IMPROVEMENT IN MATS FOR BIRD-CAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,772, dated May 25, 1875; application filed April 12, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, A. B. HENDRYX, of Ansonia, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Bird-Cage Mat; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in

This invention relates to a mat to be placed in the bottom of bird-cages to afford an easy and convenient mode of cleaning the cage.
Sheet-metal mats have long been used for this purpose, but these are too cold for the welfare of the bird, and are liable to oxidation, as well as to be injured by jamming and other- Wise.
The object of this invention is to overcome these difficulties; and it consists in a mat formed from a sheet or sheets of wood, the edge inclosed by a metal band, as hereinafter described.
A is the mat, which is made to conform to the shape of the cage, and, preferably, from two or more thin sheets or laminae of wood, the grains of which run in different directions, the pieces glued together. Around the edge of the mat a metallic band, B, is placed, inclosing the edge and lapping upon both sides, and should be closed hard down upon the wood. This band strengthens and preserves the shape of the mat.
The mat is applied in substantially the usual manner of applying other mats, and as shown in Fig. 1.
This mat ofiers to the bird a wood surface for the floor of the cage, is easily cleaned, and cannot get out of shape, as will sheet-metal mats.
I claim As an article of manufacture, the herein-described mat for bird-cages, consisting of a wood body inolosed by a metal edge, as described.
