This invention relates, to index devices 'such as are. particularly adapted to be attached'to and used in connection with teletioned a means whereby the same may be readily attached to or detached from the conventional type of telephone transmitter mouthpiece and used in connection with the telephone without first removing the mouthpiece or without necessitating any alteration of transmitters.
A further object of th'einvention is to provide a generally improved and simplified or modification in the conventional designs combination of elements, rendering the structure in its entirety relatively inexpensive to manufacture but yet lending'rigidity to the device and insuring reliability in so far as its operation is concerned.

This mouthpiece 7 is en circled by a collar 8 forming a part'of the usual frame 9which is secured to the-transmitter 'casin :lOfand is adapted to carry a cardboard sip 11 onwhich. the -telephohe exchangeand number appears. f .Thepdevice" embodying 'our' invention is adapted to be readily attached-tothemouth piece 7 and comprises a frame or support 12, constructed preferabl from a strip of sheet metal which is so ent as to provide a base 13 carrying wings or ears 14, between which is fitted and by means of which is supported a spring actuated drum or roller 15. This drum is preferably constructed from a flat and more or less resilient blank or stamping of sheet metal rolled into a cylindrical-like tube 16, carrying ears or lugs 17, which may be utilized as a means for attaching to the drum an index sheet 18. Upon opposite ends of the tube 16 are fittcd caps 19 through which opposite ends of a shaft or spindle 20 project, the spindle being disposed centrally or axially within the tube 16 and provided with a torsional spring 21 which functions to oppose rotation of the drum in one direction and to facilitate its rotation in the opposite direction. This sprin at one end, is introduced into a slot 22 milled or otherwise formed in one end of the spindle 20, whereas the other end of the spring is bent into a parallel relation with respect to the axis. of the drum and 1s confined intermediate the cap 19 and the tube 16 within a pocket ,or depression 23 formed in the tube. The tube 16 is adapted to rotate upon the shaft or spindle 20 which is held against rotation by reason of the fact that one of its ends is flattened as shown at 24 and is snugly fitted into a more or less oblong opening 24 formed in the wing When forming the drum or roller the blank above mentioned is so rolled or shaped as to form in effect a split tube the diameter of which is normally somewhat greater than that of each of the caps 19. This tube is adapted to be so contracted, however, as to permit the application of the caps which, when applied, are held in their respective positions by reason of the fact that the tube under the influence of this inherent resiliency is forced 'or expanded int-o intimate frictional engagement with the caps at its ends. It will be appreciated from the construction of the drum or roller 15 thus far described that the several elements entering into the same may be easily assembled and are effectively held in their respective positions under all conditions incident to the operation of the device.
In order to prevent: longitudinal movement of the tube 16 with respect to the shaft when the drum as a. unlt is introduced into the space afforded between the wings 14 and supported thereby, we have provided the shaft 20 at one end with a shoulder 26 adapted to engage and coact with the adjacent cap 19. It will be appreciatedvthat the shaft 20 is retained against displacement by the wings 14 and that the shoulder 26 prevents displacement of the tube 16 in one direction whereas the adjacent wing 14 pre displacement in an opposite direction. It
will also be appreciated that since the shaft 20 is restrained against rotation and since the spring 21 is connected at opposite ends to the shaft 20 and tube 16, respectively, the spring will tend to retard rotation of the tube upon the shaft 20 in one direction and Will facilitate rotation of the tube in an opposite direction.
As a modified means for preventing 1ongitudinal displacement of the shaft 20 with respect to the tube 16 or vice versa when the drum as a unit is introduced into the space afforded between the wings 14 and is supported thereby, the shaft 20 may be provided with a groove 27 adapted for the reception of opposite arcuate shaped segments 28 of a washer 29 adapted to assume a position intermediate one of the caps .9 and the adjacent end of the tube 16. It will be noted that the washer 29 is split, thus providing an opening 30 which permits the shaft 20 to be readil introduced and assume such a position t at the oppositely disposedarcuate shaped segments 28 will seat within the groove 27. The washer 29 is maintained in position upon the shaft 20 during assembling by'reason of the 'fact that the segments 28 are urged toward each other through the instrumentality of a more or less resilient connection therebetween, which connection is in the form of a bridge or strap 32 formed integral with the sections 31, the strap being provided by reason of the fact that the slot 30 terminates relatively near the periphery of the washer in an arcuate shaped opening 33.
