Description

July 5 1927' A G, w. BURKE, JR
FIRE EXTINGUISHER Filed Oct. '7. 1922 Patented July 5, 927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. BRKE, JR., F DAYTON, OHIO.
FIRE EXTIN'G'UISHER.
Application -led October 7, 1922'. Serial No. 593,034.
The object of this invention is to provide a lire extinguisher of the type disclosed inl the end of the extinguisher, 'of a pressureA gauge so that the same is shielded by the end of the extinguisher itself, from any blows which it might bel subjected to.
Further objects are to provide suitable bearings for the swivel valve within the extinguisher, to provide a means for conducting the lire extinguishing fluid from the swivel valve to a side discharge opening, and to provide a new andv improved valve closures for the ends/of the valve tube.
Other objects and advantages will be more fully set forth in the attached specication and claims.
In lthe drawings: y Figure 1 is a part sectional side elevation of the fire extinguisher. Figure 2 is an endview of the same.
- Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 -of Figure 1 on an enlarged scale. j
The fire extinguisher is provided with a main fluid container 1, having at one end a valve 2 throu h which the fire extinguishing liquid is supp ied to the container. A hand-- grip 3, trigger mechanism 4 and discharge valve are attached to the side of the container, .so as tgapermit the device to be grasped, aimed, and operated by a single hand of the operator. One end of the container is closed by an end cap 6 which is adapted to be pressed inside of the end of the container shell. End cap 6 supports a bush- 404 ing 7 within which is screwed the valve 8 of f a pressure gauge 9'. The pressure gaugeis protected by the cap and the end walls Yor' the container from any shocks 4which it would otherwise be subjected to.
The bushing 7y has projecting arms 1() which support a bearing member 11 lprovidi' ed with adjusting screw \12.' At the oppo-` site endy of the container land at the side thereof is .a ,discharge opening 13, within -.which is suitably brazed /or welded a T "shaped casting 14, one side of the T head extending out through the end of the container and supporting the valve 2,while'the yother side of the T head rotatably supports a casting 15 which is rigidly connected to a longitudinally extending tube 16 near one end ofthe same. Seventeen (17) is a hollow supporting` tube which is rotatable, mounted at one end in the bearing 11 and `at the other end is /rigidly mounted in the casting 15, as shown. Tube 16 is connected at one end to the supporting tube 17 by a strap 18 and is connected at the center by a second strap 19. Wei hts 20, 20 may be supplied to the tube 16, i desired, to always keep the tube at the lowest position within the casing.
,Each end of the tube 16 is adapted to be closedby a valve closure 21 which preferably has a semispherical face 22 and rearward extensions 23. These extensions are guided by projectingl fingers 24 on the tube 16, and the two valve closures are connected by a rod 25 so that when one end of the tube is open the other end will 'be tightly closed.
After the fire extinguisher has been nearly filled with the l,extinguishing liquid through valve 2 the inside of the casing is put under the extinguisher 'should have only a verysmall amount of liquid therein and it is aimed upwardly, the weight ofthe valve closures 21 and rod 25 will cause the upper end of the tube 16 to be closed and the lower end open. If the extinguisher should now be turned upside down, the tube 16 will be acted upon by gravity and will at this time move around, due to its free suspension, so as to be opposite the handle and thus make it ossible to use practically all-of the liqui regardless of the position of the extinguisher.
Having thus set forth the preferred enibodiment of my invention, what I desire to secure and claim by Letters Patent is In a fire extinguisher, a cylindrical fluid container, a discharge opening near one end for mounting said tube on the pipe andend closure, e laterally extending plstol grip eX- tending from a side of the container near the 10 center thereof and a finger o erated valve adjacent thereto :for control lng the discharge of re extinguisher fluid.
