UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrort JAMES POLK REISINGER, OF ASHLAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEASURING DEVICES FOR KNITTING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,4 [0, dated May 18, 1875; application filed December 29, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. P. REISINGER, of Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Measuring Device for Knitting-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention is designed for use in connection with a knitting-machine, for indicating accurately any desired length of fabric, for the purpose of enabling the operator to produce readilyarticles in pairs which shall be equal in length; and it consists, mainly, in the combination of a spring tape-measure of the ordinary construction with a suitable supporting-standard and a proper fastening device, by means of which it is attached to the work, all of which will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings is represented an elevation of my device.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to fully describe its construction and manner of operation.
A represents a vertical standard, having the suitable supporting-base a, as shown. B represents a socket-piece, adapted to be held by the standard A, which is provided with the arms I) I), attached to and supporting the spring tape-measure, as shown. 0 represents the spring tape-measure, which is of the usual well-k nowu construction. cl represents a suitable fastening device, preferably a hook, which is attached to the free end of the tape, and by means of which the latter is secured to the work.
The operation is as follows: The base of the supporting device rests upon the floor, but its upper portion extends upward through the set-up plate of the machine, and supports the spring tape-measure in proper relation to the work. The end of the tape, when it is desired to use the measure, is attached to the bottom of the work by means of its fastening device, and as the stocking is lengthened by the operation of the knitting -machine the tape will be drawn from its box, andindicate its length.
This simple invention enables the operator to see the length of the stocking at any time, and obviates the necessity of frequent measurements with a rod for the purpose of ascertaining whether the desired length has been knit or not.
. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the spring tape-measure, the supporting-standard, and the fastening device, substantially as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 25th day of December, 187 4..
' J. P. REISINGER.