, The ring 8 of the usual card-retaining frame 9 is ordinarily provided with a flange 34 and'it is to this flange that we desire to attach the device embodying our inventionalthough it will be readily appreciated that the device may be attached directly to the mouthpiece 7 if desired. The means for facilitating the attaching or installation of the device regardless of whether it is desired to secure the same to the flange 34' or directly to the mouthpiece 7 comprises, in the preferred form of our invention, a pair of jaws or gripping elements 35 which are pivotally connected to the base 13 by means of rivets or the like 36. These jaws or gripping elements terminate in fingers 37 so out or shaped as to snugly fit either the flange 34 appreciated and understood by'those skilledof the periphery of the mouthpiece 7 at its jointure with the transmitter casing.'1 0. The arms or fingers upon being placed m. an embracing relation with respect to the flange 34 or mouthpiece 7 areforced into an intimate engagement therewithby means of a thumb screw 38' passed through a-flange 39- formed integral with the base 13. This screw is maintained in screw threaded en-' tating the thumb screw 38 in the proper.-
direction the free ends of the jaws 35, that is to say, the jaws at their point of connection with the ears 43 are moved downwardly towards the flange 39 thus causing the fingers 37 to swing about the pivots 36 into intimate engagement with the flange 34 or the mouthpiece 7 as the case may be. Upon loosening the thumb screw 38 the arms 37 are moved in an opposite direction about the pivots 36 through the instrumentality of a compression spring 44 confined between and adapted to engage the trunnion block 40' and the flange 39.
Upon the frame 12 there is arranged a removable cover or protector 45 which is constructed preferably from sheet metal and is bent into an arcuate shape so as to snugly fit the contour of the wings 14. If desired, opposite ends of the cover 45-may be flanged as shown at 46 to prevent longitudinal displacement of the cover with respect to the frame 12 and at the same time present a neat and attractive appearance. This cover may be further retained in position upon the frame 12 by the provision of anchoring lugs or protrusions 47 struck from the cover in such a spaced relation as to enter openings 48 formed in a reinforcing flange 49 carried at the upper longitudinal edge of the base 13.
To the drum 15 there is connected an index sheet 50 which is adapted for the reception of party names, exchanges and telephone numbers, reading from left to right respectively as shown in Figure 1. This index sheet may be of any desired'length within reasonable limits and is connected to the drum 15 through theinstrumentality of the ears 17 in a manner which will be readily in the art to which our invention pertains. In order to, reinforce the lower margin of the index sheet 50 and at the same timepro- "vide a convenient means for unwinding or withdrawing the sheet from the drum 15 we have'provided a finger grip or pull 51 formed integral with an elongatdb'ar 52* whichis, bent into a .u shaped cross section;

By so constructing the reinforcing bar 52 the same will, ,at-its point of, connection with the index sheet 50, present curved surfaces as shown at 56, by reason of which curved surfacesthe likelihood of the sheet becoming torn orbroken at: its point of connection with the bar 52 reduced to a minimum. i
In the modified form of our invention shown in Figure 11 the'grippingarms or ele mentsiadapted to engage either the. flange 34 or the mouthpiece 7 are disclosed as being in the form of clamps 57 constructed from a single length of more or less resilient wire forminga clamping unit 58 which is connected to the base 13 by means of screws or the like 59. These clamps are at their corresponding ends bent to conform to the shape of the mouthpiece 7 or flange 34 and.
are, at their extreme ends, bent or flared outwardly as shown at 60 in order that the clamping unit may be easily slipped into proper position, in which position it is effectively retained by reason of the inherent resiliency of the arms 57.
In the modified form of'our device shown in Figure 12 a pair of clamping jaws or elements 61 are employed which are similar to those indicated by the numeral 35. 1 These jaws 61 are pivoted to the base 13 by means of hook-shaped lugs 62 which are struck up from the support 12 and extend through openings 62' formed in the jaws 61. The lugs are bent over a bow spring 63 having its opposite ends arranged within sockets 64 carried by the jaws 61. The spring being embraced by the lugs 62 functions as a means for retaining the jaws 61 pivotally connected to the base 13 as will be readily appreciated. When the device is clamped upon either the flange 34 or mouthpiece 7 the bow spring 63, being under tension, will exert upon the jaws 61 a thrust in the direction of the arrows A thus tending to move the fingers 66 into intimate engagement with either the-flange 34 or mouthpiece 7 in the direction of the arrows B.
