This invention'relates to shuttle `guards for looms and has for its object to provlde a 'construction which is simple to manufacture and more efficient in use than` those heretofore proposed.
With these and other objects in `View thev `invention consists inthe novel details of construction and arrangements of parts, all as will be more fully disclosed hereinafter and particularly pointed out in vthe claims.`

1 represents a suitable support or framework carrying the lay 2 in which the shuttle 3 is adapted to travel from a shuttle box 4 at one side of the loom to a corresponding shuttle box, not shown, on the other side of the loom, the. shuttle being moved from one side to the other of the loom in the usual and well known manner. In order that the shuttle 3 may not become damaged of itself, or do damage to the shuttle box into which it is projected, there is provided at each end of the lay, a device made in accordance with this invention which will so straighten out the course of the shuttle that said damage may not be done.
This guard comprises a roller 10 havlng ri idly secured in its center a bushing .l1 a apted to'revolubly engage a sleeve 12 1nserted therethrough andsurrounding a bolt 13 carried by one leaf 14 of a hinge whose other leaf 15 is adapted to be rigidly se-v cured as by a bolt 16 to the cover plate 17 of the lay 2. The sleeve 12 makes possible the mounting ofthe bolt 13 in substantlall the hinge, said sleeve 12 being confined between said leaf 14 and a washer 18 clamped by the nut 19, all as will be readilyunderstood with particular reference to Fig. 4.
The roller 10 and its supporting hinge are both so disposed on the loom that the roller 10 when in operative position ywill have its axis formed by the bolt 13 1disposedV in a horizontal plane, or in' other words, the roller 10 when in operationwill Contact with the upper surface of theshuttleB, the roller 10 being adapted for ready rotation about its axis. The roller 101s preferably made of rubber and'said roller is so disposed that it extends below the plane of the topof the shuttle in the lay about ,1g of an inch -or slightly less, so that whenthe shuttle is about to enter the box 4, it will'strike the rubber roller 10, thus straightening out the course of the shuttle. f
i In order that-the shuttle 3 may be removed or taken ,out of the shuttle box 4 if necessary,
the roller 10 and its hinge support is adapted toLbe raised into an elevated position so that said shuttle may be readily removed. With particular reference toFigs. 2 and 3 it will be seen that the former shows the roller 10 in down or operative position, whereas in Fig. 3 the roller 10 is shown turned about eok the pivot or hinge so that-said roller and its axle 13 are raised to a position well above f the top surface, represented by the dash line 20 of the shuttle 3. In order that the said roller may be4 retained in 'its elevated or inoperative position, the leaf 14 of the supporting hinge has riveted or otherwise secured thereto a spring 25 whose free end is turned at substantially a right angle to its base port-ion 26 and clamped as clearly shownV in Fig; 4 to spring over the edge 27 of the other leaf 15 of the supporting hinge. Thus it will be readily seen that the roller 10 may effectively be retained in its raised of engagement with said shuttle, said roller being attached to one leaf only of the hinge, Further this device has combined therewith spring means comprising the clamp or clip 25 secured `to the leaf of the hinge supporting the roller, said clip coacting with the y roller to permit'movement of the same out a perpendicular relation with the leaf 14 of edge of the other leaf ofthe hinge to secure the roller in a position out of engagement with the shuttle.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art therefore it is not desired to he limited to,
the forgoing disclosure except as may be demanded by the claims.
Thatis claimed is 1, In a device of the character described the combination of a yieldalole roller adapted to frietionally engage a moving shuttle when in one position; hinged means to permit movement of said roller` out of engagement with said shuttle; and spring clamping means to secure said roller in said last named position.
2. In a device of the character described the combination of a. roller adapted to frictionally engage a` moving shuttle when in one position; means to permit movement of said roller out of engagement with said shuttle; and means comprising a spring clip secured to said last named means to, secure said roller in said last named position.
3. In adevice of the character described the combination of a roller adapted to frictionally engage a moving shuttle when in one position; means comprising a hinge one leaf'of which supports said roller to permit movement of said roller ont of engagement with said shuttle; and means to secure said roller in said last named position.
