Description
Patented Ma, 31,,1927.
UNITED A-res PATENT OFFICE.
. v I I. DOUGLAS 1!. IESLER, OF CI-IICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB TO THE BAS SICK.MANUI'AC- TUBING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
FILTER.
Application filed July 3,
' First.To provide a filter of the charac- I ter described, comprising means for collecting' and holding the dirt and water-usually found in commercial gasoline and, other fuels consumed by internal combustion engines;
Second-To provide a filter of the char-- acter described, comprising a receptacle having a transparent wall so that the accu'm ulation of impurities can be seen; TMWL-T0 provide a filter, such as described, so constructed as to permit easy andquick removal of the accumulated sediment, and replacementof the filter element; Fourth-To provide a filter of the character described which is constructed so that it can be easily and quickly inserted in the fuel line from and I FinaZZy;-To "provide. a filter which is simple in construction, and economical to manufacture.
Other objects willappear asthis description progresses-reference-being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a transverse section I line 1--1.of Figure'2, and s Figure 2 is a vertical section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1, the filter in thisfigure' being shown attached to the upper portion of a vacuum tank. 4 p
In both views of the drawings, similar reference characters will be used for referring to similar parts. 'In the preferred embodiment of my invention, I provide a cup-shaped receptacle 5, the upper end of which'is'open and protaken on vided with an outwardly extending flange 6, for a purpose which will later be referred to. A number of scallops 7, cut in the in-.
, ner side of the up rend, of. the receptacle,
form a plurality o projections 8 which extend inwardly from the'edgeof the open end of the receptacle, and provide supports for a filter element, comprising the disc 9 having a central opening 10 and the bowed wire su porting members 11, the inner ends of which the supply tank to the engine,
rial for sealing the extend'ithrough the disc 9 and are' 1922. Serial No. 572,211.
riveted thereto. A suitable filter bag 12,
which is preferably' made of chamois, is stretched over the supporting wires 11, and the edge of the open end thereof is confined between the edge ofthe disc and a U-shaped metal clamping strip 13, which entirely encloses the edge-0f the disc 9.
V The cap 14, for the receptacle 5 comprises a depending flange 15 and a central boss '16,- forming an annular chamber 17, which communicates with the receptacle 5 through the spaces or scallops between the niwardly extending projections 8, the flange 15 having'a plurality of'scallops 18 formed in its inner wall, which are adapted to be brought. into registry with the scallops 7 'formed in the receptacle.
To secure the cap 14 to the receptacle, I provide a threaded extension 19 on the flange 15, w1th which'the threaded ring 20,
having the inwardly extending flange 21, co-
acts. The flange 21 extends inwardly to a position beneath the-r outwardly extending flange 6, so that when the ring 20 is screwed onto the extension 19, the receptacle Is clamped to the cap. I prefer to make use or a gasket 22. of cork orrother suitable matejointbetween the cap and the receptacle.
A threaded bore 23, extending'inwardly' from the outer face of the cap 14, provides means for making a connection with an elbow 24, which is connected with one end of a .pipe 25. leading from the gasoline supply tank; The bore 23 communicates with the annular chamber 17 through a'plurality of smaller bores 26 formed in the central boss 16..
- The boss 16 is provided with a central p'rojection' 27 which extends through the opening 10 in the disc 9,'the joint between the discand the boss 16 being sealedby a through the bridge 31, extending from the boss 16 tothe flange 15 of the cap, and'outwardly through a bracket '32, which is formed integrally with the cap, and which to be brought into registry with the hollow boss 34: which forms the inlet to the vacuum ends in a ring or eye 33, which is adapted tank 35, a portion only of which is illustrated. The ring 33 is clampedto the boss 34 by means of the plug 35, the inner end of which is threaded into the boss 34, V This plug has-a central bore 36 and an annular groove 37 formed in the periphery thereof, which communicate through a'plurality of transverse bores 38. If ,des ired, a 'gasket 39 may be used for'sealing the joint bea. tween the plug' and the ring 33.
struction of the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be clearly understood that my invention isv not limited to these details, but is capable of other adaptations and modifications within the scope of the appended claims;- I Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: a
. 1. filter comprising-a receptaclelhavingi a plurality of projections extending in wardly from the edge of the.open'- end thereof, a filter element comp-rising a disc,
the ed e of which rests upon the inner 'ends of sai' projections, said disc having a central opening, a filter b'a'gdependingKrona said disc into said receptacle, and a capior said receptacle having a central boss and a flange forming an annular chamber communicatin with said receptacle through the spaces etween said projections, said boss having an inlet bore formed therethrough communicating with said-annular chamber and a projection extending through said central opening and having an outlet bore formed therein.
'2. A filter comprising a race tacle having a plurality of pro eetions'exten ing inwardly to from the edge'of theopen end thereof, a
filter element supported-by the inner ends 5 of said projections and projecting into said receptacle, and a cap for said receptacle havinga central ho'ss and a flange-forining an annular chamber communicating ,with
bore communicating with said annular chamber and an outlet bore communicating 'with'the interior of said filter clement.
While I have described the details of eon-' 3. A filter element comprising an imperforate disc having-a central opening, a plurality of bowed wires, the ends of which are secured tosaid disc adjacent the edge there- ,rectly' to the edge of said disc.
4. A filterelement comprising an imperforatedisc having a central opening, a plurality ofbowed supporting wines, the free ends of which are secured to said disc adjacent theedge-thereof, a filter bag stretched over said bowed wires, and means carried by said disc and forming a unitary struc ture witlrsaid disc, wires and bag for se curing the open end of said filter bag directly to the edge of said disc.
5. A filter comprising a receptacle having a plurality of projections extendinginwardly from theedze of the open end thereof, a
chambered filter element having a flange resting upon the inner ends of said projections, the space betweensaid projections providing inlet passages to said receptacle, and means communicating with the-interior of said filter element to provide an outlet therefrom.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 30th day of June, 1922.
DOUGLAS F. FESLER.
