This invention relates to new and useful improvements 111 rallway cars, and particularly to cars of the articulated type, and the object of the invention is to provide a car.
which will be of the oil and electric driven type, and in which the driving unit will be located atone end 01" the car while means will be provided at each end for controlling the car.
Another object is to provide a car of simple construction which will have a comparatively large seating capacity as well as a baggage compartment, lavatory equipment,
engine room, and control stations.
A further object is to provide an articulated or sectional car, the adjacent ends of which will be supported on a common. supporting means of the swivel 'bogie type.
In my invention I provide a railway car built in two sections mount-ed on three bogies, the central bogie being so positioned that it supports the adjacent ends of the sections. The engine room is located at one end of one of the sections, the other end of which is provided with seating accommodation for passengers, and between the ends a baggage compartment is formed to prevent or .deaden the noise of the working of the engine from annoying or disturbing said passengers. The other section is constructed for passenger accommodation, and communicates with the passenger compartment of the other section by means of a covered-in platform. The engine may be controlled from points positioned at the ends of the car remote from one another.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 11 designates an articulated car built.
in two sections '12 and 13;mounted on three bogies 14, 15 and 16, which may be of the railway type driven by motors (not shown). The bogies 14: and 16 support the remote ends of the car while the centre bogie 15 is so positioned that it supports the adjacent ends of the sections of the car. The bogies may be of of the Well known types used in railway car construction, that is, provided with suitable spring cushioning. or

Also secured to and positioned within the engine room, are the water tank 24, the fuel oil tank 25, and the lubricating oil tank 26. The operator of the car controls the movement of the car from one corner 27 of the engine room, and may be isolated therefrom by means of suitable partitioning means 28 provided with a swing door 29 to allow easy access to the engine for inspection and repairs. Within the control station at the engine room end of the car, is

A hand brake lever 31 and an air brake lever 32, may also be provided, and said controller and brake levers may be positioned in close proximity to the observation window 32 formed in the car side. A coupling 3401 the standard railway type may be, secured to the end of the car. Doors 35 may be provided in thepartition 20 to allow easy access from the engine room to the baggage compartment. A door 36 may be provided in the partition 21 between the baggage room and the passenger compartment of this section of the car. Sliding doors 37 and 38 are provided in the side of the car to allow baggage to be placed within or discharged frornthe baggage room.

Inoperation it will be seen that the car can be operated in b oth directions as 'provision hasbeen made so thatthe car may be driven from one end or the other. By making the entrance at one endot' the car, the

The car which is of the articulated type is self-contained and, means are provided to allow easy access to allpartsof the car. A folding door 56 may be provided in, the wallof the car communicating with the engine room so that said engine maybe quickly'and easily dismantled for repailiS,f inspection, andthe like, Lavatory space 57 may also be provided in the car in proximity to ,the exit door. It has been found in operation that the cost of running car of this type is comparatively small, and that it can be operated at a moments notice. By' providing couplers at the ends of the car, the same may be coupledto standard carriz' ges or cars} used forhauling same, and in. this operation it has been found that the cost of operation is very much below the cost of operating a steam driven driving unit for this work.
