 2 is then placed in position on the bottom of the trunk and secured by the latch 13; the trunk is then slipped on the running board of the automobile,
i with the front ofthe trunk flush with or on a carrying board; and means for urging within the outer edge of said board, and the screws 23 are then tightened against the under side of the running board as shown in Fig. l.
l/Ve claim:
