FASTENER-SETTING IEECHANISM.
Application filed April 22, 1926.
iis invention relates te an iniproved fastener setting mechanism.
e The object of the invention is to provide a sett-ing' mechanism which will feed, position andv drive and clinch in sheet material pronged fasteners having` an annular head.
rlhe invention consists in the improved inechanisin hereinafter set forth in the specication and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings z` Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of my improved fastener' rotting n'iechanisui.
Fig. El is a front elevation of the saine.
Figi'. 3 is a sectional elevation taken on the line Sil-3, 2 and with the fastener fingers closed together and supporting a pronged fastener thereon. y
Fig. l is a figure similar to 3, hut with the driver and plunger lowered part way and the fastener supporting` ting-ers spread part way.
Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation similar to 3 and il, but showing` the plunger and driver still further lowered and the fastener supporting?, fingers spread wide open.
Fig. 6 is a. section similar to Figs. 3, 4 and 5 with the driver and plunger in their lowernio't positions, the fastener supporting` fingers spread wide apart, and the fastener' driven and clinched in a piece of material.
Fig. is a detail sectional plan taken on the line ll-?, Fig'.
Fig. 5% is a detail sectional line l-8, Fig. 3L
.Lilie numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
ln the drawings, 10 isthe frame of the machine. 11 is a hopper which feeds the pronged fasteners down a raceway 12 to he delivered one hy one between a pair of 1insers 13 and 14 pivotally support-ed at 15 and 16 upon a stationary holder 17 comprising a hase 18 and an upwardly extending;` shank 19, which is adjustahly supported in a head 2O of the frame 10 by an arin 21 and adjusting screw 2Q, so that the height of the. iingljers may he adjusted as may he desired.
The fingers 13 and 14 are drawn toward each other by a spring` 23, and each of said fingers has a semi-circular recess 2st adjacent its lower end, and plates and 26 are fastened to the lower ends of the iingers 13 and 141 and when the fingers are in their norplan taken on Serial No. 103,923.
inally closed position as in Fig. 3, the pronged fastener 27 rests upon these plates 26 within the recesses 2e', which approximately surround the prongs of the fastener.
A stop plate 28 is fastened to the under side of the hase 18 and .has a pair of ears 29 and 30 which project therefrom into alignment with the lingers 13 and 14, so that when the sgi-ing;` is freeto act it draws said fingers toward eachother until th-ey abut against the ears Q9 and 30 as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 7.
A driver 31 is slidably mounted in the head 2O and has a reciprocatory motion iinparted thereto by a hifurcated link 32 pivotally attached at 33 thereto, to which a reciprocatory motion. is imparted hy a lever 34k which has a rockin@ inotion imparted thereto hy mechanism not shown in the drawings but well known to thoseslrilled in this art. rlhe driver 31 is provided in its lower end with an annular groove 35 adapted to receive the annular head 36 of the fastener 27, and within the driver 31 there is slidahly mounted a plunger 37 which is inoved downwardly in the driver 31 by a spring' 38. The plunger 37 is held positioned in the driver 31 hy a cross pin 39 which projects inte a slot 10 provided in one side of the driver 31. Normally, the lower' end or forward end of the plunger 37 project. beyond the forward end `of the driver 31.
An anvil l-l is positioned upon an arm 12 of the frame 10 in alignment` with the plunger 37 and driver 31, said anvil being provided with an annular groove 4:3, and the material-1111 in which the fastener is to he driven and clinched is placed upon this anvil.
rlhe `a'cneral operation of the mechanism hercinhefore specifically described is as follows Pronged fasteners 27, having an annular head, are fed from the hopper 11 down the raceway 12 and one hy one are fed into the position illustrated in Fig. 3 where thev fastener is shown restingl upon the plates 2G within the circular recess 24e, the fingers 13 and 141 being` at that time in their closed position and held in said closed position hy the spring 23 and abutting against the ears 29 and 30. The driver 31 and the4 plunger 37 carried thereby now descend from the position illustrated. in Fig. 3 to that illustrated in.
Fig. 4. The lower end of the plunger 37 is beveled so that it enters the annular bore of the head of the fastener 27 and is forced.
into frictional engagement therewith by the driver 31 through the spring 38.
During this downward movement of the driver and plunger and after the plunger has entered the bore of the fastener, the
head of the fastener enters the annularV groove 35 in the driver 31, and then upon further downward movement the lingers 13 and 14 are forced apart by the fastener as illustrated in Fig. 4 until, as in Fig. 5, the fastener is brought downwardly toward the material 44 which is then resting upon the anvil 41 as illustrated in Fig. 5. At this time the fingers are wide apart and the plates 26 are resting against the sides of the driver 31.
Now upon a further downward movement,
the prongs of the fastener are driven through the material and cllnchod therein b vV en- Y gagement with the anvil 41.
The parts are then returned to the relative positions illustrated in Fig. 3 ready for the setting operation to be repeated.
The reciprocatory motion of the driver 31 and plunger 37 is accomplished by means of the lever 34 and other mechanisms not shown in the drawings, but well known to those' skilled in this art.
The material in which the fasteners are set is positioned upon the anvil 41 and fed ni'ally projecting out of said driver beyond the annular groove therein, an anvil in alignr ment with said driver, and mechanism to iinpart a reciprocatory motion to said driver and plunger, whereby the prongs of said fastener may, be clinched in a piece of inaterial interposed between the driver and anvil and the plunger caused to contact with the material and to be thereby forced out of the fastener and rearwardly into the driver. l
2. A' mechanism for setting an annular pronged fastener' having, in combination, a driverr provided with an annular groove adapted to receive the head portion of said fastener, a spring-actuated plunger in said driver adapted to frictionally engage the inner lface of said annular fastener and hold it positioned thereon, the forward end of said plunger normally projecting out of said driver beyond the annular groove therein, an anvil in alignment with said driver, a yielding and laterally movable support for said fastener` interposed between said driver and anvil, and mechanism to impart a reciprocatory movement to said driver and plunger, whereby the pron of said fastener may be clinched in a piece of material interposed between said support and anvil.
3. A mechanism for setting an annular pronged fastener having, in combination, a driver provided with an annular groove adapted to receive the head portion of said fastener, a spring-actuated plunger in said driver adapted to frictionally engage the inner face of said annular fastener and hold it positioned thereon, the forward end of said plunger normally projecting out of said driver beyond the annular groovetherein, an anvil in alignment with said driver, a support for said fastener comprising a stationary member and a pair of fingers pivoted thereto normally interposed between said driver and anvil and movable toward and away from each other, and a spring acting toinove them toward each other, and ineans to impart a reciprocatory movement to said driver and plunger, whereby a fastener positioned in said i'ingers willrbe engaged and gripped by said driver and plungeiguthe fastener pushed through between said fingers and its prongs clinched in a piece of inaterial interposed between the fingers and anvil. l
In testimony whereofrl'have hereunto set my hand. Y
ARTHUR R'. HAVENER.
