This invention relatesto an impaling trap, and particularly to a construction including a sliding iinpaling member associated with a retaining trigger adapted to be released by 5 an animal coming in contact with a portion as to automatically set the trigger as the pin is retracted to engage thetrigger finger with a retaining plate upon the frameof the pin. The supporting frame orblock is also formed with an opening for access to the bait holderof the trigger that it may be manipulated without danger of injury fromthe ins when in retracted position, and this block is further formed with an abutment which cooperates with such impaling pins when projected. v The construction as developed is adapted tofbe economically manufactured and provides a support for the slidingpins andtheir V [pivoted triggerin cooperation with the abutment tobe engaged by said pins.
' The invention has for an object toprovide a novel and improved construction of impaling trap including a base having a sliding .impalingipin thereon which is retained in retracted position by a trigger member, such trigger andpin being connected by a spring to insureljoint operation thereof and effect the automatic setting of the trigger as the vpin is retracted. A further object of'the inventionisto provide a construction of support provided with an abutment and a spaced surface upon which the sliding frame of an impaling pin ismoun ted, together with a pivoted trigger cooperating with .a retaining plate carried by theiframe of the impaling pin.
Another object of the invention to provide a construction in which the trigger member with its bait carrying portion and retaining finger may be tornied of a single piece of material while the impaling pins are formed of a. U-shaped frame connected adjacent the pins by a retainingplate having a lip thereon adapted to engageland ride over the trigger in the retracting movement of the ,pins.

The frame 15 is provided adjacent the pins 12 with a retaining'p1ate18 secured'theretoand hav ing an overturned edge 19adapted "to cooperate with .the finger 20 of the pivoted trigger This trigger may be mounted in a kerf orway 22 formed in the body 10 of the base and comprises a single piece of wire having at its free "end a bait "retaining plate '23 and bent upon itself at '24 to receive an actuatingspring 25 which extends therefrom to a linkoreye 26 at'the bend-'16 of-the pin 'frame.

This trigger is pivotally mounted in a novel manner by means of pin 29 which is loosely inserted in an aperture 30 of the block and retained in position therein by a driven device 31' intersecting the aperture 30. if it be desired to remove the trigger the device 81 is withdrawn and the pin will gravitate outward through the passage 30 when the base is suitably inclined. By connecting the pins and trigger through the spring member 25 a joint operation is effected which causes the automatic setting of the trigger and in this retracting moven'ient of the pin the plate 18 rides over the retaining plate of the pin until it is thrown into engagement with the outer edge thereof by the increasing tension of the spring. in order to suitably depress the finger of the trigger during this movement an upwardly deflected lip 32 is provided upon the plate 18 which causes the plate to ride over the finger until the latter reaches an engaging position. The block is also provided with an opening 33 by which convenient access may be secured to the trigger inorder to arrange the bait thereon or, determine a sensitive setting thereof without danger of the operator coming into the field of action of the inipaling pins and being injured thereby in case of accidental release of the pins.
The operation of the invention will be apparent from the foregoing description from which it will be seen that the trigger may be very sensitively set so that the slightest contact therewith either in removing the bait or otherwise will trip the trigger finger from the retaining plate and permit the full tension of the spring to project the pins which impale the animal and force it into contact with the cooperating pins upon the abutment member.
The construction shown presents a simple, efficient, and economically manufactured form of trap in which the base provides a suitable abutment with a supporting surface for the sliding pins and pivotal mounting for the trigger while the bin member is adapted to be formed from a single piece of material having its free ends connected by the retaining plate and the trigger member similarly formed from a rebent strand providing the bait support, the trigger pivot, the spring connection and the retaining finger. Such construction by directly connecting the trigger with the impelling spring for the pins provides an automatically operating construction which avoids the danger of setting such a trap.
The details of construction have been shown and described but the invention is not confined thereto as changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An impaling trap comprising a base, a sliding impaling pin mounted thereon, a trigger member for retaining the pin in retracted position, and a spring having a permanent connection with the trigger and pin to effect the automatic engagement of the trigger with the pin when th pin is retraeted.
2. An impaling trap comprising a base, a sliding impaling pin mounted thereon, a trigger member for retaining the pin in retracted position, a spring connecting the trigger and pin to effect joint operation thereof, and an abutment carried by the base opposite the free end of the impaling pin and provided with a fixed impaling pin.
An impaling trap comprising a base having an abutment, a sliding impaling pin mounted upon said base and a retaining plate, a pivoted trigger having a bait carrying arm and a finger disposed to engage said plate, and a tension spring extending from said trigger to said impaling pin.
4-. An inipaling trap comprising a base having an abutment, a sliding impaling pin mounted upon said base and provided with a retaining plate, a pivoted trigger having a bait carrying arm and a finger disposed to engage said plate, a tension spring extending from said trigger to said impaling pin, and means upon said retaining plate to cause th same to depress the finger of the trigger in the retracting movement of the pin.
5. An iinpaling trap comprising a base having a supporting surface, parallel impaling pins connected together and slidingly mounted upon said surface, a retaining plate extending between said pins adjacent the free end thereof, a pivoted trigger including a bait arm and a retaining finger to engage said plate, and a spring extending from the rear of the pivot of said trigger into engagement with the connected pins.

An impaling trap comprising a base, sliding impaling pins mounted thereon provided with a retaining plate, an integral trigger member including a bait carrying arm at one end and a rebent opposite end forming a. retaining finger and pivoting socket, and a tension spring extending vfrom the rebent end of said trigger to the impaling pin.
9. An impaling trap comprising a base, sliding impaling pins thereon provided with a retaining plate, an integral trigger member including a bait carrying arm at one end and a rebent opposite end forming a retaining finger and pivoting socket, a tension spring extending from the rebent end of said tr gger to the lmpaling pin, a pivotfor said trigger removably disposed in a recess in the base, and means for retaining said pivot against removal from said recess.
10. An impaling trap comprising a base having at one side a horizontal supporting surface, spaced by an intermediate recess from an abutment at the opposite end of the base, said spaced portion being provided with an aperture to permit access thereto, a sliding impaling pin mounted upon the supporting portion to engage the abutment, and
a trigger engaging said pin and disposed intermediate the pin and aperture and in alignment with said aperture.
