This invention relates to reenforcedfablie for garment construction and .isprimarily directed to reenforced coat front.

In coat fronts as heretofore'made it has beenthe practice to attach the stiffening or lining material at the-lapel only and notz-at thebreast orshoulder with theresultthat relative shifting and sagging of 'the. body portion of the garment with relation to the reenforcing or stiffening would occur.

Further than this, the diagonal stretching to which all woven goods are subject is not counteracted by the stiffening, and, the coat soon bulges, wrinkles or is otherwise uneven over the portion which is most exposed with consequent unsightly results.

Further than this it has been impractical, heretofore, to stiffen the front of the coat beneath the arm in the region of the side seam. very readily wrinkles and becomes unsightly.

This invention is designed to overcome the above noted defects, and objects of such in-- vention are to provide a reenforced fabric which is particularly directed to coat fronts, which is so constructed that stretching diagonally of the weave of the fabric is wholly avoided.

Further objects are to provide a coat front construction in which the reenforcem-ent or stitching is secured in an adequate manner throughout its extent to the body of the fabric, in which the diagonal stretching of the main body fabric is prevented by the reenforce itself, in which the body fabric is supported through the extent of the reenforce and is held against stretching or bulging at any portion thereof.

Further ob ects of this invention are to provide a stiffened coat front in which horizontal lines of stitching are employed to secure the stiffening to the coat front throughout its extent, and in which the stiffening is extended to adjacent the side seam beneath the arm.

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the body portion 1 of the coat front is formed in the usualmanner with the threads of the woven goods running vertically and horizontally. The stitching or reenforce 2 is This unstiffene'd portion, therefore,

I The reenforce 2 is secured to the body portion 1 by means of a plurality of. parallel horizontal rows of stitching3 which are preferably blind stitching to keep from showing on the front of the garment. These rows are sufficiently close together to make the reenforce and'body portion 1 act as a single en tity and prevent separation of one from the other in any portion of their extent. In other words the reenforce is securely attached to the body portion not only at its edges but throughout its extent. I

Obviously, in forming a reenforced fabric of this general'nature the two plies with the weave of one running diagonally with reference to the weave of the other may be se-, cured by cementing or in fact in other ways than by stitching,as shown in the drawings. However, it has been found in the actual practice of this invention that the relatively closely spaced horizontal lines of blind stitching form the most effective means of securing the reenforce to the body portion and have other characteristics which will be described hereinafter.

r It is to be noted particularly that the body portion 1 is not permitted to stretch diagonally of its weave in View of the fact that the threads of the reenforce are non-extensible and are diagonally arranged with reference to the threads of the body portion.

Thus unsightly stretching, bulging or wrinkling of the finished coat is wholly prevented.

This is readily apparent from the fact that the reenforce is secured firmly to the body or main portion 1 of the coat front beneath the arm pits and adjacent the side seams by a continuation of the horizontal rows of stitching.

Although the invention has been described inconsiderable detaihit is to be understood that the invention may be 'variouely einbodied and is tlierefore, to be limited only as claimed.

I claim:

In a coat, the combination of a body portion. formed of fabric with the threads running horizontally and vertically, a stiffener for the-front thereoi extending across the lapel to the arm pit and to the seam below the arm pit, said stiffener being formed of fabric With its threads running diagonally in all portions or the stiffener both in the. lapel and in the body portion and horizontal lines of stitching attaching said Stifi ener to said body portion.
