WINDOW FRAME AND SASH CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed November 2, 1926. Serial No. 145,759.
According to the present invention I produce a window which is easy'to operate and exceedingly tight, by providing two openings through the upper portion of the weight box wall which permit portions of the sashes to extend into the weight box for the attachment of the weight chains; but I close these openings below the center of the window so that no cold air can enter the jamb below the bottom-of the upper sash and work its way through chain holes or other openings into the room. It is necessary that guide channels be provided to control the movement of the sashes at the bottom of the window and for the sake of appearances the same guiding channels are made to extend the full height of the sash and preferably are provided by constructing the inner jamb wall with openings leading through it into enlarged chambers, from the upper back portion of which the second openings lead into the weight box. Theseenlarged chambers may be provided with stops of felt or the like at the center of the window to prevent air from passing up or down around the edges of the sashes. My invention can be readily understood from the illustrative example which I will describe, which also illustrates some improved details of construction. F
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a vertical section through the middle of a window embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a view of the window from the inside of the room with a part of the casing broken away; Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a top view of a portion of the lower sash; Fig. 6 is a front view of the same; Fig. 7 is a top view of a portion of the 'upper sash; Fig. 8 is a front view of the same; Fig. 9 is a sectional detail taken on line 9-9 of Fig. 10; Fig. 10 is a detail view of the middle portion of the jamb'face; Fig. ll is a side view of a form of rubbing block which I may use; Fig. 12 is a face view of the same; Fig. 13 is a sectional detail of the upper sash and lintel; Fig. 14 is a sectional detail of the lower sash and sill, and Fig. 15 shows a modified form of certain details. I I
Each jamb comprises a box member 10 which forms a portion of the inner face of the jamb at 12 and has an inwardly projecting portion 14. A member 16 forms a portion of the inner face of the jamb has an inwardly extending portion 18and also forms the weight separator 20.
Between the inwardly extendingportions l4 and 18 is positioned a lower batlle member 22 which has portions 24 and 26 extending back of portions 12 of member 10 and back of member 16 respectively. The ends of these portions may, if desired, be bent toward the rear wall of the jamb to stiffen this member. The upper portion of the bathe consists of a box or tube shaped member 28.
As shown in Figs. 9 and 10, a plate 30 extends behind the inner jamb wall half way up the window. Portion 26 of member 22 is cut away so that it extends only about half way up through member 30 and member 30 has a slot 32 coming down to the top of said portion 26. If the edge of portion 26 is to be bent toward the rear wali of the jamb, the bent-back portion should be cutaway to pass under member 30 is indicated at 34. The member 30 is wide enough so that the lower portion of member 28 can be attached to it.
It will be seen from the foregoing that each jamb consists of a tubular side member having closed grooves or channels formed in its inner face up to the middle of the window and having slots above the middle of the window which run back into the weight chamber.
The upper sash 36 is provided with a plate 38 adapted to extend into the groove between member 22 and portion 14 of member 10 from which extends a chain attachment hook 40 which is adapted to pass through one of the openings in the upper portionof the jamb into the weight chamber. Immediately above the chain hook 40. is a hooksha d portion 42 adapted to engage the rea face of portion 12 of member 10 to limit transverse movement of the sash. The upper ash can be moved downward until chain hook it) strikes the upper edge of plate 30.
The lower sash 43' has a plate 44 upon which is a hook shaped portion 48 adapted to enga e the rear face of tubular member 28 to imit transverse movement of the lower sash. As the lower sash is moved downward, chain hook 46 will pass into the pad 78 shown Fig" 15.
extending lug 50 which will limit upward movement of the lower sash by strilnng against the lower face of the lintel.
The lintel comprises two members 58 and '51) between which is formed en opening to receive the upper edge of the upper In this opening it provide a bent zine strip 62 as shown in detail in Fig" 13 to serve to preventair leakage at this point. Upward limit of movement of the upper sash is fined by an angle member tel which is slotted to receive the screws by Whici it is attached to the upper sash.
The sill 56 has a horizontal portion 68, stop Y0, ana slanting portion 1 2 Attached to the that portion a spring member it which is adapted to contact "with the face of the lower sash st ll, The sill construction herein described is not claimed. in the present application but is claimed my copending application, Sen No. 165,526, filed February 3, 1927.
in order to prevent air from leaking into the Weight chamber the upper sash is pro vided with a weather-stop T6 (see if desired, this may be combined with a felt in this figure memes the use of felt padding in connection with the lower sash is also shown.
"What I claim is:
1. In a Window-frame and sash construction, tubular side members forming Weight boxes, two vertical openings in each of said members extending down about half Way from the top, channels formed in the inner Wall of each of said members connecting with said openings and continuing the line thereof to the bottom of said members and sashes adapted to slide in said channels having weight attaching portions extending through said openings.
2. A device as specified in claim 1 further characterized by the fact that one side of the channel for the upper sash is formed by a member extendingin from the inner face of the tubular side member and the upper sash is provided with a Weather stop adapted to embrace the same.
3. A device as specified in claim 1 further characterized by the fact that one side of the channel for the upper sash is formed by a member extending in from the inner face oi the tubular side member, and the upper sash is provided with a. Weather stop which embraces a felt pad and also embraces said channel member.
t. A device as specified in claim 1 in which the channels are in the form of en larged chambers having restricted openings leading; through the inner jamb Wall.
