NICHOLASMARCALUSy OF PLAINEIELD,V NEW .TE1`--5Sil- ASSIGNOR TO.AUTOMATIC PAPER MACHINERY COMPANY, INC., .0F PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORA- TION 0F NEW JERSEY.
BOX FOR PAPER ROLLS.
Application led October 2, 1925. Serial .Nm-60,036.
. rFhis invention relates to boxes or dispensing packages for rolls'of paper, and 1n :particular to a box for retaining a roll of waxed paper provided with a Inet-al strip corners of the box so that the strip of paper.
bein withdrawn from the roll may be readily pulled over the metal strip as it is being nnwound from the roll and torn off of any length desired. l
A stiil further object of the invention' is to provide an opening -in one@ or more of the wallsof the box to facilitate withdraw- .ing the strip of paper from the roll.
' i-i'nther feature of importance is that the Hap of the box may be placed .outside of the metal tearing strip so' that the hands will not come into -contact with the serrated edge of the metal strip or, the iaps may be placed within the box to guide the .paper from the roll while it is being withdrawn.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the features of construction and operation set forth in the following specication and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
In the accompanying drawingf annexed hereto and forming a part of this specification, f have shown my invention embodied in a paper box lfor a waxed paper roll, but"- it will be understood that the invention can lbe otherwisey embodied and that the. draw- .ings are not to be construed .as dening'or limiting the scope of the invention, the "claims appended to., this specification being f relied upon -forthat purpose.l
ln the drawing: v
i. ts Fi ure lis a front ,elevation of the box showing the metal tearing strip position` Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View taken on line 2;-2 of Fig. 1. i f v f Fig. 3 is an end elevation ofthe bog with theapof the box outside-and when folded, to form the wallsy and cover 1 method of folding and shaping the box `forms no part of the present invention, fur- YAlso the free longitudinal edge of the strip .portions of the stri are stamped or punched with' 12.-'
1,630,495 PATENT OFFICE.
Fig. 4 is a plan of theboxbefore folding.
In the above drawing I have shown but one embodiment of the invention which is now deemed preferable, but it is to be understood that changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of theA invention.
Briefly, in its broadest aspect, my invention comprises the following principal parts: first, an outline of card board or other heavy o5 material preferably of paper and adapted, "t
flap ofa complete box; second, a metal strip fastened to the edge of one of the walls and having one of its longitudinal edges extend ing beyond theedge of the wall; and third, apertures cut in the wall adjacent the metal strip and inthe cover flap.
' Referring more in detail to the figures ofr the drawing, t-he box forming the present invention'isformed from a sheet 10 of paper or other material shown in Fig. 4. This may be of such shape that the complete. box including its cover and flap may be made from a single sheet by folding upon the dotted lines 11 shown in Fig. 4. As the therdescription is thought to be unneces-` sary.
Along the free edge 12 of the front wall 13 of the boxv is a metal' strip 14. 'Asshown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2 the strip 14 extends slightly beyond the edge 12 ofthe paper.
14 is serrated or scalloped to form an ornai mental or plnlred edge. To fasten the strip 14 in position on the wall 13 of the box,
from'the strip to 'crm short projections 15 a5 Whiehi are forced through the wall 13 and then crimped down on the opposite side i `Also to addstrengthto the, strip 14 and tp prevent. it frpm bending or buckling easily it .may begrobvedor corrugated longitudi- 1100 nally as shownl at 16.
Fig. 3 shbws an end view of the box with the cover'l' formingA one ofthe Walls ofthe box having its .flap "18 o`n the outside of the front wa1113. Ion-this` position the met-all 105 'stripv`l4 isentirely'covered andprotected, and thus-is not liable `to come into contact` hands whlle carrying 1t' In. .this l side of the 'wall o position the box may be shipped or carried. When it is desired to .withdrawI paper and detach it from the roll., the flap 18 of the cover 17 is placed within the wall 13, thus exposing `the metal strip 14 preparatory for 21 in the cover 17 preferably is circular an V extends partly into the cover flap 18.` Thus, when the flap 18 is in the position shown in Fig. 2, a person can grasp the end of the paper through the openings `20 and- 21 and withdraw as much paper as needed.
What I claim is:
1. A box comprising a single Ifolded pieceof material and a metal strip having a serrated edge attached with its serrated edge adjacent the free edge of one of the walls of the box, a cover flap for said box forming an integral part of the same piece of material as said box and ada ted to lit inside or outthe box carrying the metal strip, said metal strip being attached to said box longitudinally of and adjacent the free edge of said cover iap thereby forming a cutting edge for material Within the box, and said metal strip being adapted t0 be concealed or exposed by the position of said iap outsideor inside of said box.
2. A box comprising a single folded piece bf material and ametal strip having a serrated edge attached with its serrated edge adjacent the free edge of one of the walls of the box, prongs formed by and upstanding from said strip whereby they may -pass through and be crimped upon one of the walls of said box, a cover i'ap for said box forming an integral part of the same piece of material as said box and adapted to fit inside or outside of the Wall of the box carrying'the metal strip, said metal strip ,bein attached to said box longitudinally of an adjacent the free edge of said cover flap thereby forming a cutting edge for material within the box, and said metal strip being adapted to be concealed or exposed by the position of said flap outside or inside of'said 3.4 box comprising a single folded piece of material 'and a metalstrip havinga serrated edge attached with its serrated edge adjacent the free edge of one of the walls of the box, prongs formed by and upstanding from said strip whereby they may pass through and be crimped upon one of the Walls of said box, a cover flap for said .box forming an integral part of the same piece of material as said box and adapted to fit inside or outside of the wall of the box carrying the metal strip, said metal strip being longitudinally grooved whereby it is stiffened against'bending and attached to said box longitudinally of and adjacent the free edge of said cover iap thereby forming a cutting edge for material within the box, andv said metal strip being adapted to be concealed or exposed by the position of said Hap outside or inside vof said box.
In testimony whereof, I hereto laffix my signature.
NICHOLAS MARCALUS.
