PATENT ALEXANDER H. RILEY, OF BUTLER, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS TO CROSSCUT-SAWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,256, dated May 11, 1875; application filed April 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER H. RILEY, of Butler, in the county of Taylor and State of Georgia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Orosscut-Saw Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construc tion and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal vertical section of my device, and Figs. 2 and 3 are plan views of the same. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views, and Fig. 6 is a side view of the same.
This invention has relation to means for aiding sawyers in operating crosscut-saws in gangs and the nature of my invention consists mainly in the means for suspending the saws and at the same time allowingthem to be fed down to their work, said means consisting in a pulley-carrying frame, which can be spiked upon a log at any desired point, over the pulleys of which plays a suspension.- strap, which is adjustably attached to one or both ends of the saws by means of an elastic strap, as will be understood from the following description:
In the annexed drawings I have represented two saws, A A, which are in lines parallel to each other; but in practice I contemplate using more than two saws. The ends of the saws A A are suitably-secured to angular end ieces B B, having eyes a a through them to receive handles 1) b, which are held by the workmen while operating the saws. At or near the extremities of the saws A A are cross'bars G G, which serve as braces, and also as ties for the saws and the end pieces thereof. The cross-bars O O, and also the angular end pieces B B, are composed of sections, which are slotted longitudinally and secured together by nuts and bolts, as shown in the drawings, which, when loosened, will allow the saws to be adjusted from or toward each other for sawing different lengths of logs. D designates a frame, consisting of two checks, which are secured to a base, E, having spikes on its bottom. The frame D affords bearings for three grooved pulleys, 0 c 0, which have passed around them a suspension-strap, G, the ends of which are adjustably attached by buckles (Z, or other suitable means, to elastic straps e e, which are secured to the cross-bars G G at the middle of the length of these bars.
It will be seen from the above description that the frame D, from which the saws are suspended, can be spiked to a log at any desired point; also that the weight of the saws is in a great measure sustained by the straps G e, the elastic portions of which will allow the saws to descend as the cutting progresses and when these elastic portions have stretched as far as is practicable, the buckles at will allow the operator to slacken the straps and continue the sawing as before.
It is by means of the suspension'straps that two or more large saws can be conveniently worked by one or two men and the feed of the saws regulated as circumstances require.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The saws A secured to adjustable end pieces B, in combination with the spiked pulley-frame D and the elastic and non-elastic straps G e, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ALEXANDER H. RILEY.
