Description

. 1,635 570 1927' E. w. M. BAILEY WINDOW GLASS GUIDE Filed June 9. 1926 fiverzi'ory Patented July 12, 1927.
UNITED STATES} "PATE N orFic WINDOW-GLASS GUI-DE.-
Application filed June 8,1926. Serial no. 114,711.
This invention relates to means for guiding vertically sliding sheets of window glass employed in automobile bodies of the closed I opening. This arrangement has been found type, and, more particularly to a type of guide illustrated in my'prior Patent No.
1,521,168, which comprises a strip of resilient metal shaped in channel form and lined with felt, or like cushioning material.
Guides of these types are used in connectionwith various doorand-frame constructions, with many of-which' much; difficulty is encountered in replacing broken glass, as
the guide must usually be extended for some distance, afoot or more, below the level of the window rail at the lower end of the opening, and, while the ortion of the guide above this oint may e usually removed; or-
displaced y removing a molding strip at one side of the guide, access to the portion of the guide beneath the window opening is usually difficult, so thatthe'labor expense incident to replacing the lass has often been greater than the cost of the glass alone. On
. account of this diificulty, and because of the fact that a. metal channel strip, 'such as above referred to, cannot be bent without serious detriment thereto, I have adopted the expedient of making each guide in two sections which terminate at adjacent ends ashort distance below the lower end-of the window opening, so that the moldings .at
I the sides of the upper sectionsand the sill may be removed, permitting the upper sections also to be removed, so that they may be placed on the edges of the glass and'then the glassmay be placed'in the opening and slid down into the guide sections below the to be objectionable, b' reason of the tendency of the felt lining to e displaced or pressed into bunches at the top end of the lower section, so as to obstruct the guideway, and the primary object of my present invention is to provide a form of felt lined spring metal channel which will enable the window glass to be replaced in the manner above indicated and which will avoid the difficulty of having the felt lining displaced when the glass is inserted in the lower section, or is slid downward therein. e e
I'accomplish these objects in the manner hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of awindow glass guide embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof partly in section showing the guide in position to permit insertion of the glass sheet.
Fig. 3 is a similarview of afportion of the guide, in normal position.
Fig, 4 is a transverse sectional view and Fig.--5 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the guide in the position of Fig. 2. I
In the drawings a indicated, having removable molding strips '2, at each side of the window opening, which extend from the top to the bottom of the opening and form grooves for the reception .of themetal channel strip 3, which is lined with a felt cushioning strip 4, as disclosed in saidprior patent.
According .to my invention I. form the metal channel strip 3, at each side of the window opening, intwo sections-viz an up-'.
window casing 1 is per section 3*, which extends fromthe upper end of the opening to a point a short distance below the lower end of the opening, and a lower section 3, which abuts at its upper end with the lower end of the-upper section 3, and extends to the lowest point to which the window glass 5 is moved when it is lowered to itsfullest extent.
The felt lining strip 4 is extended continuously from the upper end of the upper section to the lower end of the lower section, so
glass sheet, the molding strips 2 are remove permitting the upper sections 3* to be swung out at theirupper ends from the position in which they were held thereby, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 5,-
the felt strip 4 acting as a flexible, conn'ecsuch movement so that, when the glass is to be inserted, its lower edge portions at each side will be passed into the upper ends of the upper "sections and slid down therein, to the lower end thereof, then the glass, with the guides thereon may be swung into positionjin the opening, so that the upperv sections' will be carried into alignment with the lower sections and into the osition in which they may be secured by t e moldin In this position the glass may then be sli down into the lower sections and,-as the lining of the sections is continuous, there will be no tendency to cause obstruction of the glass,
tion between the sections, and permitting by the engagement of its lower-"edge with the felt at the upper end of the. lower sec tions, so as to dislodge it and ress it down in a manner to fill or partly. 11 the groove in which the glass is arranged to slide.
I claim: a
In a casing having a window opening, and
a vertically slidable window lass sheet, for
closing said opening, 'adapte to belowered. to open the same, a palrof vertically dis-' posed guides for the side edge portions of the sheet, each uide comprising two normally aligned cfiannel metal str1p sections arranged with their adjacent ends in abutment with the lower section terminating at its upper end adjacent the bottom of the opening and a flexible cushioning lining secured within said strip sections and extending continuously from one section to the other to provide guiding surfaces between said sections, said lining being adapted to permit the upper section to be swung out of line with the lower section so that the sheet may be inserted at the upper end thereof.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
' EDWIN W. M. BAILEY.
