IMPROVEMENT lN FARM-FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.
163,658, dated May 25, 1875; application filed March 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID L. HOFFMAN and PARKER M. SHOEMATE, of Aullville, La Fayette county, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fences, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to the construction of fences, whereby they are rendered portable and more convenient and durable than fences of ordinary construction; and it consists in making the fence in sections, so that each panel may be separated into two longitudinal parts.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 of which shows an elevation of the fence, and Fig. 2 is a top view of the center of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This fence is composed of horizontal rails and vertical slats or cleats, and standards, having sills and braces, as shown in the drawing. A represents the rails; B, the vertical slats; 0, the sills, which rest upon the ground at right angles to the rails, to the ends of which are attached two braces, D and E, which brace the fence in each direction, as seen in Fig. 1. The brace D is long, and
reaches above the top rail and braces against the short cross-piece F, While the brace E is attached to the side of the fence below. The
standards H are attached to the sills at the bottom, and connected by the short pieces F at top. The ends of the rails are confined between the two parts of the standards, and separated by means of removable blocks or pins. Each panel is divided into two sections.
I is the upper section, and J the lower section.
The vertical slats B are attached to their respective sections, so that the sections are mutually supporting, and either one or both of the sections of any panel may be removed at pleasure. K are braces, which are notched in the middle of the panels for the rails, and fitted as seen in the drawing. L are braces, which confine the panels and sections together. By separating the sections a fence for the confinement of cattle and other stock may be made twice the length of the five rail fence seen in the drawing.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the detachable sections I and J and the posts supporting them, as shown and described, whereby the sections may be arranged one above the other, or end to end, as set forth.
