- This invention relates to certain new and cooperates with the flanges 7 and 8 to form useful improvements in shuttles and pertains more particularly to shuttles of the hand threaded type.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a shuttle which has new and improved means for enabling same to be easily and quickly threaded, and which at the same time prevents accidental movement of the thread out of its operative relation to the shuttle.
The invention still further aims to provide means of the type mentioned which can be economically produced and easily and quickly applied to the shuttle and which is also positive and certain in operation.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention applied to a shuttle, the latter being shown in fragment Figure 2 is a side elevation;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the upper member of.the device removed;
Figure 4 is a section on line M of Fig. 1.
Figure 5 is a section on line 55 ofFig-i ure 1,
Figure 6 is a detail side elevation ofvthe upper member of the device;
Figure 7 is a similar view of the other side of the upper member;
Figure 8 is a side elevation of the lower member of the device and Figure 9 is a section on line 99 of Fig. 8.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, a shuttle 1 is employed having the usual delivery eye 2, into which slot 3 extends, the latter further extending through the top of the shuttle.
The present invention provides a two-part device wherein the top or upper part .or member 4 assists in retaining the lower part or member 5 in position.
The top member 4 has a front lip '6 of V-formin plan view and which curves clownwardly as shown in Fig. 6 and has a curved depending flange 7 along its front side, which flange has a part 8 disposed along the inner side of the top member. A hook 9 extends downwardly from the top of the top member at the front thereof and a longer or larger hook 10 also depends from the top of the top member butis located at the rear thereof. A shank 11 depends from the top of member 4 and has an extension 12, which a socket 13 for a scribed. .Shank 11 has a base14 provided with a concave upper face 15 that cooperates with the rear hook 10 to form a thread guide or passage 16. A stud 17 depends from base 14 andisreceived in a hole 18 provided therefor at the bottom of the usual shuttle cavity. The base 14 further has a lateral projection 19 which is received in a channel 20, the latter leading into'a depression 21 which is formed to receive the base 14. The top of the member 4 further has a ledge 22 projecting outwardly from its outer side and which fits in a cut-out 23 formed therefor inthe shuttle.
It will be thus noted that the'top part is effectively held in position. I The bottom part or member 5 is preferably made of porcelain and has a side rib 25 and a depending leg 26 which parts are received in cut-outs provided therefor in the bottom of the shuttle cavity. A thread receiving eye 27 extends transversely through, the member -5 and is guarded by a pair of fingers 28. V f
The upper end 29 of member 5 is shaped to be conformally received in the socket 13 at the under side of the top member 4, whereby the latter serves to hold the lower, member in position, and permits ready re moval of the lower-member upon removal of theupper member. A screw 31 passes through hole 31 in base 14 and thus holds both parts 4 and 5 in place. i p
To further rigidly hold part 5 inplace due to its being made of porcelain, a'sub stantially J-shaped bolt 33 is employed, the upper end. 34 of which is received in an opening provided therefor in theupper end of part 5. The lower end' of bolt 33, extends through the shuttle bottom and has a nut 35 thereon, by. means of which the part 5 can be drawn downwardly to engage firm-. ly in its seat. l i
In operation, to thread the-device, the thread is engaged with the lip 6 and with theupper parts of hooks 9 and 10 (Fig. 1) and then moved downwardly, and under hooks9 and 10 and under the hooks 28, entering eye 27 andthe delivery eye 2 of the shuttle. Thus the thread is guarded by four hooks 9, 10, and 28, 28 so as to prevent accidental unthreading of the shuttle.
purpose to belater de Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is 1. In combination with a shuttle, alower member having a leg. and a side rib received in cut-outs provided therefor in the shuttle and having atop and a transverse eye, .a pair of fingers guarding the eye, and a top member having a lip on its outer side, a shank having a base formed with a concaved part, a hook extending over the concaved part, a side projection anda depending stud on the base,the base projection and stud be ing received in cut-outs provided therefor in the shuttle cavity, the under faceof the top of the tOP'HIGHlbGI being formed with a socketreceiving the top of the lower member, a hook on the lip at the inner sideof the top member and a pin extending through the shank ofthe base to hold the two members in position. i
Q; In combination with a shuttle, a lower member having its lower part seatedin a cut-out provide-d therefor in the shuttle cavity, an upper member having a socket receiving the upper part of the lower member therein, meansto secure the upper mcnr berinposition, a pair of books on the upper member, the lower member having an eye communicating with the delivery eye of the shuttle, anda pair of hooks guarding the eye of the lower member.
3. In combination with a shuttle, a lower member having its lower art seated in a cut'out provided thereror in the shuttle cavity, an uppermember havinga socket receivingthe upper part of. the lower member therein, means to secure the upper mem ber in position, and guarding means for the thread on the upper member, the lower member having an'eye communicating with the delivery eye of the shuttle.

5. In combination with a shuttle, a lower porcelain member having thread engaging means, means engaging the upperportion of the member to fixedly secure same to the shuttle, an upper member disposed completelyover the top of the lower member and over the part of the securingmeans which engages the porcelain member having thread engaging means, and means to fixedly secure the upper member to the shuttle independently of the lower member sons to prevent breakage of the latter.
6. In combination with a shuttle, a lower porcelain member having thread engaging means, means to fixedly secure the lower member to the shuttle, an upper member disposed over the lower member and having thread engaging means, and means to fixedly secure the upper member to the shuttle independently of the lower member so as to prevent b'cakage of the latter, said upper member having a socket closed at its top and receiving the lower member therein so as to conceal and protect the latter.
7. In combination with a shuttle, a lower 7 thread guiding means on the respective members.
8. In combination with a shuttle, alower porcelain member having thread engaging means, means to fixedly securethe' lower member to the shuttle, an upper member'dis posed over the lower memberand having thread engaging means, and means to fixedly secure the upper member to the shuttle in dependently of the lower member'so as to prevent breakage ofthe latter, said upper member completely overlying the lower member so as toconceal andprotect. the latter. i
9. In combination with a shuttle havinga cutout, a porcelain member comformably seated inthe cutout, means engaged with-the topof the member to fixedly secure same in the cut-out, an upper member havingatop tormedwith a socket conformably receiving the upper end of the lower member and engaged over the part of the securing means that engages the top of the porcelain mem' ber and having a depending shank, said shuttle having. a depression to one side of the cutout, which depression provides a seat for the base of the shank, means to secure the upper member in position, and cooperating thread engaging means carried byithe members. V
10; In combination with a shuttle having a cut-out, a porcelain member seated in the cut-out, means engaging the top of the member and the bottom of the shuttle to clamp the member in the cut out, an upper member overlying the lower member and the clampingmeans thereof, and means to secure the upper member in position, said members having cooperating thread engaging means.
