Since the arms 37, 38 and 39 occupy a fixed position in'relation to the cylinder 18, it is apparent that the various numbering heads must be positioned upon said cylinder with relation. to said arms so as' to cause the actuation of the digit wheels only after the completion of the printing interval, and be- ;fore the succeeding inking interval.
The variousarms 37, 38 and 39 extend along the sanieradiu's of'the cylinder 18, which ensures simultaneous"actuation of the gears 34,
'35 and.36,when the progressive actuation of theymachine'requires it. This is not absolutely essential, but contributes toward simplicity in the design offthe machine.
It is to .benoted that no springsof any kind. are required in the .machine or in the numbering heads actuated thereby, and that 'all'of the movements in the machine are posimtivemovements excepting the restoration of the bars .53 and 54 andthe actuating mechanism therefor to normal, gravity'being relied upon toensure the desired return movement of said parts after each actuation thereof. 'The weight of the parts will be sufficient to ensure this gravity return movement thereof, but in a machine of the dimensions as large as those of the machine of this application, the space is ample to permit-the use of largestrong'springs 1f desired, W1thout introducing into thev machine those factors of uncertainty arising from the presence of 'many small springs in the numbering heads themselves. I
If it be desired to stop the making of impressions by the machine, it is merely necessary to press the pedal 95. The result of pressing this pedal will be the simultaneous movement ofthe impression cylinder out of the printing relation to the numbering heads 22 upon the cylinder 18; of the arm 99 by the link 98, sufficient to move the memher 78 out of engaging relation to the cam 79; and downward movement of the frame 63 as a result of the oscillation of the lever '101 by the link 100, sufficient to move all of the bars 52, 5-3 and54 out of the'operative relation with the mechanisms, A, B and-C.
The slight lost motion of the dog 76 and the ratchet wheel, 71, as indicated more par.- ticularly in Fig. 8, is for the purpose of permitting that relative movement of the frame 63 and the crank arm 74 upon the actuation of the throwoff mechanism.
Since the ,throwoff "mechanism is. actuated by the 'pressmen only immediately following the completion of an impression, oryimm-ediately preceding'the making of. an im-.
.pres'sion, it is apparent that the various digit wheels Will all be automatically set for the succeeding impression at;the time of the actuation of this mechanism, and that there-' after, all of the parts in the machine will remainin exactly the same relation until the throwoff mechanism is again actuated to place-the machine inoperation. It is apparent that in a machine embodying my invention, there may be various changes in design, while still securing the, same operative effect, it being possible to dispense with some of the mechanisms in the machine such as the pawl80 and the particular construction ;of pawls: 83 and 84, which are:uscdmerely'to ensure against any possible variation in the movements of other mechanisms in the machine, the possibility of such variation being very remote without these particular mechanisms; Also the form of the cam 79 maybe varied from that shown, in order to;control the timing of the opera tive'interval of the disks 60'and 61.
Throughout the specification, I have used the term actuating mechanismsiLB and C to designate those mechanisms carried by and rotatable with the numbering head cyl-.-
inder, which in their function act directly upon the gears 34, 35 and 36. I have used the term controlling mechanism as designating the bars52, 53 and 54,.and their appurtenances, which act upon said mechanisms A, B and C for detern'iining their operative interval, and have. used the term, actuating mechanism for the controlling iZU mechanism todesignate those parts of the' machine actuate-d from .the printing couple for imparting the necessary movement to the bars 52, 53 and 54.
