Description

W. J. GOURIE KNITTING DEVICE Filed Sept. 15, 1926 FIG: 1 I
WITNES srs INVENTOR W iTTbRNEY.
Patented July" 12, 1927.
H .wIrmIAM J. count-n,"or rnrnannnrnm;rnnnsvnvanral i m'r'rinepnvronl j Yw Application filed September 1952b. No, i3 5,53 5. i
My invention relates to knitting devices and more particularly tohand knitting de- VICGSfiClaPtGC l to knit fabricsin strands.
Knitting-fabrics in strands by means of pegs driven in the end of a spool-shaped structure is well. known but has the disadvantage that any one'device will produce but one size and shape of strand. Further the flange on the upper side of the device, in
which the pegs are placed, interferes with y the ready. manipulation of the strand of yarn.
One of the objects of my invention is'to' produce a device on which strands of various 'sizesmay be knitted and which'has no parts tending to interfere with the easy operation of the device.
Another; object of my invention is to pro-v duce a device whereby loosely knitted or tightly knitted strands may be produced at the will of the operator. i
A further object of my invention is to produce a device on which different kinds and various sizes of material may be knitted.
These objects and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the, following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in 1 which outer end 8 extending at right angles to but 7 V-shaped body portion, loops formed below Figure 1 shows a preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 illustrates the first step of a knitting operation, Q
Figure 3 the second step, Figure 4 the third step, and Figure 5 shows a partially knitted strand of fabric. Referring now more particularly to Figure 1, the preferred form of my invention consists of a single piece of wire bent near its center, as indicated at 6, into V-shape 'with the central portion of each leg of the V bent into a loop or ring 7 and with the outside of the body portion 9 of the V.
Referring now to Figures 2, 3,4 and 5;
a strand of yarn 10 is first looped around the ends 8 in the shape of a figure 8 and then carried across the parallel faces of the ends above the body portion, as shown 'in Figure 2. One of the loops ofthe figure 8 [is slipped up'over the end of thepart Sand then pulled downwarduntilit rests on the adjacent strand, as shown at'll in Figure 3. The yarn 10 is then given one-half turn around both parts 8 and the opposite loop of the figure 8 is slippedover the end the part 8 and then pulled downward against the adjacent strand, as shown at'12 in Figure 4:. The process is; thus continued by alternately slipping the lower strand of yarn Over the endof the part 8 so, that-theloop thus formed rests on top' of the strand 10 a'ndgiving the strand, 10a half turn about 1 tion will; depend between the rings 7 as" 1 shown by the knitted strand 13 in Figure 5.
the parts 8' of. the device The knitted por- By spreading the ends 8 farther apart,-
strands of greater cross-sectional areabut-a loosely knitted may be produced and, by
bringing the ends 8 closer together, more Y tightly knitted strands-of lesser cross-sectional area' will be produced. Where larger knitted strands are desired, heaviermaterial or a plurality-of yarns maybe used. :The. device is also adapted for'knitting strips,
The 5 bra-ids, carpet-rags, "etc, 'into strands.
strands thus knitted may be disposed side, by
side in any preferred form'andTtheadjacent strands stitched together to form' table mats,
floor rugs, etc. The device'isbetter adapted to'the amusement of children than any of the older types of devices of this kind.
While a device of any particular size will produce awide range of sizes of knitted strands, the device may be made in various sizes.
While I have described my invention as 7 taking a particular form, it will be understood that various changes may bemade therein without departing from the spirit within the'scope of the, appended claims.
of the invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, 'but consider that I am'at liberty to make such changesand alterations. as fairly come Y Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A hand knitting device having an open and integral with the body portion, and yarn I engaging pins extending upwardly from and integral with the said loops r 2. A hand knitting device formed from wire and having a V-shaped body portion,
loops formed in each leg of the V,'and the. ends of the wire extending from the loops at right angles to the body portion and adapted-to be bent inwardly and outwardly for producing smaller or larger strands.
3. A hand knitting device having an open.
7 V-shapedbody portion, each end of theyshaped portion having an extension adapted to engage the material to be knitted and projecting at nightengles to the PlilIlQrOif the 5 V-shaped portion.
,4. A hand knit-ting device having .a bodyportion and extending yarn engaging pins in a plane at an angle to that of the body portion, said pins being -ad-apted'- to be adjust-ably positioned to vary the space therebetween. In testimony whereof I have signed my name :to this specification.
