lApplication led January 5, i927. Serial No. 159,073.`
improvements therein. ,In` devices of thisy kind the binding tape or tongues which are flexible or bendable, areattached to one of the covers and are received in slots provided in a guard plate secured to the other cover, over which guard plate they are bent down, means being provided for holding the bent down portions of the tape ends or tongues'in position against accidental displacement.
i The object of the present invention is to simplify and improve the construction of the means for holding the tongues in position against displacement. `This We accomplish by providing means in spaced relation to the tongue-receiving slots in the guard plate for `holding the bent down tongues against accidental displacement. Preferably said means are formed integrally from the guard plate by slitting the same to provide resilient lips under which the bent down tongues are adapted to be received and held.
The invention alsoincludes other features of novelty which will be hereinafter more fully described. Y
A preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a plan view of a lile embodying our invention, a portion thereof being broken avvay.`
Fig. 2 is a fractional view of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 3 is a section taken lon line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4. is a section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig.' 2.
Referring to the drawings, let A, A indicate the covers of afile or binder, B the back, and C and D the fillets or guards for supporting the binding elements of the ile.
` As shown, the guards C and D are formed integrally with the covers and back by hav-y ing portions of the material from Which said parts are formed bent back upon itself 0 in a manner Well known in the construct-ion of binder files. Supported by the guard C in any desirable manner are a pair of flexible tongues E adapted to receive and-hold t-he papers F to be filed, the free end porr tions e of the tongues being receivable in lateral'slots in the lguard` D, after which they maybe bent down over said guard to hold the papers against removal. To pre- ,vent undue Wear on the guard` D it is provided with a ksubstantially U-shaped sheet metal guard plate .G having lateral slots g coinciding with the slots in the 'guard D, said slots beingeach formed With an incut or offsetopening g, the purpose of which will presently appear. The guard plate G is also preferably formed with the means for receiving the free ends e `of the tongues after they are bent down over the guard plate 'to hold said tongues against accidental disf placement. 'The file asthus far described corresponds to the conventional type of files or temporary binders of the `generalclass to which the present invention relates.
According to the' present inventionV improved and simplified means arepprovided on the guard plate for receiving and holding the bent down ends ,of the tongues against accidental displacement. These means preferably consist of a pair of re-` silientzlips H disposed in spaced relation to the tongu-efreceiving slots, said lipsbeing integrally formed from the metal of the guard plate Gr and adapted to laterally receive the bent down tongue. ends e. f
The lips H are preferably formed by the plate being slitted, as at L, through the bight of the U, said slits preferably extending e through both faces of theplateLthe top face of the plate being alsoslitted, as ath', ybetween the slits t to provide the free end of the lips. The topk face of the lips H nor mally lie in the plane of the top face of the guard plate, and to facilitate the reception of the tongues beneath said lips the free end thereof are raised or bent up above the plane of the guard plate, as best shown at h2 in Fig. 3. vAlso, to further facilitate the entrance of the tongues under the lips, the freeends thereof are inclined in a direction so as to progressively receive said tongues as they are laterally positioned beneath the lips. To render th lips H more resilient and afford them greater clamping power, they are provided with a struck-up rib its extending longitudinally thereof.
In use the file or binder of the present invention is quite similar to those heretofore used in so far as the applying of the papers to be filed therein and the reception of the tongues upon which said papers are tiled in the lateral slots Within the guard plate are concerned. Beyond this point the action or the present binder is believed to be more simple and, etlcient than those or" previous rial and economy of tiine and labor in its production. As will be apparent, the metal guard plate is preterably'stamped in the form of a flat blanlr at vvhich'time all ineisions and slitsmay be made therein prior to the bending of said plate ,to its U-shaped form.
While We have shown and described a prelierred embodiment ot' our invention it will be understood that We do not wish to be limited to the precise structure disclosed, since moditications thereof may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit ot the in vcntion. Y 'v What We claim isi l. A ile or binder for sheets of paper and the lille comprising a cover having opposite leaves and a flexible bacli: connected to said cover leavesby fillets,` a flexible tongue attached to one fillet and a guardfplate attached to the other .lilletf'and formed with an opening slot adapted tor laterallyV receive said flexible tongue, saidguard plate having a metallic lip in spaced yrelation to the opening slot, said lip being adapted to receive and hold the tongue when it is Lbent down over' said guard plate.
2. Allle or binder for sheets of Daper and the like comprising a memberY having a tongue upon which sheets of paper can be mounted, and a sheet metal memberhaving a slot adapted to laterally receive said tongue and permit it to be bent down to lie flat against said niet-al member, said metal membei' having an integral resilient lin formed by slitting and striking up a portion thereof in spaced relation to the slot therein, said lip being adapted to laterally receive said tongue VWhen it is bent down against. said metal' member and to hold said tongue against accidental displacement.
3. A tile or binder ol the type described comprising a sheet metal guard vplate of U- shape in cross-section having a transverse slot therein extending through the bight of the VU andan integral resilient lip in spaced relation to saidslot extending from the bight ot the U toward the open end thereof, with the free end of the lip raised above the plane o't` the guard plate.
Ll. A lile or binder of the type described vcomprising ak sheet metal Iguard plate of U- shape in cross-section havinga transverse slot therein extending through the bight of the U and an integral resilient lip in spaced relation to said slot, said lipl `beingr provided by the plate being slit-ted through the bight ot the U, the free end of the lip raised above the plane of the guard plate.
5. vA tile or 4binder of the type described Comprising a sheet lmetal guard plate ot U- shape in cross-section having a transverse Aslot therein extending'through the bight of the Uland an integral resilient lip in spaced relation to Said slot, said lip 'being provided by the plate being slitted through the bight of the U, the lip having its topl face lying normally in the plane of the top tace of the guard plate and having astrucloup ribextendine' longitudinally of the lip with the Vfree end of the lip raised above the' plane of the guard plate.
In witness whereof, we have hereunto signed. our names.
GEORGE E. DOUGHTY. HERMAN FORTH."
