vLines 39 and 40 are' branched off from the flexible elements 35. The lines 39 and 40 extend outwardly and oppositely over certain of thc idlers 33, and thence downwardly, traversing the idlcrs 34, and tending in opposite directions therefrom.
rl`he flexible elements 40 are secured to the crank arms 31 of the shafts 29 while the flexible elements 39 are secured to the crank arms 26 of the shafts 24. A means is prof; vided whereby the elements 39 and 40 may be connected adjustably to the parts wherewith they coact. Thus, taking the crank arm 26 as typical, it will vbe observed that the crank arm 26 terminates in a finger 41,
whereon spool 42 is journaled for adjustment, the spool being held in place by a set screw 43. .j The spool 42 is provided with a perforated ear 7 30 to which the end of thc flexible element is secured. The flexible element 40 is wound about the spool 42 of the arm 31 and is engaged with the ear thereof, as'aforesaid. By rotating the spools 42, the flexible elements will be reele'd thereon, and when the set screws 43 are tightened up, theposition of the crank arm 26 and of the crank Handles 44, in the form of weights, are interposed in the flexible elements 40 and 39. An arm-45 projects from the drum 17. A flexible element 46 is attached to the arm 45 and is carried between guide rollers 47 journaled in a bracket 48 mounted on the gate 5. The flexible element 46 is connected at 49 to the latch 6. The drum 17 includes a top 731 which, resting on the end of the shaft 10 supports the drum.
Suppose that a. vehicle is approaching the device from the left, looking from the hinge post toward the latch post in Figures 1 and 2. The vehicle drives clear of the outside left hand crank 30, and engages the inside left hand crank 25, which is inclined with respect to the horizontal. The crank 25 transmits m'otion to the corresponding` shaft 24. The crank arm 26 on the inside left hand shaft 24 operates the drum 17 by way of the flexible elements S35- 40.
The drum 17 rotates independently of the i shaft 10, owing` to the provision of the 1rost motion connection 20-v-19. When the drum 17 rotates independently of the shaft 10, the flexible element 46 is pulled, and the latch 6 is raised out of engagement with the keeper 7, the gate thus being set free for swinging movement. One of the shoulders 19 now engages the projection 20, and motion is transmitted from the drum 17 to the shaft lO, the shaft being rotated. From the shaft 10, rotation is imparted to the shaft 11 by way of the gear wheel 15 arm 31 will be adjusted.-
Lessines and the pinion 12. From the shaft 11, rotation is imparted to the shaft 4, by Vway of the gear wheel 14 and the pinion 16. W'hen the shaft 4 is rotated, the gate 5 is swung to an open position, rapidly, owing to the ratio established by the relative diameters of the parts 151214-16, the ratio being inversely as vbetween the two Shafts, as two to one, the shaft 4 rotating twice as fast as the shaft 10. As the gate swings open, the latch 6 engages with the keeper 27 on the right hand post 28.
`When the drum 17 is rotated, as aforesaid, clockwise, the right hand flexible element 35 in Figure 1 is reeled onthe drum, and the right hand flexible element 39 in Figure 2 is raised, thereby elevatingr the corresponding closing crank to an angle of substantially forty-live degrees, being the outside vright hand crank. The vehicle drives clear of the inside right hand crank in Figure 1 and engages the corresponding closing crank 25. being the outer right hand crank,
whereupon the crank 25 is swung downward to ahorizontal position, the corresponding shaft V24 being rotated, and motion being transmitted through the drum 17, by way of the right hand flexible elements 39 and 35. Swing to the lost motion connection between the drum 17 and the shaft 10, the first operation is to disengage'the latch 6 from the keeper 27 on the post 28. Then, the .gate is swung to a closed positionV with respect tov the striking post 8. j
The foregoing operation presupposes that the vehicle is moving in Figures 1 and 2 from left to right. lf the vehicle movesv in an opposite direction, then thel cranks 30 become the actuating elements, the inside right hand crank 30 standing at substantially forty-live degrees, being the opening crank, the flexible elements and the crank arms 31 transmitting motion to the drum 17, through the flexible elements 35.
Having thus described t-he invention, what is claimed is f 1. In an apparatus of the'class described, a rotatably mounted shaft, a gate; means for connecting'the gate with the shaft, another shaft supported for rocking movement and having a vehicle engagingv crank and an arm, a Spool adjustably journaled on said arm and flexible element connected operatively with the shaft and wound about the spool and secured thereto.
2. In a device of the class described, a pair of shafts mounted in longitudinal alinement for independent rotation', a gate mounted on one shaft, means for operating the` other shaft, and a speed increasing gear train connecting the shafts.
