This invention relates to an improved electric fan of the port-able type.
The invention has more specltic lreference to a structure ofthls kindwherem the fan proper is mounted forrotation about a true horizontal axis and the motor and housing is mounted upon the standard to move about a true vertical axis, means being provided for actuating said parts, whereby to pro#y duce a straight forward current of air from the fan, and to cause this current to sweep in a step by step manner throughout'a complete circle. v
The details for accomplishing this improved result will become more readily' apparent from the following description and drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view of the improved structure.
Fig. 2 is a section taken .on the line 2-2 y of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectionall view showing certain of the parts more in particular. n Y
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the reference character 1 designates the upright of a stationary supportingbase, the same having a somewhat spherical enlarge- Vment or head 2 at its top. Then, as shown in Fig. 3, a socket 3 is formed in saidftop. Resting on the top of the upright is a ring 4 carrying a central depending sleeve 5v fitted into and terminating in spaced relation with the bottom of said socket. Retaining screws 6 serve to secure the sleeve to thel upright.
Pinned or otherwise rigidly secured toV the ring 4, inward of the marginal portion is a ratchet annulus 7 Surrounding this', is a .relatively movable collar 8 carrying a set screw 9 on one side, and carrying a spring pressed ratchet pin 10 on its opposite side. commodate and receive this pin 10.
Obviously, the pin extends into the space shown in Fig. l2 and engages the ratchet teeth. vThe fan is represent-edV by the reference characteru12, and as before stated,
this is secured upon a shaft 13 vrotatable on a horizontal axis. The shaft is driven by .a
conventional motor, (not shown), in the j housing or casing 14. This casing as is better shown in Fig. 3 has a neck 15 at its bottom which rests upon a circular bearing plate 16 which in turn bearsupon a washer 17 resting on the aforesaid ratchet 7.
The small housing 11 is made to' ac- Connected to the collar 8 is an operating link 18 whlch has pivctai connection asl at 19 to the-ratchet pin housingll. The op,-
posite end of this link is connected to an.
, .re-tief With the arrangement described, it is ob- V vious `that when the set screw 9 is llocked yagainst the ratchet 7, the casing and fan structure willsiinply be oscillated in a well known manner. By loosening the setscrew however, a pawl and ratchet mechanism is permitted to come into play in order to move the entire casing and fan, as a unit, in a step by'step manner throughout a complete circle. Thus, we havel a fan which projects a straight-forward current of air which can be caused to sweepr throughout a complete circle. Y A .y
Carried by and depending from the center of the motor Vcasing 14 isa hollow spindle 21 which extends down into the aforesaid sleeve 5 and is rotatable therein on a vertical axis. At its bottom this spindle is provided with an annular groove into which the inner end portion of the aforesaid bolts 6 extend as shown plainly in- Fig. 3. `Arrangement within the spindle of the electricity conductors, 22, and 23 are connected together by a ball and socket joint as at 24. These con- '.draw'ings, a clear understanding of thev in-v vention will be obtained. In` view of this,
amore lengthyV description is thought un' necessary. .Y
' 'While the preferredembodiment lof the inventionhas been shown and described, it is to be understood that minor changes coming withiny the field of invention claimed may be resorted to if desired.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is f In an electric fan,\an upright support, a head rotatable on thesupport and including a fan 'rotatable about an axis at a rightfangle to the axis of rotation 'of the head, an eocentric operatively connected with the fan, an annular ratchet on the support, anan- Vnnluscircunijaccnt the ratchet, a set screw 1n the annulus and engagea'ble` .with the gether, a spring pressed pawl mounted in the annulus to engage lthe ratchet, :1ndv a .link engaged with the eccentric and thev annulus so that` with one operation of the fan oscillatory movement is imparted tol the head when the Set screnT is engaged with the ratchet or rotary intermittent motion is imparted to the head When the set screw is rdiserrgaged from the ratchet. In' testimony whereotl We4 our signatures.
