ENDLESS DRIER FOR MACARONI Application filed February 15, 1926. serial no. 88,256.
This invention relates to an endless drier for macaroni and its object; is to produce a drier which willbe capable of drying a considerable quantity of the material in a very short time, means being proivided to pass a large quantity of air over the mass of material in the drier.
Another object of the invention is to pro-.
vide wire screens for carrying the material 1 through the machine, the air currents passing through the several screens as the material' is carried along the screen.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the. air will be caused ,to pass through the material being dried as it falls from one carrier to the other, thereby insuring theeven drying ot'the entire mass.
Another object of the invention is to pro- 29 vide means whereby the screens will be brushed clean to prevent the accumulation of dirt thereupon as well as to provide a series of brushes which will insure the hold ing of the materials under treatment on the carriers until the end of the series has been reached. Another object of theinvention is to provide means whereby the end boards of the casing enclosingthe carriers may be easily 39 taken out whenever is necessary to examine the carriers or the materials thereon being treated.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings 1n whlch the same reference numeral isv applied to the plete machine, showing the chain for driving the carriers.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sec-- tional view of the machine looking from the opposite side of the machine from Fig. 1.

Figure 4 is an end elevation of the complete machine looking from the right of Figure 1, and 50 Figure 5 is a sectional view of one of the brush holders. Figure 6, is a view in elevation of one of the end doors of the casing illustrating the slides which support said doors and permits them to be removed or replaced at will.
The drier consists of a casingiwhich is" supported by sills 1 and Q eXtending the env tire length of the machine. A floor 3 rests 1 upon the sills l and '2, and, thereare a plug; rality of upright members tto 10on each; side of the machine which form the strut ture to which the side walls ll' and '12 "are; secured, there also being horizontal me mbers 13 to 24 to stiffen the end panelsof the casing and to stiffen the center panels near: the bottom, both sides being arranged in substantially the same way. At the top there are two horizontal members 25 and 26 on each side to give the necessary stilfness to the top of the casing and the top is com pletely inclosed except for the end opening by the cover 27. At theend opening there; is a hopper 28 through which the n'i'at'erial is dropped upon the upper 'screen'belt 57 ex.- tending transversely across the casing. The shaftsBO to 34 are journa-led' inboXes 4,0 to 44, mounted upon the members 20 to 24" inclusive, similar boxes being/used on both sides of the casing. At the oppositeend of,
the casing the shafts 35 to 39 are journaledf in adjustable boxes to 49 inclusive at both ends of the said shafts, and said boxes are adjusted by means of takeup bolts 50 to bi inclusive, the adjustment of which is accomplished by turning the nut j'55, all 0f which show in the two vertical end mem bers 4, one at each side of themachinei Carried by each of the shafts 30' to 39 inclusive isa roller 56, each of said shafts having'a', similar roller, and around which rollers the endless screen belts pass. The endless screen; belts pass around thedrums 56 on each ot the shafts 30, 39 and theother shaftsin. pairs, there being 5 endless screen belts in v all, said screens being numbered- 57, 58,,59f 60 and 61. On each side of the'casing just" below each screen, there is a groove to receive the brush bar 62, said brush bar itself having grooves to receive brushes 63, 64, the bristles of which are held in by narrow bars 65. There are 8 of the bars 62iour on each side of the casing with their bristles in contact with the lower run of the belt above them and in contact with the upper run of the belt below them. Above the top belt there is a similar slide 66 with only one set of bristles 67, which bristles engage the first belt of the series. And similarly below the lower belt 61 there is a bar 7 2 carrying a row of bristles 73 to clean the lower run of the belt 61. The bristles on these several bars also serve to properly direct the air through and along the belts and prevent it from passing the belts at their sides. The discharge end of the casing is provided with three closures which can be taken away at Will,see 75, 76 and 7 7, which closures are carried by a pair of slides 7 8, 7 9 slidable into grooves that the brush bars 62 and 66 are slidable in and secured to each of the end members to 77 inclusive, are the inclined slides 80, 81 and 82, the slides 80 and 81 having brushes as shown at 83 and 84 on their lowerv edges to direct the materials upon the two belts 58, 60.
At the discharge end of the casing there is a discharge chute in which there are a series of inclined battles 91, and under the last belt 61 there is an inclined chute 92 which has a brush 93 at its upper edge to supplement the action of the brush 73 in cleaning the belt. An inclined board 91 serves to assist in closing the casing.
At one end of the casing there is the fan 95 on the shaft 96 journal boxes 97, 98 bein provided for said shaft. A motor 99 is p aoed on the top of the casing and its belt 100 runs around the fan pulley 101 while the pulley 102 on the same shaft has a belt'103 which runs around the pulley 10 1 on the shaft 105 to drive the Worm 106 in mesh with the worm wheel 107. The shaft 105 is carried by two journal boxes 108, 109 and a universal joint 110 enables the worm wheel casing 111 to be installed without absolute alignment with the shaft 105.
The shaft 112 which carries the wornr' wheel also carries a sprocket wheel 113 around which the drive chain 114 passes, which extends around the drive sprockets 115 to 119 on the shafts 35 to 39.
The end of the casing over the fan is closed with a door 120, said door being carried by two slides 121 and 122 at each side of the casing, the same as the slides which carry the smaller door at the opposite end ofthe casing,and this door also carries an inclined chute 123 which directs'the materials upon the belt 59, said slide having a brush 12 1 at its lower edge bearing upon said belt. tween the belts 59 and 60 there is a horizon tal partition 125 which has a brush at 126 bearing upon the under side of the belt 59.
The operation is as follows: Macaroni is supplied to the hopper 28 and falls on the endless screen belt 57, and is carried to the end in the direction of the arrow and dropped on the belt 58 and is carried back to the other end of the casing and dropped on the belt 59 which belt drops it on belt ('50 and from that belt to the belt til, from belt 61 to the chute 90 and out. While the macaroni.- is traveling slowly through the casing a current of air is sent through and over the screen belts thoroughly drying the macaroni thereon. The action of the brushes 63, 6 1, 67 and 73 prevents the macaroni from getting down the sides of the belts.
The motor drives the fan and the fan shaft drives the endless belts by means of a shaft, worm and worm wheehsprockets and chain.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows: but modifications may be made in carrying out the invention as shown in the drawings and in the above particularly described form thereof, within the purview of the annexed claims.
1. An endless drier for macaroni comprising a casing, a series of endless screen belts mounted therein, grooves in both sides of the casing above each belt, slides in said grooves, brushes carried by said slides and adapted to bear on the tops of said belts adjacent the edges thereof, a fan in one end of said casing and means to drive said fan and said endless belts.
2. A drier of the class described comprising a rectangular casing, a series of endless screen belts mounted longitudinally in said casing, longitudinal grooves in both sides of the casing above each belt, slides adapted to be inserted in said grooves the full length thereof, brush bristles adapted to be clamped in said slides by a longitudinal .strip and bear on said belts ad acent the edges thereof.
