MULTI-FLY BAG.
Application led July 28, 1925.
Our invention relates to multi-ply bags, more particularly to multi-ply paper bags for cement and other weighty substances, and has for its object to provide anovel paper bag made of two or more thicknesses in which the closure at the top or bottom is formed by securing overlapping flaps by glue or other adhesive, each ply being secured substantially independently of the other so as to form a. firmly secured yet supple flat closure. Another object of our invention is to provide a flat closure multi-ply bag, the closure of which is secured bv glue applied to one side only of the several plies of the Hap in an ordinary bag closure forming machine.
The following is a description of our invention as embodied in our improved bag and the method of producing the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,

folded bottom closure 2 and the folded valve closure Lt. In making this bag we first form a tube 6 which is cut up into sections 8. As each section 8 is cut ott' we fold about it the sheet 10, as shown at 12. In forming these tubes adhesive is applied to the outer or overlapping edges, so that when the tube is folded the two edges of the respective plies are secured together. After the sheet l0 is formed into a tube about a section 8 it is severed at a point 14.- midway between successive sections 8, which sections are spaced apart, as shown at 16, so'that the outer tubular section extends beyond the inner tubular section at both ends, producing what is hereafter described as a shingle effect. In forining these sections the Ordinary grip tab 1S is formed at one end on the outer ply of thel section and a corresponding recess is formed on the opposingend of the outer ply of the preceding section.
Prior to the folding of the outer ply about the inner ply, short longitudinally extending lines of adhesive 2O are applied to the bottom and top surfaces of the inner tube, eX-
tending al few inches from each end so that the innerply is locally secured to the outer ply adjacent to its top and bottom ends, so as to enable the multi-ply tube to be bottomed and sealed in ordinary bottoming and These short lines of the glue upon the top and bottom ends of the inner ply are shown in dots in the developed Fig. 3, and are also shown in the sectional View, Fig. 6, which also shows the adhesive strips 22 and 24 securing the edges ot the tubes.
The bottom end of the tube is then slit along the lines 26 and the resulting side flaps 28 and 30 pulled in one direction, while the side naps 32 and 34 are pulled in the opposite direction, as shown in Fig. 7. This is done by pulling on theouter flaps 28 and 32, the inner flaps and 34 following on account of the adhesive 20 locally connecting them thereto. lThis causes the edges of the bag 36 and 38 to fold inwardly to form end flaps as shown in Fig. 7, the side and end flaps to lie in substantially the same surface, which, in the bottoming machine, conforms to the-surface of a cylinder. After the parts have been thus opened up, adhesive 40 is applied to the exposed faces of the shingled side fiaps 28 and 30 and the exposed faces substantially independently of the flap lposed between the flaps 28 and 30.

As will be evident to those skilled in the art, our invention permits of various modilications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What we claim is:
l. In a multi-ply bag, the combination of two tubes, one itting within the other and in shingled relation at adjacent ends thereof, said shingled ends having inwardly extending multi-ply end flaps and inwardly extending shingled multi-ply side iiaps overlapping said end iaps, one of said multi-ply side flaps overlying the other multi-ply side iiap, and adhesive independently securing the shingled portions of the several layers of the multi-ply side flap directly to the external layer of the other multi-ply side iiap.
2. In a multi-ply bag, the combination of two tubes, one fitting within the other and in shingled relation at adjacent ends thereof, said shingled ends having inwardly extending multi-ply end flaps and inwardly extending shingled multi-ply side flaps overlapping said end flaps, one of said multiply side flaps overlying the other multi-ply n side flap, and adhesive independently securing the shingled portions of the several layers of one multi-ply side flap directly to the external layer of the other multi-ply side flap, and adhesive securing an inner and outer shingled layer of the under multi-ply side iiap directly to the outer layers of the end flaps.

In the method of making a multi-ply ba'g, the improvement which consists in forming a tubular section and forming about said tubular section a. second tubular section, and spacing the end of said first section within and away from the corresponding end of the outer tube section so as to produce a shingled relation, securing opposing surfaces of* said sections together locally adjacent to the spaced away end of the inner section, slitting the spaced ends of said tube sections to form two shingled side flaps and two end iiaps, folding said end flaps inwardly and then folding said side flaps inwardly and securing the several plies of the outer shingled side flap directly to the outer ply of the inner side flap by adhesive.
6. In a multi-ply ba'g, the combination of two tubes, one fitting within the other and in shingled relation at adjacent ends thereof, said shingled ends having inwardly extending multi-ply end flaps and inwardly extending multi-ply side flaps having shingled portions overlapping said end flaps, one of t said multi-ply side flaps overlying the other muiti-ply side flap, and adhesive independently securing shingled portions of the several layers of one multi-ply side iiap to the external layer of the other multi-ply side flap, and adhesive separately securing the shingled portions of the inner and outer layers of the under multi-ply side flap directly to the outer layers of the end flaps.
7. In a. multi-ply bag having two tubular sections, one being within the other and shingled at adjacent ends thereof, inwardly extending multi-ply end flaps, inwardly extending inulti-ply side flaps overlapping said end tiaps, one end of said overlying multi-ply i side flap overlapping' the other multi-ply side flap, the several plies of the overlying side la p each having shingled portions contacting directly with the outer ply of the other side flap and adhesive securing said contacting 2 5 portions of said several plies directly to said outer ply, the end edges of the plies of said outer side flap being parallel to the end edges of the plies of said inner side flap.
8.
