CAST-IRON STEAM-HEATING FURNACE.

The present invention is directed to improvements in'cast iron steam heatmg furnaces.
The primary object of the invention 1s to provide a device of this character so constructed that water therein can be effectively heated and maintained at an even temperature.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature constructed in such manner that entrance of air to the fire pot can be effectively regulated to aid in combustion, means being provided to assure even distribution of the fuel in the fire pot.
lVith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated 1n the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the device.

Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the ring. Figure 5 is a plan view of the bar. The furnace comprisesa base 1 constltuting an ash pit and has connected thereto a housing 2 to permit the removal of ashes, said housing having a door 3 connected thereto, as is customary.
The wall of the base 1 is provided with a horizontal flange at and upon which rests the lower edge of the off-set flange 5 carried by the inner wall 6 of the fire pot 7, the outer wall 8 of which being spaced therefrom to produce an annular air chamber 8'. The outer wall 8 fits in the base 1 and the flange 5 rests upon the flange l, and when thus assembled an annular air compartment 9 is provided and has communication with the chamber 8. Entrance of air to the compartment 9 is had through the opening 10, there being a boxing 11 hingedly connected with the fire pot and operable to control the flow of air.
The inner wall 6 is provided with a plu rality of slots 12 to permit air from the chamber 8 to enter the fire pot, as desired.
By providing the off-setfiange 5 an annular shoulder 13 is produced and upon this shoulder rests the horizontal flange 14 of the grate bar supporting ring 15, said ring having bars 16 carried thereby which merge at their inner ends with a plate 17 said plate piped to the having standards 18 rising therefrom, the upper end of which merge with a head 19. In this head is threaded a bolt 20, the upper end of which 'engages'the conical spreader 21 and it will be obvious that upon rotation of the bolt that the spreader can be raised or lowered, as desired vided with a skirt 22 for telescopically engaging the band 23 supported by the bars 16, and in this manner said spreader is held against wobbling, as will be obvious.
The boiler 24 has its lower header 25 rest ing upon'thc upper end of the fire pot, thus closing the upper end of the chamber 8, said lower header and the upper header 26 having the respective ends of the flues 27 con nected thereto, there being a circular fuel chute 28 supported by said headers and forms in conjunction with the wall ofthe boiler an annular water and steam chamber 29.
A dome 30 is mounted upon the top of the boiler and forms in conjunction with the upper header 26 a chamber 31 into which the products of combustion from the fines enter, said dome having a feed opening 32 in registry with the chute 28 in order that fuel can be conveniently dropped into the fire pot.
At one point the walls 6 and 7 are recessed, as at 33, to enable the condition of the fire to be observed through the casing 34 carried by the fire pot.
A pair of splash rings 35 are within the chamber 29 and are spaced to accommodate the flues 27. V
The boiler is provided with suitable connections 35 near its upper end to permit steam generated in the chamber 29 to be desired points.
Any suitable means, such as the pipe 36 'may be employed for refilling thochamber 29 with water.
Suitably connected with the ring 15 is a bar 37 which can be grasped in the housing 2 to oscillate said ring in order that the fuel may be evenly distributed around the spreader, said ring being rotatable on the This spreader is prosupported shoulder 13 through the medium of the flange 14.
