Application filed Deeember 0.1926. mm I 15am.
This invention relates to improvements in ressure control devices and is particularly intended for controlling the pressure produced b a pump 'or similar mechanism used 5, for. pro ucing pressure for washing automo-- biles or the like. 1 v
In devices of the above character the water is supplied by a pump or other device-to what is referred to in the art as a car washer gun, which gun has its nozzle. or outlet at times closed and at other times partially closed and it is the primary object of this improvement to cause a circulation of the water through the pump when the gun is shutoif or partially shut off. In carrying out this improvement I have provided a device that is located between the pum and the said gun, whereby when the sai gun is completely closed or partially-closed, the circulation of the water that otherwise would flow through the gun is returned through the pump to cause a continuous circulation of the water irrespective of the operation of the said gun. r 25 It will be understood that in the operation of a device of the character mentioned, the said pum will be continuously operating whether t e gun he in use or out of use.
In washin cars the user of the gun cuts it ofi complete y or partly from time to time, and when its use is stopped, the gun is cut ofi and by this improved device the water continues to automatically circulate through the gun is always rea y for use.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view on the line 11 of Figure 2. i Figure 2 is a top plan view of Figure 1.
I The drawings do not disclose a car washer gun since any form may be used that has means for controlling the flow of water through it. Therefore any ordinary nozzle that is adapted to be closed, may be used and it is deemed unnecessary to illustrate the said device. i The same is likewise true in connection with the water pump for supplyin the water under pressure to the nozzle 0 the gun. Any well known type of pump may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention, and it is therefore deemed unnecessary to illustrate the said pump.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which theloody of the device for effecting till this device and throu h the said pump, and
the above function, is designated by numeral 1, this body portion has an inlet 2. This inlet is suitably connected substantially directly with the pump, or a hose or like connection that has its opposite end connected with the pump (not shown). This inlet. 2 has Its inner end communicating with a suitable chamber 3 formed in the body portion 1. A check valve 4 is located at the bottom of the body 1 and it controls an oplening 5 that com- 'municates with a suitable c amber 6 thathas a return outlet 7 that communicates with the.
said pump (not shown). The housing also is provided with a space Sand above this over the diaphragm 9 and this chamber has an' outlet passageway or opening 16 that leads to the car washer gun or guns as the case ma be. This opening 16 may be in the wall 16 Attached to the top of this chamber 15, is an ordinary pressure dome 17 through a pass eway 17 that is connected with the said 0 amber 15 as shown. The object of this chamber 17 (which is partially shown) is to form an air pressure mthe uper portion of the chamber to cause a uniorm pressure at the gun or guns. In other words provides for the ordinary air pressure dome that operates as usual in connection with pumps. a
A plunger 18 is located under the. diaphragm and this plunger is provided with a downwardly extendin stem 19 that is in enlargement with the 516C]! valve 4-for a purpose to be presently explained.
A spring un barrel 21 is screwed into an olpenin 22 ormed in the lower portion of t e b0 1, and the lower end of this gun is clos by a suitable cap 22. Located in this barrel is a spring 23 that carries at its upper end a cap 24 that is in engagementv with the check valve 4 while its lower end 25 is in engagement with an adjustable part 26 that screws within the lower portion of the barrel for the purpose of regulating the upward pressure exerted by the said coil spring 23. For the purpose of connecting the inlet 2 directly with a pump structure, a lateral flange 1' is provided and it hasvbolt openings 3'. for dirt.
Having described the construction and its several parts and members, its operation will now be explained.
The ump being in operation, forces water throu the hose connection 2' to the cham-. her 3 rom which thewater is forced through the openings 11 and 12, thus lifting the check valve 13, hence into the chamber 15 through the opening 16 to .the hose and to the car washerguns. Assuming the guns to be in operation, the water flows in the manner just described. If one or more of theguns are closed on or the flow of water through one or more of these iscut down, then the pressure in the chambers 3 and 15 is increased. Conse uently the increased pressure closes the valve 13 and forces the diaphragm 9 downward, carrying with it the unger 18 and the stem 19, displacing the c eck valve 4 when part or all of the water will flow past the check valve 4 into the chamber 6 through the return passageway? to the said pumpi thus causingthe" water. to circulate throug the passageway to chambers 3 and 6 to the pump, 'etc., making it a continuous circulation through the ump'instead of throu h the gun or guns,- w ile at the same time e pump continues in o eration.
The above descri improvement'may be varied somewhat in detail without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention so long as it will come within a fair interpretav tion of the appendedclaim.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed and desired to secured by Letters Patent is: v
A pressure controlling device comprising a housing having upper and lower chambers substantially in a vertical line and a third bhamberlocated to one side of said chambers and below the upper chamber, said third the communication between the-lower cham- 7 her and said third chamber, said upper and .lower chambers having outlets, a diaphragm in the upper chamber, adownwardly projecting mem er actuated by the diaphragm for unseating the valve controlling the communication between the lower chamber and the.
third chamber, said third chamber having an inlet, whereby said device operates in the manner specific In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
