Description
H. H. BLA KE.
Elevator.
Patented May 18,1875.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
HENRY H. BLAKE, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ELEVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,354, dated May 18, 1875; application filed March 27, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. BLAKE, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Elevators and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of floor, hatchway, and elevator-platform, the former being in broken section.
This invention relates to elevator'locks designed to lock the platform at the stoppingplaces; and consists in so constructing the walls of the pit or hatehway with reference to its passage-ways to the elevator that the elevator-door, when opened outwardly, enters the passage-way, and thus securely locks the platform, so that when the door is open the platform cannot move.
The object of my invention is, then, to have the platform always locked while the door is open. For this purpose I hinge the door very firmly, and have it made so as to just fit and open into the passage-way through the pitwalls, or the reverse, viz., the door in the passage-way opens into the elevator in like manner.
Sometimes very serious and even fatal accidents occur by the starting of the platform before the passengers are ready, or by carelessly leaving an arm or a head exposed while in motion; but with my improvement this is impossible, as the platform cannot move till the door is closed and all communication with theoutside shut ofi'. Thus no one can get in or out during the ascent or descent of the platform.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, A represents the platform, with its door B opening outwardly into or through the passage-way O of the walls of the pit or hatchway. The reverse is a modification so evident as to need no further description.
In ascending or descending, when the elevator reaches the passage-way O, the door is opened, and only then, when the platform is in a position of security and rest, can any one pass in or out. Thus all dangers arising from a premature start are obviated, and safety secured.
I am aware that a patent has been granted for lockin g the elevator by means of bolts, &c., actuated by the door, and do not therefore claim, broadly, the use of a door in looking, but
What I do claim as my invention is as follows:
In a passenger-elevator constructed sub stantially as described, the car having a door arranged to swing outwardly, so as to intersect the landings and act as a stop to prevent the movement of the car while said door is open, as shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of March, 1875.
HENRY H. BLAKE.
