The spring-guard A4 is in the form of a fiat strip of spring metal, which is provided at its lower end with a lcircular perforation 15 which .Hts on the embossment 9u and has extending from its upper side a short slot 1,5, adapted to admit the bit of the lrey.

In assembling the parts, the spring A4 is interposed between the members A2 and A3, and portions ot' the rearvmrdly extending iange 4; of the member A2 are bent or crimped over the rear edges of the segmental flanges lO ot the member A3, as indicated at 4, The spring A4 normally bears against the lower flange 7a of the coin-slot 7, and the upper'end of the spring serves as a guard for the coin-slot.` The guard member` 11 projects rearwardly over the vhousing member 13 a sufiicient distance to guide bills inserted through the bill opening 8i over the slot-guard A4. rllhe member 11 also serves to prevent tampering with the slotguard, as bythe insertion olf an instrument through the opening 8.

The preferred manner of seeming the closure in position'is to 'provide the circumferential wall of the casing-section A near the front edge of the upper portion lwith a stud 16 which engages-a perforation 16 in the flange 4; and to equip the casing-section A. at its -lower portion with a spring latch or locking member 17 which has a catch portion 17a in the forni of a hook wlv 'cli is adapted to engage an upturned lip 4t with which the flange l is provided atV its lower portion. 'lhe member 17 lis vin the form of a strip of spring metal whose rear end portion is secured, by rivets 18, to the circumferential wall of' the casing-section A. The 'front portion of the member 17 extends through a yoke 19 which is secured to the circumferential wall of the casing-section Arby` rivets 19a. The frontend of the member 17 is provided with an arm 17b which is bent upwardly and then extended forwardly to provide a lug 17 c which is adapted to be struck by the bit ot the key when the ley'is Ainserted through the key-slot and turned. lThe key'is designated 20, and is provided with a bit 20, which, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 11, is adapted to engage the lug 17 c to retract the locking member 17. AWillen the key is in the rotated position indicated bythe dotted lines, the hook or 'latching lip 172L is withdrawn from engagement with'the lip 4b, and the lrey may thenibe employed to withdraw the closure. A savings bank comprising a cupsliaped casing-section adapted to rest on one side, a longitudinally disposed spring memvber secured within said Casing-seetionat" the lower side thereof .and equipped with a looking .11p and a key engaging arm,and a guard- .equipped closure comprising a closure Cap Ahaving a flange extending into said oasing-section and equipped with a locking lip, said closure having an end wall provided at its upper portion with' a bill-slot, at an inter-v mediate `portion with a coin-slot, and at Yits lower portion with a key-slot and an inner embossment at said key-slot, a guardy plate having a rearwardly projecting upperA flange disposed above the coin-slot, and having an intermediate guide for a spring guard, and having a lower portion provided with a key-slot registering with said first named key-slot, means securing said guard plate within the flange of said closure cap7 and a leaf spring having its lower end portion anchored between the end wall of said olosure cap and said guard plate and having its upper end extending over the coin-slot and free to work in said guide.`
