- Ourinvention relatesto electrical protective devices and particularly to reactors for y transformers and other electrical devices,
- One object of rour invention isto 'provide v45 a reactor of thethroughconductor type. l
Another object of our-`inventi`on is to Lprowindin f- Anotliser ob'ect of our invention is to prolo vide' a simpli ed form of reactance thatmay beeasily'*r adjusted to suit a widerange of requirements.
y AIt is also an object of ourinv'ention to provide 'a simple andv easily adjusted*r reactor 15 that maybe usedv in conjunction with a transformer for increasngthe reactance'of the transformer circuit. v i
A further object of our invention is' to rovide means for accomplishing theparal-v ,A 20 elA operationv of two or moretransformers whose impedances are dissimilarwithout the necessity windings.`
" In the accompanying drawings,`
` Fi re 1 is a'face view of areactorembodymg our invention. y y
' Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof. ,c jFig. 3 is ar diagrammatic view of circuits and apparatus` showing our reactor applied to a bank oftransformers of unequal vimpedances. e j Fig. ris a view'showin parallelfconuected transformers that are ba anced by means of our'reactors. Referringparticularly to Figs. land 2`, our invention comprises, in general, a. reactor or balancing coilthat is made up of a lurality of stamped laminations 1 clamped )etween end frames 2 by" bolts 3 permitting an 'increase or decreasein the number of laminations 1 and havin a straight .bushing j 4 extending longitudina y into the central kportions of the laminations and end frames. The bushing 4 is preferably'formed with either one or two openings 5, although any desired number of o nl may beemployed as the'opening for t e bus ing- '4 throughv the end frames 2 and the laminations 1 may be of any desired size. The laminations 1 may 50 be rovided. with one or more air aps 6,
if esired, one onlykb'eingshown. y e disposition of the air-gaps 6 has atgrononnced e'ect u n the noisiness of e reactor. `When e'structure is-employed as a reof any change inthe transformer actor, thefair ga 6 is m'adeuse of, but when employedfas 'a alancingcoil, it is preferable to omit theuse ofan air gap. yThe reactor is energized by the" electrical conductor orconductors extending through the c 'opening 4or .openingsin -thebushing 4.
y vide-a reactor that shall be free tfrom coil n i f "of the transformers? andSare connectedfm kparallel circuit/and their secondary windings 9 and 11" are similarly connected in parallel rcircuit andare provided, at their ends, with Referring toy Fig; 3, the lprimary `windinfrs double leads 12. The transformer Thais a ylower impedance than the transformer' 8` and, accordingly,a reactor is'placed about the leads of thev transformer 7 in order to etiectively increase the impedance of that transformenvas compared-to the impedance 'of transformer 8, and thereby equalize the current supplied by the two transformers.-
f Referring to Fig. 4, we have'shown the reactor employed asa balancing v"coil to equalize the current* delivered by parallelvconnected secondary windings 13 and 14 of transformer bank. `Inthis application ofv our invention, one of the conductors from the winding 14 is'threaded through an opening 5 so that the currentfwill traverse the reactor in one direction and a conductor from the winding-"13 passes through another opening 5 in the reactor soy that its current" will traverse the reactor in a direction opposite tothat of the winding r14. `f The two conductors lare then lccmnected at a point exteriorly of y the reactor. f 'Under' normal loperating condition of a balanced load between the'windings 13 and l14, the' impedance offered by the reactor to the currents from both windings is the same. However, should either of the windings 13 or 14 tend to deliver more current than the other winding,-
vtheV impedanceof the` reactor to that current increases, thereb causing that current to' decrease and,'at e samel time, causing the other windlng to increase the current delivered by it. In this construction, the currents` de ivered by thewindings `13 and 14 magnetically inuence 'each other through 'the reactor to maintain equalvalues.'vr In other words, the reactor acts as an equalizer.
It will seeny that we have devised 'a simple and easily adjusted reactor whose reactance may be increased-ordecreasedto suit the requirements of the apparatus with which it is used.
