Description

H. F. KEELER, JR
BERRY BOX Filed Jept. 20, 1926 g l-w INVENTOR I HfKft-Lt/e J/a ATTORNEYS Patented July 19, 1927.
HARRY FRANCIS KEELER, JR, OF LONGMONT, COLORADO.
BERRY BOX.
I Application filed September 90, 1926. Serial No. 138,843.
My invention relates to improvements in boxes, particularly in berry boxes, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and cla med.
Anobject of my invention is to provide a berry box which may be made of wood, cardboard, or other suitable mater al from one piece which is folded so as to make the cmplete-box.
provide a box in which the bottom is remforced by supporting flags which are struck from the single piece used n making the box.
A further object of my invention is to provide a box of the type described which may be quickly put together, and which requires v a minimum amount of work for turning out the completed box.
Other objects and advantages Wlll appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accom- 'panying' drawings, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a view of the blank from which the box is made,
Figure 2 is a perspective View of the box in a partially completed condition, showing the manner 'inwhich it is folded,
Figure 3 is a plan view of the completed box, and l a Figure 4 is a sectional view along the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
In carrying out my 1nvent1on, I provide ablank which is formed in one plece and is of the shape shown in Figure 1. This comprises a portion l.'Wh 1Cl1 forms the bottom of the box, and a strip extendmgat right angles thereto which forms the sides and ends of the box. As will be seen from Figure 1,this strip is scored, as ndicated in dotted lines at 2. At certa n intervals, I
have provided openings 3 which are m the nature of elongated slots. On one side of the strip is an L-shaped cut 4 at the center of two sections which form the s1des. Be-
tween the bottom portion 1 and the laterally I extending strip is an inwardly extending cutaway portion 5. At 6, I have shown a scored line extending transversely of the por tion 1. At the end of the scored lme 6 is A further object of my invention is to,
a cut 7 extending to one edge of the bottom portion 1,,while a similar cut 8 at the opposite end of the scored line 6 extends to the:
cutaway portion 5. The scored lines are for the purpose of permitting the sections to bend readily along the lines, but they are not deep enough to weaken the sections.
From the foregoing description of the va nous parts of the device, the manner of forming the box may be readily understood,
The bottom portion 1 is first bent along the line 6 at right angles to the laterally extendmg strip and the strip is then folded around the edge of the bottom portion in the manner indicated in Figure 2,"the corners 1 of the,
bottom portion 1 passing through the openings 3. The end portion 9 adjacent to the cut 7-is bent inwardly as shown in Figure 2, and the end 10 is brought around iflush with th'eoutside of the section 11 and is secured to-it in any suitable manner, as by staples 12.- The sections 13 adjacent to the L- shaped cuts 4 are then bent underneath the bottom and the box is complete.
It will be noted that the bottom is supported at its four corners as well as along the edge of the scored line 6. The portions 13 are so positionedas to be substantially at the central bottom so t at the central portion of the box is reinforced by these su ports. I
The construction descried above makes a chea and yet a strong box which can be uio ly made at a minimum cost.
I claim:
A box comprising a bottom portion having an integral strip extending laterally from one end thereof, said strip having a scored line for folding one end thereof at right angles to the bottom and being provided with slots disposed inwardly from one edge of the strip in alignment with said scored line and arranged to receive ,the corners of the box, said strip having L-shaped cntsextendportion of the box underneath the I
