WATER-HEATING APPARATIIs. n
`Appiicauon inea January 7, 19M..k serial No. 684,878.
The invention relates to water heating apf n and forming a convenient means for drainparatus of that typein which the heating burner is arranged beneath the tank containing the water. Tit-li such constructions where the tank is cold,`the condensation of f moisture thereon together with absorbed gaseous products of combustion will produce a corrosive agent. This in turn will react upon the tank so that the drippings, it they p10 fall upon the burner, contains matter which frequently obstructs the gasdischarge ori ices. yIt is the object of the present invention to form asimple means'for protecting the burner from suoli drippings, said means also performing.another desira as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings c Figure l isa vertical section ythrough a. water heater to which my improvements are applied; f c, Figure 2 is an enlargedy section of a p0rtion of Figure l. f n As shown, A is a water tank, B a surrounding jacket therefor, and C a gas burner construction'I have changed the form ofthek tank by providing a 'substantially :dat ,por' tion D directly above the kburner and sui'- rounding this poi'tion by a bead or annular ldepression E, which is pressed in the metalk of the head.k yThus any condensation collect-y i ing on the side walls of the tank and flowing` down therefrom upon reaching the bead E will drop offoutside of the burner;
The bead E is utilized ,for the 'further function of forming a drain trough yfrom which the'water can be drained from ther To this end I connect the drain con-y 45 tank.
duitil? with the tank so asy to intersect this groove and as the bottoinportion D is flat `or substantially so, all of the iwaterwithinthe tank will flow into the groove. 50
of pressed sheet metal and by suitably forming the dies the bead E is formed in the same operation which forms the head. Thus without increasing the cost of manufacture, If have obtained a construction having the comy ble function,
within said acket and beneath the tank. It i The heads for the tank are usually made bined advantage of protecting the burner ing` the tank. .n
I/Vhat I claim as my invention is:
l. Ina water heater, the combination of C with said annular flue and a depressed portion extending slightly below the ,remain-y ingpoi'tions of said tank arranged to direct kthe drippings of condensed water away from said burner, said depressed portion being of such small height as to prevent any appreciable downward deflection of the combustion gasesk before entering the annular tine.
2. In awater heater, the combination. with` "a gas burner, ot' a. water storage' tank havH ing lower head formed of sheet metal, the entire area of which is located al substantial distance abover said burner, said head having a substantially flat area directly above the burner and an annular pressed out bead surrounding said flat area and depending onlyslightly ybelow the saine to cause the con'- densation to collect thereon whereby drippings therefrom will clear the burner.
3. In al water heater, the combination with a gas burner, of a liquid container having a lower head spaced a substantial distance above said burner, and means spaced' radially rinward from the marginal portions of said head and spacedradially outward from the f portion of said head directly above the gas burner for directing the drippings of condensed moisture away from the burner.
nel. Ina waterheater, the combination with ymarginal yportions of the head and lower than and surrounding the area directly above said burner.
5.V In a waterheater, the combination with a gas burner, of a water storage tank having a lower head spaced a substantial distance above saidfburner, sai-d lower head having the area directly yabove said burner of non-convex Iorm and also having a dea gas burner, ofa liquid container having a ico pending portion surrounding said areaand extending lower than the seme for directing drippings of condensed moisture away :from .said burner said head having a convex peripheral portion surrounding said depending l portion. Y 6. In a water heater, the combination with :L gas burner, ofeu water storage tank having a lower head spzioedfnA substantial dis- "f tance above sold burner, said lower head hav FRANK wf.y SHUELL. n
