TENT.
Application filed February 4, 1924. Serial No. 690,380.
I ing drawings.
Figure l of the drawings illustrates a section through the tent showing the tent in the process of erection. Fig 2 is a sectional view of the tentv showing the tent erected and the walls stretched. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 indicated in Fig. 2. Fig. et is a sectional view taken on the line 4-1 indicated in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view showing parts of the construction f'olded. Fig. G is a sectional View taken on the line 6 6 indicated in Fig. 5.
The tentis foi-med of canvas having the top and side walls l. It is also, preferably, provided with a floor 2. In order to sustain to the walls of the tent, jointed upright members 3 are located in the corners of the tent. The lower parts of the upright members 3 are preferably located Vin pockets 4 formed inthe corners, and so as to hold the lower parts of the upright members when the tent is in a more or less collapsed condition.
The upper ends of the uprights are connected together by a means for distending the uprights and at the same time rendering the walls of the tenttaut and smooth. rIo thus spread the walls of the tent, the upper ends of theupriglits, which are located in the upper corners of the side walls of the tent, are connected by. diagonally 'disposed jointed members and an element is located between the jointed members and the peak of the tent. In the form of tent shown the members 5 are pivotally connected to thimbles 6 and by a knife-blade joint 16 to the cross-shaped channeled member 7, and the screw 8, which sockets into the hub of the disc 9, is threaded through the cross-shaped member 7. The members 5 thus form links between the cross-shaped member 7 and the thimbles 6. The thimbles 6 are located on the upper ends of the members 3 and the screw 8 extends to the disc 9 located in the vpeak of the tent. As the cross-shaped piece 7 is forced down against the elasticity ofthe fabric by forcing the screw against the peak,- the tent walls are distended until the fabric is rendered taut. i
In order to render placement of the disi tending means easyin the erection of the tent, and in order that. assemblaofe of the frame may be readily performed, I have, provided a means for holding the links 5 partiallydistended to support the lcorners in a temporary osition, in order that the tent may be easi y entered yfor the purpose of erection. To thus hold the links 5 temporarily disteiided, a. second channeled cross-V shaped member is also located on thel screw 8 and is located below the cross-shaped member 7fso as to engage the links 5. The cross-shaped member 10 is provided .with the channels 1l in which the links 5 may be located, particularly at the outer ends of the arms ofthe member ll0. The angle at which the member l0 will hold the links 5 will depend upon the position that the members 7 and 10 are located relative to each other on the screw 8. may be inserted within the tent and the links 5 placed in the ends of the channels formed in the cross-shaped member 10. The two cross-shaped members 7 and 10 may be then placed in any desired 'position relative to each other and in any desired position on the screw 8 to produceythe desired temporary spreading of the top of the tent. The upper end of the screw 8 is then stepped into the hub of the disc 9 andthe top of the tent is raised. .If desired, in order to hold the top of the tent in its raised position,y a pole may be connected to the lower end of the screw. If the topof the tent hasbeen stayed by ropes, the tent will be sustained in its temporary raised position. The upper parts of the jointed members 3 may then be insert- `4, and the thimbles 6 may be placed upon. the upper ends of the parts 3. If a pole has been Thus, the distending means Y 10oy ed in the lower parts located in the pockets inserted between the lower end of the screw and the'floor of the tent, it may bewith-` lowered, thus causingthe links 5 to push out the thimble` 6 and consequently the upper ends of the uprights 3. in order to provide an easy connection with thepole for temporarily supporting the tent, the crank handle may be providedwith a hole 13 into whichV a pin 11i located in the end of the pole 15 may be inserted. j Y
In taking the tent down, the pealr and consequently `the distending means may be released until the links 5 are supported by the cross member? l0, and the pole 15,*which may be 'an awning pole of the tent, may be inserted in position to temporarily sustain the distending means. then be y"removedfrom the ends of the members 3 andthe-members disjointed.A Thereupon theV tent may be ylowered by with-V drawingthe ypole 1'5.
Whenithe tent has been taken down, the
distendingmem-ber may :be folded by folding vthe links 'vtogether This may bedone Aby rotating the cross-shaped member l0 so that'the arms of ithe cross member l() will be located betweenthe'links'-as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. v
