My invention relates to devices upon which the needle or stylus andthe soundbox or lreproducer of a talking machine is adapted to rest when inv inoperative position.

The object of the invention is to provide 'a device for supporting the reproducer and-its stylus when in' inoperative position, whereby the stylus will not be injured, which will not itself be injured by the stylus, vand which will not detract from the appearance of the talking machine.

A further object of the invention is to provide a structure, of the character herein described, which is extremely simple in construction, reliable and efficient-in its purpose, and inexpensive to manufacture.

I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention in the accompanying'V drawings in which like parts in all of the figures are designated by similar reference characters, and in which,- f Y 1 Fig. 1 is a plan View of a portion of a talking machine embodying my invention;

y A tone-arm 2 is carried on the motor board and is adapted to rotate Vin the plane of the boar-d. The tone-arm carries aV pivoted tubular `extension 3, to the outer' extremity of which is secured a-sound-box 1. The sound-box 4 is provided with the usual diaphragm, to the center of which is secured a stylus arm 5 pivoted at 6to the soundbox. The outer extremity of the stylus arm carries a socket 7 in which a stylus 8 is secured by means of a set .screw 9.

Carried on the motor board 1 is a pad or Vrest 10. The pad is positioned outside of the periphery of the turn-table 1l whereby when the sound-box' is resting on the pad, as shown, the surface of the 'turn-tablewill be cleared. f I

The pad is a brush-like structure, preferably ot'soft rubber, and comprises a founino. thit shown in Fig. 2, or the walls 12 may. extend upward to the level of' the ends of the dation 12 and a plurality of projections 13. Vhen the sound-box is positioned on the rest, the extremity of the stylus arm and the kset screw will engage the ends of the members 13 or 16, asthe case may be, and

the. point of the needle will rest between the members and be protected from harm. f

The pad shown in Figs. 1 and 2, being of softrubber, the point of the needle'will notl be injured even should itvcome in Contact Vwith the foundation 12.

Al needle rest pad constructed of soft rubber as herein described is more durable than one made of `felt, velvet, or other similar material, as in the latter type of pad the indentation made by the needle causes the material to wear rapidly, and thus detract Vfrom paratus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but Idesire to vhave it understood that the apparatus shown is merely illustrative, and that lthe invention can be carried out 1n other ways without ydeparting` from the spirit of my invention.

Having now described my invention, what vI claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is f 1.v In a. phonograph reproducer support, 'a stylus bar, a stylus carried by said stylus bar, said stylus projecting beyond and being in inoperative position, said rest comprising o1 less diameter than said stylus bar, a rest to support saidy stylus bar. and stylus when a pad having an elastic surface, and a plul rality of erect, elastic columnar members projecting above said surfacel a distance slightly greater than the distance from the end of said stylus bar to .the point of said stylus, said members being spaced apart a distance greater than the diameter ot' the s ylus and less than the diameter ot the stylus bar, "to "permit said stylus to pass freely between said 'members but to cause the tops of a plurality of said members to engage said stylus bar, whereby the weight of the stylus bar is borne by said members while the stylus projects below the tops oit and is surrounded by said columnar members.
