ADJUSTABLE STRIKER PLATE.
Application filed December 15, 1924. Serial NO. 756,141.
"This invention relates generally to striker plates and refers more particularly to those designed for use in connection with the movable bolts of vehicle door locks and latches.
One of the essential objects of the invention is to provide a plurality of striker plates that are preferably arranged in tan-.
dem and are adapted. to be alternately engaged by the bolt of the lock for holding" the door in either partially closed position or in fullyv closed position with respect to tion in which theadjustment of the striker plate transversely of the j amb is preferably controlled by means that is adjustable longitudinally of the jamb. i v
,Still another object, is to provideistrong and durable striker plates that are, simple in construction and can be manufactured at p j of the section 2 for taking up wear and prea comparatively low cost.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invent-ion consists in certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. I r
In the-accompanying drawing: 7 Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a .door jamb with the striker plates embodying ,myinvention attached thereto. V Figure 2is a cross sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure l.
Figure .3 is a fragmentary perspective view'of one of the sections of the door amb with the adjustable striker plate mounted plate.
plate.
strikerplaten Referring now to the drawing in" which like characters of reference designate cor responding" parts throughout the several Figure 15 is a detail view, of' the oblong? H flange 14 that is secured to Figure 6 isa detail view-of theadjustable and maybe any shape desired, however it is preferably formed 'of two sheet metal stampings 2 and 3 1'espectively. As shown, the stamping 2 is preferably"channel-shape in cross section and is provided at its fora ward edge with a laterally extending flange Al, whileithe stamping 3 is also preferably channel-shape in cross section and has one flange. 5 thereof overlapping the lateral flange-ilof the stamping 2. These. overlap-. ping flangesmay be secured together by any suitable means but are preferably welded together.
In order thata swinging door 6 may be held partially closed or fully closed with respect to the jambf 1, I preferably provide two striker plates 7 and 8 respectively that are preferablyv arranged .in tandem upon the door jainb .1 and are adapted to be engaged by the movable. bolt 9 of a lock carried by the door 6.
The striker plate 7' is preferably formed ofsheet metal and is preferably permanently secured to the jamb section 3,"while thestriker plate 8 is also preferably formed of sheet ,metal'and is adjustable transversely 5 of the jamb section 3. The striker plate 8 is also preferably wedge-shape in form and is movable longitudinally of an elon gated opening 11 that extends transversely of the jamb section 2 from the inner edge of the lateral flange t to a point adjacent to the rear flange l2. For supporting the plate 8 in the opening 11, I'have provided a retainer plate 13 that preferably 7 bridges the opening 11 and is permanently secured to the section 2. As shown, this retainer plate 18 is preferably riveted at its forward ,hicle body, the-retainer plate 13 is prefer ably provided with a relatively narrowtransversely extending slot 15 and a relativelv wide lon 'itudiiuill extending slot 16 As shown. the transversely extending slot is adapted to receive the shank of a suitable headed element such as a screw 17 which extends through a circular opening 18 in the central. depressed portion ll) of the inclined wall 20 of the striker plate 8. while the longitudinally extending slot 16 connects into the slot 15 and is adapted to receive a flat lug or extension 21 projectin from the rear wall 522 of the striker plate in order that the adjustment ot the striker plate 8 transversely oil. the amb 1 may be controlled by means movable longitudinally oi the jamb. I preferably provide an oblong plate that is preferably slidably mounted in spaced guide loops Bel struck out from the retainer late 13 and is preferably provided with a longitudinally extending slot 25 having a series oi' steps 26 at its forward side edge that are adapted to he alternateh engaged bv the lug 2i. tor adjusting the striker plate 3 transversely of the jamb. Thus. the
in the guide; i when it is desired to adjust the striker plate 8 rearwardlv, and may be adjusted downwardly in the guides Qt when it desired to adjust the striker plate 8 lorwardlv. In this connection. it will be noted that the plate 23 is preterablv provided at itsupper end with a suitable lug or projec' tion 2? that engageable with the upper edge oi the retainer plate 13 for limiting the downward sliding movement of the oblong plate.
For retaining the striker plate 3 in ad justed position. the'oblong plate 22-) is preterably provided with a series oi' threaded openings 9b that are pre'leralilv arranged in a line extending longitudinally oi the plate 523 so that they may alternately register with the transversely extending slot 1 in the retainer plate 13. when the oblong plate 2?) is adjusted These open-- ings :38 are also spaced a predetermined dis lance. apart and are arranged in such a way with respect to the steps 26 that when one of the openings 28 registers with the transversely extei'niling slot 15 in the retainer plate, the distance between one end wall 29 oi one of the steps and the upper end wall ill) of the slot 16 is substantially equal to the width ot the lug 21.. Thus. when the screw 17 is moved through the opening 1.8 in the inclined wall 20 oi the striker plate 5% and the transversely extending slot .15 in the retainer plate 13 and is engaged with one of the openings 98. the oblong plate 523 and striker plate 8 will be held in adjusted position.
i In use. the oblong plate 93 is adjusted when the striker plate 8 is removed to position the proper opening 528 in registration with the slot 15. whereupon the striker plate 8 applied to the retainer plate 13 so that the lug 21. engages the proper step 26, and the opening l8 in the inclined wall 20 oi the striker plate 8 registers with the transversely extending slot to, The serew 17 is then moved through the opening 18 and slot 15 and is engaged with the registering threaded opening 28. Thus, the striker plate 8 may be readily adjusted without interfering with the usual trimming material (not shown) of the vehicle body tor taking up wear and preventing the bolt 9 from rattling.
Inasmuch as the striker plates '7 and S are formed oi sheet metal, it is readily ap1.)arent that the cost ot inanutactnring such devices has been reduced to a minimum. Moreover the arrangement is such that the parts may be easily and quickly assembled or taken apart whenever desired.
llhile it believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages oi the invention will be readily apparent, I
desire to have it understood that I do not limit mvselt to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired. as fall within the s ope ot what is claimed.
