. I My invention relates the construction oi" the casing of automobile heaters which derive their heat =fr0m the exhaust of the engine (not shown), by means of elbows extendin up through thereo into a radiator contained therein.

The objects of my invention are to-provide doors in the bottom of the casing that can be easily opened or closed frorn above and through which the dirt and dust falling therein can be discharged when said doors are opened, substantially as hereinafter fully vdescnbed andas illustrated in the claims.

In the drawings the casing is shown tobe pan-shaped and consists of a fiat outwardly flanged rim 7 10, side walls '11, depending downwards and inwards therefrom, and a' bottom 12 that inclines at the sides and ends toward two rectangular openings or-doorways 13, 13, located on each 'sideof the transverse center ofthe casing. T These openings or doorways 13, 13 as shown in the drawings, are preferably, longer than they are wide, and they are closed-by doors or traps, 1414, whose inner edges are provided with suitably spaced knuckles 15 which connect with the knuckles 16, 16, madeintegral with. the inner longitudinaledges ormargins of the doorways.

7 The bottom of the casing between the doorways is provided with an upwardly 'projecting longitudinal rib 17, that inclines towards the ends and sides thereof, and dis-.

appears in about the transverse plane of the ends of the doorways. the bottom of the casing andzprovides a seat .for the cross bar as hereinafter described.

The bottom in alignment with the ends of the rib is flattened, and in this flattened area are openings 18, 18, down through which the receiving-stub 18 of the radiator at one end of the casing and the-discharge-stub at the other end thereof, (not shown), depends downwards from the radiator 19.

The rib reinforces clined toward the doorways and at its center of length it is provided with a hole 20 for 14, 14, and keep them closed. Said stem or shaft has a cotter-pin 25 at a suitable point between the bottom of the casing and the slightly beyond the center of width of doors perforated cover-plate 23. A washer 26 is placed immediately" below this cotter-pin and between this washer 26, and top of the rib 17, a coil extension-spring 27 surrounds the shaft or stem 21, and keeps saidshaft or stem and cross-bar always pressing upward.

Ordinarily said cross-bar 24 is in a transverse position, substantially as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, and when it is desired to opensaid doors the stem is turned laterally by inserting a screw-driver in the slot 28 in its upper exposed end, and given a quarter turn. This places the cross-bar in a longitudinal position in the concave portion of the reinforcing rib 17, and permits the doors to drop, substantially as shown in Fig- 11 -94; t

The cross-bar is pivotally connected to the shaft or stem to equalize upward pressure on the doors even if parts are in slight misalinement. i

A casing for an automobile heater which is pan-shaped and has a doorway in its bottom, a door hinged to one of the edges of said doorway, a rotatable stem extending from adjacent said door to the top of the casing, and means operatively conne'ctin said door and stem whereby the opening an closing of said door is controlled.

6. In automobile heaters, a casing having an open bottom, a heat radiating element therein, hinged means for opening and closing the casing bottom, a grating on the easing and a central operatm stem terminatve the grating adapted-to control the opening and closing means.

7. A container for an automobile heater comprising a. casing and cover therefor, said casing provided with a plurality of cleanout openings in its bottom, doors for opening and closing said clean-out openings, and means accessible through the cover for controlling the operation of saiddoors. v

A container for an automobile heater comprising -a casing and cover therefor, said casing provided with a pairof side by side clean-out openings. in its bottom, doors hinged the edges of said openings for opening the same; and'means accessible through the cover for controlling the operation of said doors.
