N 163 389 PatentedMay 18,1'875.-

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JAMES W. MODONOUGH, OFGHIOAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN RECLlNlNG-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,389, dated May 18, 1875; application filed January 12, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. MCDONOUGH, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new, useful, and Improved Rocking-Chair, of which-the following is a full, clear, and exact description,
which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, and in which the figure there shown represents aside elevation of a chair embodying my invention.
In the drawing, A represents one of the rockers, and B the seat. The seat and rockers are rigidly connected to each other. 0 is a notched or serrated plate rigidly attached to the seat. D represents one of the arms, and E is a catch pivoted thereto, and arranged to engage the notches in the plate (J. F is the back, which is pivoted or hinged to the seat. G is a jointed foot-rest, also hinged to the seat. H is a connecting-piece attached to the back, to the parts D D, and to the foot-rest, each side of the chair being provided with a part, H.
A person sitting in the chair may, by releasing the catch E, readily assume a reclining position. When a sitting posture is resumed, the back-and foot rest will assume their original position, or may be easily made to do so either by pushing downward on the foot-rest or forward on the arms.
The chair may also be compactly folded when not in use, or for transportation, especially when the part H consists of flexible or fibrous material, cloth or leather being deemed preferable.
I am aware that the back, seat, and footrest have been jointed and connected to each other, and controlled or held in any desired position by means of a catch, and I do not here claim such broadly; but
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the tiltingarms D D, pivoted to the seat B, the catch E, pivoted to one of the said arms, the notched plate 0, attached to the seat, the tilting back F, pivoted to the seat, the foot-rest G, also hinged to the seat, and the flexible connecting-pieces H H, attached to the back, arms, and foot-rest, all arranged and operating together substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
JAMES W. MGDONOUGH.
