ELECTRICAL COIL.
Application led February 20, 1918. Serial IO. 212,279.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, SAMUnL l. Amin, a citizen of United States, residing at New York, in the `county of lNew York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical Coils, ot which the following is a. full, clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention -relates to electrical coils, and more Iparticularly to such coils used in connection with radio communication for tuning and similar purposes. The object ot the invention is to provide a. coil in which the distributed Vcapacity is reduced to a.
minimum.
In continuous la'yer windings there is a distributed capacity Aeffect withinl the winding itself due to the difference inv potential between turns, this capacity eilect being' inversely proportional to the spacing between the turns. In many electrical circuits, particularly those in the -ield ot wireless telegraphy and wireless telephony, there is a demand for coils in which the udistributed capacity is eliminated or greatly reduced, for example, a coil-with such characteristics is particularly desirable as a tuning` coil, since it permits much `sharper tuning than is otherwise obtainable.
In order to obtain a coil havinga low distributed cap'acity 'and at the same time one which is not prohibitive in size or ditlicult to wind commercially, the present invention ber 1, which is preferabl;v ot
lodd number ot guide pins or spind provides a windingin which the adjacent turns do not lie next to one another but cross one another at a rather blunt angle irequent intervals around the circumference ot the Winding.
This construction will. be more clearly understood by reference to the accompanying drawing which shows in perspective au inductance'coil wound in the proposed Referring to this drawing. the b insulating materlah'is prov are also of wood or simiiar ma spindleaiwhich are numl elusive, are set perpendi itself. insulated c? it v7hich is secured a perora specification qftettersraam. i Patented Mar, 14, 1932,
at the terminal.\ rIhis conductor is then carried directly to spindle 4, thence to the alternate spindles 6, 8, 10 and 12 in order.
From spindle 12, the conductor is carried to spindle 3 and the second turn is made by winding about spindles 3, 5, 7 9, 11 and 2. Thus, after two complete turns, the conductor is again brought tospindle 2 and the balance of the winding may beplaced in the same manner. After completing the last turn, the conductor is given a complete turn around spindle 3 to aid in holding the winding in place and itis then led throughl thevpertoration 16 in base 1 and securely fastened to terminal 17 After the Winding is completed it is preferably given a coat ot shellac at the spindles to prevent shitting of' the turns.
lVith the construction as described and shown on the drawing, -it will be noted that adjacent turns come in contact` with each other only at the points where they cross between spindles, as at the points 1S1S. At all other points they Yare separated rfrom each other by a distance which reaches a maximum at the spindles. As a result ot this increased separation between turns. the distributed capacity of the coil is reduced a considerable amount. lllolreoverhthis reduction in capacity is accomplished `without ap- 'preciably affecting the size of the coil or without distributing the iux leakage and thereby decreasing the inductanceot a cori having? given number of turns.
wWhat is claimed is:
1. 'in electrical coil comprising' a plurality oiY symmetrical polygon turns adjacent turns having their dihedral angles angularly displaced wl li respect to each other.
'Ln electrical coil comprising a plurality of; syn'nnetrical polygon turns. adjan cent turns having their dihedral angles an- ,frulari displaced with respect to each other. and alternate turns having" their dihedral angles in alignment..
3.1% n electrical coil comprising' a base member having a plurality ot spindles mounted thereon. said spindles being; o'li'an odd number, and` a conductor wound upcviz, said spindles, adjacent turns ot said wind- ,if angrularly displaced 'with respect other and alter wie turns being in ent with each other with respect to member having an odd number of spindles mounted thereon and perpendicular liereto, and :1 Windinghaving a plu ziliy of turns, each of said turns being Wound upon elernzie spindles.
5. ln electrinl coil comprising n base member having an odd number of spindles mounted thereon and perpendicular thereto, und d continuous Winding wound successively on alternate spindles.
ln witness ,Vliereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 14th day of February A. D., 1918.
