COLUMN-FORM eximir?.
Application led February 15, 1926. `VSerial No, 88,321.
This invention relates to improvement-s in column form clamps, and more especially to such a clamp adapted for use in` holding the boards or forms used in making concrete` or y similar columns or posts.
VMy improved clamp is strong and durable kyet cheap to manufacture; and it will befound very efficient and simple in use;
`The various bars formingr the complete clamp are falso interchangeable so that nov fitting or difficult selection of parts is required in the use of the device. Y
By the use of my invention, also, I am able to provide a clamp capable of very fine and accurate adjustment. Y r Other features andvk advantages of my invention will appear more fully as I proceed with my specification. i j
In that'form of device embodying the features of my invention, shown in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan sectional view through a column form. showing my improved clamp applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a view of the clamp in side elevati0n,'Fig.
` is an enlarged view in top plan of a part of the clamp, and Fig. 4 is a detailed view showing the spacing block atthe end of one of the clamp bars.
As shown in the drawings, 10 indicates a f wooden form for the concrete column of any desired construction, and here shown as composed of four separate boards placed together. The concrete is poured into the form in the usual manner and for the ypurposek of clamping and holding the boards forming the form securely in place during the pouringand setting of the concrete 1 provide clamps at suitable intervals.
I will now describe more in detail one of the clamps. As shown, the clamp consists of four separate bars indicated in gen-eral byv 11, 11. Since each of these bars is the same, I Ywill describe in detail but one.
The bar 11 is provided with a series of longitudinal slots 12, 12, at one end arranged at suitable intervals. The other end of the bar is provided with a loop made inl any suitable manner and here shown Vformed bymeans of the extension pieces 13, 13 riveted to the end of the bar by the two rivets 14, 14. It will be seen that the extension pieces 13,13 11 to form the open .loop 15.` The outer ends of the extension pieces 13, 13 are joined by means of a Vrivet 16 which carries pivare separated by the width of the bar v oted upon it between the extension pieces 13, 13 a square cam or spacing blocl; 17 to be described more in detailhereinafter. i
In the use of the device, the slotted' end of one .of the bars is inserted in the Aopen loop 15 of the adjacent bar. Each bar is provided with a wedge 18 to fit into any one Y of the slots V12, one edge ofthe wedge en-lv gaging theend wall of the slot intowhich it is inserted and the other bearing kon the outer edges of theV extension piece's`13,`13 and operating to force the barsfinwalrdly against the form. By providilnga series of these slots 12, 12 in each itwill be seenV that various adjustments are permitted.
Althoughthe spacing of the slots 12, 12 permits-certain adjust1nents,it will be seen 1 that` such adjustments cannot be finer than the distance by which the slotsareseparated. In order to permit finer adjustments than these I provide a cam or spacing block 17 at the end of each bar'pivoted on the rivet 16 joining the ends of the extension pieces 13, 13; It will be seen by reference to Fig. 4 that the block 17 is free to turn on the rivet 16 but that this rivet is not placed in the center of the block. ranged so that by turning the block 17 into the four positions indicated by17, 17a, 17b and 17, the bearing edge against which the adjacent bar 11 rests, and as indicated in Fig. 4 by 117, 117, 117", and 117c respectively, will vary in its distance from the end of the bar. Preferably, the cam or spacing block 17 is made of such a size and the hole in it through whichthe bolt 16 passes is so located that turning of this block will give four adjustments, fthe aggregate distance of which is substantially the same as the distance `betwen two adjacent l'slots 12. 'By this arrangement it will be seen that it isl possible to obtain four additional adjustments or spacings betweenl any two-of the slots 12. This is accomplished, as stated, by
turning the block 17 into one of its fourV positions. Y
While I have shownand described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it 'is capable of many modiications. Changes,y therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made It isv eccentrically ari without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in rmyl .invention asV nu Y broadly as possible in view of the prior art. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A form clamp comprising; a plurality of bars, each bar having a series of slots at intervals therein at one end and an elongated loop at the other end, said loop adapted to receive the slotted end of an adjacent bar; a Wedge for each bar adapted to lit Within a slot in the end of a bar projecting beyond the loop With one edge bearing against the outer end Wall of the slot and its opposite edge bearing against the outer edge of said loop; and adjustable means for holding the end of a bar Within a loop at different distances from the end of said loop, said means comprising a spacing block provided vvith a plurality of differently spaced abutment faces.
2. A form clamp comprising; a plurality of bars, each bar having a series of slots at intervals therein at one end and an elongated loop at the other end, said loop adapted to receivel the slotted end of an adjacent bar; a wedge for each bar adapted to lit Within a slot in the` end of a bar projecting beyond the loop' with one edge bearing against the outer end Wall of the slot and its opposite edge bearing against the outer edge of said loop; and adjustable means for holding the end of a bar Within a loop at different distances `from the end of said loop, said means comprising a spacing block provided with a plurality of differently spaced abutment faces, any one of said faces adapted to be placed into operative position by movement of the block.
3. A form clamp comprising' a plurality of bars, each bar having a series of slots at intervals therein at one end and an elongated loop at the other end, said loop adapted to receive the slotted end of an adjacent bar; a Wedge for each bar adapted to fit Within a slot in the end of a bar projecting beyond the loop with one edge bearing against the outer end Wall of the slot and its opposite edge bearing against the outer edge of said loop; and adjustable means for holding` the end of a bar Within a loop at different distances from the end of said loop, said means comprising a pivoted spacing block provided With a plurality of differently spaced abutment faces, any one of said faces adapted to be placed into operative position by rotation of the block.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 13th da)7 of February, 1926.
EDWARD E. DAVIS.
