Description

T`. KELLY LEGGING Filed Aug. 4. 1925 Mheslses Patented Aug. 9, 1927.
PATENT OFFICE.
TOMAS KELLY, F BUTTE, MONTANA.
' Lucerne.
applicateur mea August 4, 192s. serial No. 127,127.
` This invention appertains to apparel and more particularly to a covering form for the calf of;y the leg.
One ofthe salient 'features of the present invention is the provision of a legging form adapted to be worn under the stocking and so Aformed as to .give 'a full shape to the calf of the leg, and an object ofthe invention 1s the provision of a celluloid form for engaging the calf of the. leg just below the knee and extending to the ankle, the shell being of a light weight and of a flesh color` whereby the same can be worn under the thinnest hosiery. l
A further object of the invention is the provision of a thin shell like form split longitudinally for snapping over the calf of a leg, the form being provided with delicate I split steel rings for normally maintaining the shell of the form in a closed position about the leg.
A further object of the invention is the provision of 'pads preferably formed of sponge rubber carried by the inner face of the shell for engaging the leg of the wearer whereby the device w1ll be exceedingly c omalso be a protection against the weather and y constitute means forconcealing I varicose veins, and the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of theabove character, which will be durable and efcient in use, one that will besimple'and easy to manufacture and which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost. With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated inthe accompanying draw- Os, in which drawings:
Flgure 1 is a perspective view ofthe inlproved device showing the same in use,
Figure 2 isa perspective view of the de- Vvice showing the same in its partly open position ready to be placed about the leg of a person,
Figure 3 Iis a detail horizontal section taken through the device showing one of the the improved device, which comprises a shell 10, formed of a resilient light material, such as Celluloid or the like. Inasmuch as the shell is of celluloid, it will possess considerable resiliency and be adapted to retain its shape, and furthermore inasmuch as molded Celluloid is smooth, there will be no liability of the stocking frictionally adhering to the surface of the shelly to cause puckering or other disarrangementof the stocking which, mightoceur if the shell were of a material presenting a rough surface, such for example as a cloth material. This shell 10 is molded so as to give the appearance of a'full shaped leg and the shell is split longitudinally as at 11 from oneend. thereof to the other. This slit portion can be either at the front or back of the shell. The materialis preferably of a flesh color so that if the same ."on the calf of the leg just below the'knee and is adapted to extend down to and about the ankle. Thus the shell itself engages the leg of therwearer at the knee and ankle.-
In order to maintain the shell in a closed position about the leg and the side edges of the split 11 in contact with one another, the inner face of the shell can be provided at spaced points with delicate spring steel split rings 12, extending about the inner side of the shell, and the ends of these rings are placed in registration with the split ofthe shell as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings.
In order to add to the comfort of the p'e'rson vwearing the device, the inner surfacefof the shell is also preferably provided with annular pads 13 which can be formed :Eromsponge rubber. The pads are also slit at the slit of the shell as shownl in Figure 4 of the drawings. It will be observed by reference to Figures 3, 4 and 5 of the drawings that the pads 13 are of greater cross sectional dimensions than the resilient rings 12 so that the pads will project inwardly a greater distance than the rings and consequently the rings will be prevented from coming'in contact with the skin. l
If desired the shell itself can be provided throughout its entire area or at certain defined points with minute Ventilating openings 14.
In applying the device to the leg, it is merely necessary to spring the shell open at the slit front thereof and place the same about the leg and after the release olf-the shell, the same will spring t o closed position and naturally adapt itselfto the leg.
The device will be found to be light in weight, easy to Wear and practically unnoticeable and is .especially adapted 'for protection against the cold'in -the winter.
Changes in details may be4 made wit-hout departing from the spirit or scope of this invention, but:
What I claim as new is:
1. A legging form adapted to be worn under a stocking and comprisinga shell shaped to conform to a full formed leg, the shell being slit longitudinally and adapted to engage the .leg adjacent to the ankle, a
plurality of resilient split rings secured to the inner face of the shell, and a plurality of split annular pads of sponge rubber sevcured to the inner face of the shell and of greater cross sectional dimension than the resilient rings. Y
2. A legging form adapted to be worn under a stocking and comprising a thin, longitudinally split shell shaped to simulate a full formed calf, resilient means for maintaining the shell closed, and .cushioning pads of relatively soft. material extending translversely about the inner side of the shell at diiferent elevations.
3. A legging -orm adapted to be worn under a stocking and comprising a thin shell Y slit longitudinally and shaped at its upper and lower. ends to respectively conform to THOMAS KELLY.
and snugly contact with the calf of the leg -below the 'knee and above the ankle, a plu-
