This invention relates to supply doors for wash wheels, or washing machines, of the type comprising apair of coaxial hor1zontal cylinders of which the outer cylinder 18 stationary and the inner one is movable in relation thereto and adapted to contain the articles being washed.
It is a general'object of the present invention to provide a novel and improved supply door for wash wheels.
More particularly it is an ob ect of the present invention to provide a supply door for wash wheels which is self-washing on its inner face and which prevents the deposition of washing material upon the lower edge of the main door opening.
Another object of the present inventlon consists in the provision of a supply door or shutter adapted to close an opening 1n the main door of the outer drum of awash wheel, said shutter having a hinged connec-.
tion with the door, which hinged connec tion is contained within the space enclosed by the outer drum,
Still another object of the present inven tion consists in the provision of a device adapted to be mounted upon the main door of the wash wheel and to support by a hinged connection a supply door, said device also serving as a stop to limit the movement of the main door in closing direction and to re-enforce the edge of the maindoor adjacent the supply door opening. Other and further objects of the invention will become more apparent to those skilled in the art by reference to the accompanying drawing and following specification, wherein is disclosed a single exemplary Structure, with the understanding, however,
that various changes and modifications may be made therein, such as in the size, shape, proportions, arrangement, and material of the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.

copending application, Serial No. 17,748, filed March 23, 1925, I have disclosed a supply door for wash wheels which is adapted to close an opening in the main or charging door of the outer drum or cylinder.
'Ihissupply door is of the self-washing type and is adapted to cooperate with handle bar, used for opening and closing the main door, in order to retain the supply door in its open position. In this earlier application, the supply door was pivoted, intermediate its circumferential height, by pivots outside of the main door. In the present form, however, the supply door is hinged to the main door at the lower edge of the supply door and this hinged connection is arranged a' material distance inside of the main door, in fact, such a distance that'the hinge is radially closer to the axis of the drum than is the inner surface of the drum.
This construction permits substantially the entire supply door to be within the outer circumference of the drum and within the main door, so that it is more readily subjected to spray from the revolving inner drum. Thus any of the washing materials clinging to its surface will be washed off before it is necessary to again use the supply door for the purpose of inserting'other materials which might be neutralized by the action of any of the earlier material sticking to the door. By having the lower edge of the supply door prO ecting over and inwardly of the bottom ing means such as feet 12 serve to maintain the drum in a horizontal position. The inner cylinder or drum 13 is mounted for rotation or oscillation in any desirable manner, not shown, and is composed of any suitable material perforated to allow for the flow of the washing fluid. The drums are spaced apart .a suitable distance, and access is gained to the inner drum, wherein the material ,to be washed is placed, by means of an opening, not shown, passing through it, which opening is closed by any satisfactory type of door, not shown. ll corresponding opening 14: is provided in the outer drum so that when the two openings are lined up, access may be had to the interior of the inner drum. This opening 14- is adapted to be covered by a main or large door. 15, which is usually made of sheet metal and slides circumferentially over the surface of the drum between the guides 16 and 17 under the bands 11. The opening 14 is usually above the horizontal center of the outer drum, and the edges of the opening are preferably reenforced by metal strips such as 18, which may be secured in any desired maniier to the shrpud which protects the outer surface ofthe drum.
The main door it is provided with a rectangular supply opening, such as 20 through which may be introduced such materials as soap, washing powder, bluing, etc., without the necessity of opening the larger door or stopping the rotation of the inner drum. This opening is preferably of considerable length and may be almost as long as the main door, but its circumferential width or height relatively small in order that the hand of the operator may not be introduced therethrough and possibly be injured.
The main door being formed of sheet metal, the material thereof is weakened by the provision of the opening 20, and there fore the upper edge of the door is re-enforced by a longitudinal bar or strip 21 of suitable material securely fastened thereto by riveting or otherwise. The lower edge of the opening 20 is reenforced by the angle bar 22 having the flange 28 which is riveted or welded to the inner surface of the main door and the flange 24L which projects in,- wardly so as to overhang the inner edge 25 of the re-enforcing strip 18, as shown in Figure 2. This angle bar 22 not only reenforces the main door, but provides stop for it, limiting its downward movement by the engagen'ient of the flanges 23 and 24 with the re-enforcing strip 18. The flange 24 also serves to support one of the wings of the hinge 26, which is preferably of the type commonly known as a piano hin e. This hinge supports the lower edge the supply door or shutter 2.7 which is adapted to close the opening 2t)v to prevent splashing out of. the liquid contained in the drum 15, This door orshutter is formed of sheet metal asshown, and reaches from the hinge 26 c umlferentially around the drum, so that'itsupper edge 27 engages the outer surface of the main door justunder. the re-eiiforeing bar. 21 wh ,e it maybe. hQ-lcl by suitable form of catch $1191 18 287.

