rosrr STRUCTURE FOR voron nnvrcnsi 1 Application filed. December 30, 1922. Serial no, 609,929. I
' This invention relates to a "sounding device for dolls and other toys, and particularly to a standard or post structure employed in such devices. The post of the present invention being in the nature of an imp'rovement upon what is shown and described in my pending application Serial No. 57 0,209 filed June 22nd, 1922, sounding device, for dolls and toys. g p
The object of the present invention is to provide a post upon which the bellows head may slide, adapted for accomplishing the same purposes as set forth in the said co' namely of guldmg' and pending application, supporting the bellows head, and of controlling the passage of air through the sounding device, and said post being also constructed to provide a continuous unbroken wear surface along which the bellows head may slide. A further object is to provide a post which I is cheaper to manufacture and lighter -in "weightthan the post'heretofore used.
Other objects and aims ofthejinvention, more or less specific than those referredcto pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles, constituting, the invention, and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawingslwhich are tobe taken as a part of this specification, and in which'l have shown merely a preferred form of embodiment of the invention:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view, partly diagrammat-ic illustrating the post of this invention, and its associated parts. 4o

Figure 3 is a perspe Figure 2, illustrating a modified arrangement with openings in the post.
reference character L indicates the cylindrical housing closed at its upper and lower ends by cover parts 1 and 2, and containing head l'is a central opening 5, by means of which it is slidably mounted upon the TP StG- 7 J1 the bellows "metal tubing [n I At an appropr ate point in its length'iit is i tion 'betwe'enoppo above, willbe in part obvious and in part Figure 2 is a perspective view of the post tive view similar to Referring to the drawings, for'describing' in detail the structure therein illustrated, the
the bellows 3, being amovable head l; The
ment H, in substantially the same relation as described in 1s the inner end o-pen'ding application, that of sai-delement extends into while the; outer end. opens into a sound boX 6, formed as a part of the head,
- the passage of air through the'soundproducing element, and'throughthe sound box be- The head 4,"casesthe soundproducing-ele 1 ing controlled by features of thepostasthe head slides along the post..
.The postof the present invention is made i from a length of suitable tubing, preferably fitted with a disk' 7, which closes communica- I site enfd portions offthe in tenor of the tube."
, Above the disk7, thewallsiof the tube are formed with openings 8, cut". thereif through, and belowthe disk the walls of the tube are formed with similar openings 9. These openings extendlongitudinally of the tube and may be of "any; appropriate lengths as may be found desirable-or: neces sary for producing certain sounds as will" be readily understood with this art. In the instance illustrated, in which the; device is intended to producethe sound'Ma Ma, the
' Openings 8, are relatively shorter than the open ngs 9.
The opposite ends of the tube areopen,
but when the tube is, in aperture posltio-n- -,w1th1n ithe casingL, said ends are closed by;
being received in retaining pockets' lO of" i .the covers 1 and .2, said retaining; pockets notonly operating to close the endsof thetube but also to retain tube infa rigid up right position within the casing: p v v 11" of the tube, interme- The portions as diateopenings 8, and the po'rtions as '12, in'
termediate openings 9, serveito' provide continuous and unbroken "wear surfaceslongitudinally of. the tube along which the head. 4 may slide without any likelihood retarded by engagement of the-projecting .portions of the post as isthe case in'said copendirfg application; The, necessity for an extended sleeve, as in said 'co pending ap- Pliation, y;' r a dw With. ;3 It is :intendedthat the o ni g, which continues through the wall 1ft of the head, shall be' suiiiciently large so as to provide a passage, as 13 through'which air maiy'l pass f bei the casing is shown .to .be
from the sound box ina quantity sufiicient to permit movement of the head freely past unap'ertured portions'of the post.
The operationof the device may now be,
5 readily understood: .VVhen the device is upset,-then thehead t, moves by gravity along the post to bringthe outerwvall 14 of the sound boX beyond the ends of the aperture 8. Then, as the device "has returned toits l upright position, the force of gravity immediately moves the head downwardly, meanwhile pressing .out .air from thebellows throughthesounding device and the sound gbex, and throughthe passage 13.. Initially the sound.produced by'the reedescapes in restricted volume througlrthis passage 13 to simulate the. sound. ofthe letter M.. While ,the Wall l his moving past the apertures 8, then the sound from the chamber 6 news freely through apertures 8 into. and out of the interior of the fpost an'd thusproduces a simulation of the soundIof thevletter A w .yvhichconti'nues until the all 14 passes be 7 yon d the aperture 8, and encounters the un- 2 aperturedportion 15 o f-thepost-in the re .gion of the .diskwvhere the "volume of sound emitted is again .restricted. As the wall 14 continues to moveqalong the post it uncovers theiaperturesQ .andthe fIQe'fiOW 3Q 'ofsound intoand out ofithe post is again established and the simulation of the sound 10f the letter fA is repeated. my I fI t Will be understood-that placing additional separate disks, as,7, .spaced apart 1LlOIlg l1ll6 length ofthetube, and providing 7 apertures through the tube communicating with .the space'betweensaid disks, then the sounding of the sound producing devicemay be repeated as oftenas desired. 7

In the instance illustrated the cover 1 of Q Y passage of sound outwardlyfrom Within the ,aperture-flfifor'thiswpurpose.
In the modification, Figure 3, the post is identical .With the post already described, ekceptthat its apertures 8 and -9 are ar- ;ranged't0 eXtend longitudinally at mangle 'r 'elativetothelongitudinal axis of the tubev A post constructed .in
