UNITED a STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SPRAYER.
Application filed January 30, 1926.. Serial No. 84,984.
This invention relates to sprayers and more particularly to an apparatus of this character which is in the nature of an atomizer, and which is designed to spray insecticides or other materials in powdered form, and it is to be distinctly understood that I use this term material to include any liquid or powder which might be employed for the purpose.
An object of the invention is to so arrange the fluid supply pipe as to form a trap in which a supply of fluid will be maintained in position for discharge when the air is forced over the outlet end of the tube and overcome the necessity of drawing the fluid from the tube at each reciprocation of a piston or plunger.
Atomizers of this character heretofore in use employ a fluid supply tube which is vertically disposed or has a straight communication with the outlet end of the air tube so that when the plunger is drawn backwardly the fluid will fall from the tube back to its container and must be drawn outwardly through the tube at each power stroke of the plunger. In other words, a certain amount of suction or partial vacuum is utilized, first to lift the liquid to the point of discharge so that a large portion of the power or air discharged is wasted before any spraying actually takes place.
It is therefore the primary object of my invention to overcome this loss of power and ensure a more continuous spray than is possible with apparatus heretofore known.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
The accompanying drawing is a View in longitudinal section illustrating my improved sprayer.
1 represents a pump cylinder having a cupped piston or plunger 2 therein secured to a rod 3 which projects through one end 4 of the cylinder 1 and has a handle 5 thereon. An air discharge pipe 6 communicates with one end of the cylinder 1, and this tube has an appreciable length, or, in other words, it
is as long as may be desired to give the best results and to ensure a suflicient length of directed air so as to form a nozzle and allow the spray to be directed as may be desired,
which is secured to cylinder 1 in any approved manner, and has a removable cap 8 normally closing the entrance to the tank or reservoir. 9 represents an outlet tube or pipe which at one end is located within the reservoir 7 and terminates at a point slightly removed from the bottom of saidreservoir. This tube 9 extends through the wall of the reservoir and preferably through the top of said reservoir Where it is bent in a general compound curve, as indicated at 10, and extends forwardly in an approximatel straight portion 11, then sharply upwar and has a vertically positioned outlet end 12 over which the air from tube 6 is dis-- charged.
With a construction such as above described, after the plunger has been recip rocated, the fluid will .be drawn up through the tube 9 and sprayed. On the rearward stroke of the piston or plunger 2 a certain amount of fluid will be entrapped and held in the tube 11 from its outlet end 12 to the highest point of the compound curve 10, so that immediately upon the forward stroke of the piston or plunger the discharge or spray of fluid will begin and there will be no loss of power or time due to sucking the fluid from the tank, such as is customary with devices in general use.
\Vhile I hawe illustrated what I believe to be a preferred embodiment of my invention it is obvious that various slight changes and alterations might be made in the general form of the parts described without departing from the invention and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A portable sprayer, including a c lindrical air pump, an air discharge tu e projecting longitudinally from the end of the pump, a reservoir secured to the pump beneath the same, an outlet pipe communicating with the interior of the reservoir, said pipe extending upwardly from the reservoir to a point adjacent the tube, then extending; downwardly and forwardly, and
then upwardly to a point adjacent the eX- treniity of the air tube whereby a portion of the material is trapped between the firstlneutioned bend of the pipe and the outlet end thereof.