in Figure 2, the shutter 27 rests upon the top surface of the flange 24 of the angle bar 22, as shown in dotted lines, and its upper edge 27 rests against the handle bar 28 which is provided with the rabbet 29 to receive it. This handle bar serves not only as a stop to limit the outward movement of the supply door, but as a handle for the manipula-, tion of the main door, and for this purpose it is made with its under side of channel form to increase its rigidity.
The handle bar is supported from a, pair of sector-shaped side plates 30 formed integral with the bases 3l, which are rigidly secured by riveting or any other suitable manner to the outer surface of the maindoor adjacent the edges of the supply opening, and serve not only as supports for the handle bar, but as re-enforcements for the sides of the supply opening. These sector-shaped side plates extend within the opening a sufficient distance so as to close the space between the edges of the door 27 andthe opening 20,, so that there can he no leakage of liquid around the door. Each of the sectorshaped side plates 30 is provided with an inwardly projecting flange 32 upon which the door rests when open, thus forming a lap j oint so that the door together with the side plates forms in effect a hopper having lap joints at its corners through which washing material can be poured into the drum. A suitable knob or handle 33 may be provided on the door 27 to facilitate its operation.
The above construction provides a supply door in which the lower edge projects over the inside edge of the door opening at 25, so as to prevent supplies from being spilled on this lower edge and also causing any spray which strikes the inside of the supply door, and serves to wash it, to drain back into the interior of the drum rather than leak out at the lower edge of the main door, which it would do if this protection were not provided. The supply door, when closed, has a tight lit along its upper edge with the outer surface of the main door, and its ends fit snugly between the side plates 30. at all times, thus effecting a substantially watertight closure. l/Vhen open, a convenient supply hopper is provided closed on three sides and having the fourth side opening into the drum. The handle bar' co- (ll c fates wltll the upper edge of the supply door to limit its outward movement, and by this support prevents any possibility of bending the supply door so that it would not form a tight closure, thus enabling it to be made of a thinner material and effecting a reduction in its cost.

In a Wash wheel, in combination, a relativcly thick, horizontal, outer drum having an opening above the horizontal center thereof, a relatively thin main door slidable circumferentially on the outside of said drum to close said opening and having a supply opening therein, a supply door adapted to close said opening, a reinforcing strip secured to the inner face of the main door, and extending in beyond the plane of the inner wall of said cylinder, and a hinge joining the inner edge of said strip and the supply door.

In a wash wheel, in combination, a relatively thick, horizontal, outer drum having an opening above the horizontal center thereof, a relatively thin main door slidable circumferentially on the outside of said drum to close said opening and having a supply opening therein, a supply door adapted to close saidopening, a stop member on the inside of the lower edge of said main door to engage the lower edge of the opening and means pivoting said supply door to said stop member.

In a wash wheel, in combination, a relatively thick, horizontal, outer drum having an opening above the horizontal center thereof, a relatively thin main door slidable circumferentially on the outside of said drum' to close said opening and having a supply opening therein, supply door adapted to close said opening, a stop member projecting inwardly from the lower edge of the supply opening and serving to engage with and cover the lower edge of the main door opening, and a hinge joining the inner edge of said stop to the lower edo'e of said supply door.

In a wash wheel, in combination, a horizontal drum having an opening therein, a door slidable circumferentially to cover said opening and having a supply opening therein, a handle bar extending transversely of said door, a reinforcing member inside the lower edge of said door and a shutter adapted to close said supply opening, said shutter passing through said opening, and a hinge oining said shutter to said reinforc ing member, said handle bar forming a stop to limit the opening of said shutter.

In a wash wheel, in combination, a horizontal drum having an opening therein, a door slidable 'circnmferentially to close said opening and having near its lower edge a supply opening, a reinforcing strip inside the lower edge of said supply opening and adapted to overhang the edge of the main opening, side plates secured to the edge of said supply opening and normal to the surface of said door, a handle bar joining said plates above the surface of said door and a shutter hinged at its lower edge to said reinforcing strip, fitting between said side plates and resting on said handle bar when open to thus form a supply hopper.

In a wash wheel, in combination, a horizontal outer cylinder having a filling opening therein, a main door slidable circumferentially to close said opening and having a supply opening therein, an angle bar extending the length of said supply opening, one flange of said bar being secured to the inner side of said main door below said supply opening, the other flange projeeting inwardly and over the lower edge of said filling opening, and a shutter having its 7 lower edge pivoted to the inwardly projecting flange of said reinforcing bar and adapted to close said opening.
9. In a wash wheel, in combinatlon, a horizontal outer cylinder having a filling openlng therein, a main door slidable circuinferentially to close said opening and having a supply opening therein, an angle bar extending the lengthof said supply opening, one flange of said bar being secured to the inner side of said main door below said supply opening, the other flange projecting inwardly and over the lower edge of said filling opening, vertical sectors at the ends of said supply opening abutting the ends of said shutter, and flanges on said sectors receiving said shutter when open.
10. In a wash wheel, in combination, an outer horizontal cylinder having an opening above the horizontal center thereof, a main door slidable circumferentially over said cylinder to close said opening and having a. supply opening therein, a shutter fitting through said opening and hinged to said main door, said hinged connection being inside of the inner wall of the cylinder, said shutter having its upper edge overlapping the outside of'the main door when closed.