Referring to the modified form of our invention shown in Figure 13 is will be noted that the base 13' corresponding to the base 13 is formed'with a jaw-67 adapted to cooperate with a finger 68 carried by a movable jaw69 which is pivotally connected tothe base '13 by means of alug 70 which is struck up from'the base 13 and extends through the openin 70 EfOIHIBd lIIthG-j-ELW 69. The
aw 69 is a apted to cooperate with a spring 1,"-one '=en,d-of'whichais retained within "a braced by the lug and thus functions as a means for retaining the jaw 69 pivotally connected to the base 13. When the device is attached for example to the mouthpiece 7 as shown the spring 71 is maintained under tension, and being attached intermediate its ends to the jaws 67 and ()9, as above described, a thrust is exerted upon the jaw 69 in the direction of the arrow D thereby urging the finger 68 into intimate engagement with the mouthpiece 7 in the direction of the arrow E.
In the modified form of our, invention showniin Figure 14 the base 13 is provided with a pair of jaws or gripping elements 75 having fingers 76 adapted to conform to the contour of the mouthpiece 7 or the flange 34. These jaws are pivotally connected to the base 13 by means of pivots 77 and are provided with depending arms 78 to which readily detached.
In order that the index strip may be conveniently retained in its extended position against the influence of the spring 21 we have provided the sheet with a tubular rivet or eyelet 80 which is so shaped asto conform or approximately conform to the shape of the roller 15, as will be readily appreciated from an inspection of Figure 18.
This rivet is adapted to receive a suitable pin or the like 81 which, when placed in the position shown in Figure 23, coacts with the frame 12 as will be readily appreciated to prevent the index strip 50 from being retracted through the instrumentality of the.
spring 21. If desired, however, the thumb screw 38 may be provided with an extension or pin 82 over which the eyelet 80 may be hooked, as shown in Figure 21, thus obviating the necessity of the pin 81'. As a further wmodification of the strip retaining means attention is directed to Figure 22 wherein the casing or cover 45 is shown as provided with a lip or finger 83 over which the rivet or eyelet 80 is adapted to be placed as hereinbefore described in connection with the disclosure in Figure 21. If desired the rivet 80 may be dispensed with and the opening 84 reinforced by means of a flexible washer 85, as shown in Figure 19, constructed from a suitable material. This washer may be stitched to the index sheet While'we have shown and described what we at present consider the preferred forms of our invention it will be understood that other changes as to details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the sub-joined claims.
Having thusdescribed our invention we claim:
1. An index device adapted to be clamped to a suitable support comprising an indexstrip-carrying element, a frame supporting said carrying element, relatively movable clamping elements carried by said frame and adapted to engage said support whereby said frame is'adapted' to be connected to said support, said clamping elements being in the form of relatively movable jaws, and
spring tension means for effecting relative movement between said jaws.
2. An index device adapted to be attached to a support comprising a frame having a base provided with a pair of wings, a spring actuated roller rotatably mounted intermediate and supported by said wings, means for retarding rotation of said roller in one direction and for facilitating rotation-of the roller in an opposite direction, said means being in the form of a spring associated with said roller, an index strip having one end attached to said roller, means for attaching said frame to said support, and a removable cover adapted to be attached to said frame whereby said roller, is enclosed.
3. An index device adapted to be connected to the mouthpiece of a telephone, said device comprising a frame having a pair of wings associated therewith, ashaft supported by andbetween said wings and having a slot formed therein, means for retaining said shaft against rotative and longitudinal movement with respect to said wings, a roller mounted upon'said shaft and provided at one end with an indenture, caps carried by said roller at opposite ends thereof, a torsional spring arranged within said roller and disposed about said shaft, one end of said spring being arranged within said slot,
whereas the opposite end of said spring is disposed within said indenture between the adjacent cap and said roller, movable clamping jaws extending upwardly from said frame for attaching the device to said mouthpiece, and means for actuating said jaws in unison.
