My invention relates to'a new anduseful improvement in a toy, and has for its object,
in structure, economicalof ii'ianufacture and highly efficient in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a toy having a staff, provided-with a rotatable member mounted thereon, so ar ranged and constructed'as to assurethe ef-' ficient operation of'said rotatable member under normal conditions.
Another object of the invention is the provision in a toy-of; this kind of a staff havinga rotatable member, rotatably mountprojected at an inclinart ion to which form apart of-this specification and in which, I r
Fig. 1 is Fig. 2 is. a fragmentary side elevational view ofithe invention,
Fig.- 3 is. a view takengon substantiallyline 33, of Fig. 1,showing'therotatable .member in section and the staff in frag? V mentary elevation.
As shown in the drawings,,the invention comprises a staff 7, liavinglone face, adjacent the beveled surface 8. Secured in'the staff '7 and projecting outwardly from'adjacent the upper end thereofis a shaft or'pinS). 1 upon which] is rotatably mounted a hub 10,
the upper end thereof, cut-away, to provide having propellerblades 12 and 13 projecting outwardly from opposite sides thereof. Suits able washers are inounted'on the pin 9 for spacingithe hub[1O fron'i' the stafff7 and fromthe head 11 on the in-9.1 It w ill be noted tli'atthe pin 9v issecured to the staff '7 at an-inclination to the longitudinal axisolf.
the, staff'i'p i The device is intended as a toy .to be eithercarried in the hand of a child'and operated while the child is running, or to be mounted upon a vehicle such as an auto1nobile,.or the like, so that, when the vehicle is being propelled, the air striking the propeller blades 12 and '13- Will, effect arotation of these blades ,about'the pin 9, as an axis.
a fragmentary front elevational V ew of theinvention,
Tt has been found, inoperation ofthe'de I vice described herein,.tha't' i'fthe pin 9 is ex tended at right'anglesto the longitudinal axis of the staff 7 ,JWhen the toy is carried through the air a high speed,the propeller blades will be forced inwardly, 'soas, n'their V rotation, toengage against'the. staff'7, thisf eof i I engagementretarding and often preventing" the rotation of the blades on-thepin '9. Consequently, it is evident that it is necessary to always assure a clearancebetween thepro peller blades and. the staif7, so that nointerference will behad with the rotation of the blades. To effect this, I have mounted the pin 9 at an inclination to the longitudinal. axis of the staff 7 and to compensate for this inclined mounting ofthepropeller blades 7 V I on the staff 7 I. have cutaway a portion as at 8,011 the staff 7. It,th erefore, is apparent that whenitlie staff 7 j is mounted in an upright -position,-the propeller blades Will be inclined to the vertical; If, however, it
is desired l'o have the propeller blades vertical, itwill be-necessa ry to incline the Staff 1 80 7 to the vertical. In either event,*there is always a clearance between the ends oft-he propeller blades and the stafi 7, sothatanefficient operation of the device is assured. lVhile I have illustrated and described the; preferred form of construction I do not wish.
to limit myself tothe preciseformjof strues turev shown but desire to avail .myselfjof such vari at1ons and modifications as I come; 7
fwith-in' thesscope of'the appended"claims; I Havingthusdescribed my invention, what I cla m as new and'desire tosecure by. Let;
