This invention relates to the type of stokers in which the fuel is delivered into the firebox through an aperture in the lower portion of the back head of the boiler, being piled up in a mound at the rearward end of the firebox and scattered from the top of the mound by suitable means such as a steam jet.
The object of the present invention is to increase the elficiency of stokers of this type by providing a reciprocating element for ushing upwardly the fuel as it enters the firebox and thereby keeping the mound of coal close to the back head.

The back head of a locomotive is represented at 10, and as being provided with the usual hand firing door opening 11. The floor or deck of the cab is shown at 12, the firebox grates at 13.
At 14; there is shown the floor of the fuel bin of the tender, and at 15 a hopper or trough 'located below this ing fuel through a suitable aperture therein. The tron h 15 may be rigidly attached to the tender rame, and attached to its forward end by means of a universal joint 16 is a fuel conduit 17, the forward end of which enters loosely into an aperture 18 in the back head 10. With the trough 15 and conduit 17 are suitable fuel advancing means, as screws 19, 20, which are connected together by a universal joint. Any suitable motor, as 21, operating the stoker mechanism, a telescopic shaft 22 transmitting power to the fuel advancing screws through any suitable connection.
The shaft 22 may be driven by means of a worm wheel 23 mounted thereon and meshing with a worm 24 carried by the crank shaft of the engine.

may be employed for Mounted within a suitable aperture in the rearward portion of the grate and directly below the discharge end of the conduit 17 is a reciprocating fuel lifter 25 which, as shown in Fig. 1, takes the form of an oscillating plate pivoted at 26 adjacent the back head 10 and actuated by means of a crank arm 27 connected by means of a link 28 to a crank arm 29 on a shaft which is driven from the crank shaft of the motor 21.
In Fig. 5 there is shown as a modification of the fuel lifter, a plunger 31 which reciprocates in a right line, being actuated by means of abell crank 32 to which the link 28 is attached.
A suitable form of gearing for driving the shaft 30 is shown in Figs. 3 and 4. there being a pinion 33 fixed on the crank shaft of the motor and meshing with the gear wheel 34 upon the shaft of which is mounted a pinion 35 which meshes with the gear wheel 36, fixed upon the shaft 30.
As fuel is delivered into the tire box from the conduit 17 it is piled up. adjacent to the back head forming a mound across the top of which plays steam jets issuing from the nozzle 37. The reciprocating element 25 or 31 assists in forming the mound, restraining the forward movement of the fuel as it issues from the ,conduit. The pile of fuel protects the lifter from the intense heat of the firebox.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination, a locomotive boiler provided with a fire box and having an aperture in its back head adjacent the lower margin thereof, means for delivering fuel through such aperture. a reciprocating lifter acting upon the fuel as it enters the firebox. and means for scattering the fuel from the mound thus formed.
2. In a locomotive, in combination, a [ire box and a grate therefor, a fuel transfer conduit arranged and adapted to deliver through the back head of the fire box upon the rear end of the grate, a reciprocating lifter for pushing the fuel upward as it enters the firebox, means for advancing the fuel in the conduit, a motor, and driving connection between the motor and the fuel advancing and lifting elements.
