Description
Patented July 26, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HARRIS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES R. BOSE, F EDGEWORTH, PENNSYLVANIA.
GASEOUS FUEL.
No Drawing. Application filed May 28,
This invention relates to gaseous fuels, and more particularly to a gaseous fuel which, when used in combination with oxygen, is especially adapted for the purpose of cutting and welding metals.
It is the general object of the invention to provide a gaseous fuel which will produce a relatively large flame volume, with a corresponding high production of heat units and 1 which will not result in a material lowering or reduction of flame temperature over that obtained by the combustion of acetylenea gas which has long been used for cutting and welding purposes.
I prepare a gaseous fuel by which the foregoing object may be realized by saturating acetylene with the vapor of one or more hydrocarbons, and more particularly with the vapor of benzine. The saturation may be ac- 20 complished in any commercial manner, as by passing the acetylene through a tank or other container having the benzine or other liquid hydrocarbon therein, a varying surface-exposure of the benzine to the acetylene being effected by means of Wicking or other capillary media. in contact with which the acety lenc is circulated. The amount of benzine 1923. Serial No. 642,090.
picked up or absorbed by the acetylene will vary with the amount of the surface exposure of the benzine to the acetylene. Ao cording to the surface exposure, the benzine vapor will constitute from not materially less than 5% to not materially more than by volume of the fuel mixture.
The resultant mixture possesses a flame temperature which is only slightly lower than that of acetylene alone, but with a large increase in heat units over that obtained by the combustion of acetylene alone. The gaseous fuel may be cheaply and conveniently obtained and will be particularly useful in welding, cutting or fusing heavy masses of metal, and in making cuts on dirty or oxidized metal.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:
A gaseous fuel for cutting and welding purposes, consisting of a, mixture of acetylene with not materially less than 5% and not materially more than 20% by volume of benzine vapor.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my signature.
JOHN HARRIS.
