Application filed May 13, 1922. Serial No. 569,656.
My invention relates to locomotive boilers which are equipped with the so-called Nicholson thermic siphon, or the like, coniprisinp` a watei'-steaming-and-circulating wall which depends from the crown sheet ot the firebox and which receives water from the lower part of the boiler. delivering same upon the crown sheet of thev Firebox.. In particular, this invention relates to an improvement which is applicable to and which facilitates the installation oi such watercirculating devices `upon lireboxes oit the liellpaire type; that is, such as have practically `flat-topped wrapper sheets. stallingsiphons in such ireboxes a peculiar diiiiculty is encountered. Not only must the crown sheet ot' the Firebox and the siphon be well supported against the burstingv pressure of the contained steam, but likewise the flat top ot the boiler must also be stay-` bolted or otherwise supported against the steam pressure. rlhe object ot my invention is to obviate this di'liiculty and to provide adequate supports tor both the internal and external sheets ot the boiler and firebox.
My invention will be readily understood on rcterence to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. l is a vertical longitudinal section ot a locomotive boiler ot the Bell-.
stantially fiat outside wrapper sheet 3. The
thermic siphons 4T, i here shown are applied according' to standard practice. which is to remove one longitudinal row oit crown bolts and use the adjacent i'ows 5. 5 in the top flange oi' the siphon. VSo to do would leaver the intervening portion 3X of the wrapper sheet unsupported. To obviate this difficulty I employ a substitute middle` row of crown bolts 5, the upper ends ot which are secured in the wrapper 3, while the lower ends are attached to certain ot the stay-bolts 4 in the top of, the thermic siphon. Either several or all of the stay-bolts 4 in the upper row in the Siphon may be thus employed. By preference I substitute for the threaded stay-bolts usually employed in the In intop row oi the Siphon a row of strong rivets 6, which pass through sleeves or terrules 7.
rIhe latter serve to space the sides of the siphon apart and each thereoi' is provided with a boss. 7', which receives the threaded lower end ot the stay-bolt 5. This structure 'is simple and economical and easy to install initially. l
fis a substitute construction, I have devised that shown in Fig. 5, wherein I employ a stay-bolt 5X of the flexible type. The lower end of the stay-bolt is provided with an eye 5y through which the standard staybolt l passes. Flhe upper end ot the staybolt 5X is threaded and receives the ball nut S. The latter makes it possible to adjust the bolt accurately, and obviously rests withinthe socket 9, which is secured in the wrapper 3. y
I call attention to the fact that this present invention is adapted not only to a standard siplion having` the top flanges 41x depicted in Fig'. 3, but is .also adapted. ttor employment witha iiangeless siplion as depict d in Fie. 5 and as more fully discussed in my companion application entitled Locoinotive tireboxes, S. N. 550,655.
Although I have described this invention as applicable to tireboxes ot the Bellpaire or vflat-topped type, I desire that it be under.-v
stood that the invention may also be used lili) stays arranged in the median `plane oit the siphon and anchored at their top ends in the wrapper sheet and directly connected to the topmost staybolts connecting` said spaced iphon walls.
2. A locomotive lirebox having a crown sheet and a spaced wrapper sheet in combinationwitha thermic siphon positioned in the tirelooiz, said thermic siphon being composed of spaced, vertically disposed and longitudinally arranged walls opening through the Crown sheet, errules extending between the Walls of the siphon to space thein apart and each including a boss, rivets 5 passing through the said errnles, and said siphon walls respectively and L rou7 of stay bolts arranged in the median plane of the siphon and each threaded at one end tota ferrule boss and t the other `end operatively connected to the wrapper sheet.
In testimony whereof, l have hereunto set niy lizind =`this 6th dey of May, 1922.
